@@AlexDainisPhD Hahahaha nice :) Continue the good work, that was amazing and interesting. I'm quite surprise you could also mention Laminar Flow and not get @SmarterEveryDay in the the chat ;) czcams.com/video/j2_dJY_mIys/video.html
It is pretty cool that I stumbled across this here. I work for the company that spent nearly 10 years of planning and modifying the 747 SP SOFIA "Clipper Lindbergh" aircraft in Waco Texas. Fun fact, the Super Guppy aircraft you show in your video is the same aircraft that flew in a section from another 747 SP used to assemble a mock up of the pressure bulkhead and telescope assembly. Thanks for the memories.
She hangs around down in Christchurch New Zealand a bit parked out front of the US Antarctic hangers An interesting sight. Even on the ground. Christchuch's airport is tiny so can see all from the public roads.
It was lots of fun! If you join the #NASASocial email list, they send out all of the opportunities. I would absolutely recommend applying if there's one near you!
Great Video! and it is amazing to see how scientists, engineers and pilots have got that thing working. Especially, knowing that disturbance due to motion of an aircraft through air mars the mounted telescope's ability to seek and track a very distant target. Unlike this telescope, ground and satellite telescopes do not encounter such perturbations making it easier for them to focus on a target.
Right?! Just the vibration from my hand on a little backyard telescope makes it almost impossible to see things clearly; the fact that they can get clear pictures from a moving plane is WILD.
why are we still using ancient constellations which dont even look like their namesake. Question: Can we not come up with a better system to name the stars in the 21st century, a system that is more intuitive than the 12 characters of dot to dot
hey alex, just wanted to let you know that tarmac is not a real term! a lot of people get this wrong (including me sometimes!), but i think what you're actually referring to here is the apron.
@@AlexDainisPhD thanks! more specifically the apron or ramp is the big, open area where ground crew might be present, and the 'roads' from there to the runway(s) are called 'taxiways'
DJI Osmo: “We make the most stable steadicam stabilizers ever seen”
SOFIA: “hold my beer”
This is the greatest comment and I am only mad I did not think of this joke myself.

Yes, that was definitely a cool science-y thing. Thank you.
Thank you for watching!!

No way!!!! This is really cool, and I had no idea that the two planes had an early connection. Thank you so much for sharing this!
There's so much badassery in that plane alone. This is dope!

We love you, Alex!
That's an amazing science event to participate in! I wish I could've joined!

I'd love to see more videos like this! It's crazy just how much nasa has in its arsenal
Wow!SOFIA the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, also word sofia from the ancient greek means Wisdom.
I did not know that! Very cool!
Really nicely put together video and so damn interesting. Keep 'em comin
Thank you! Will do!
Always loved how NASA picks names for their projects. SOFIA, SPICA and STEREO are one of my favorite acronyms.
They are always very satisfying names :)
Laminar flow! Someone tell Destin.
I love astronomy, hoping to get my first scope soon.
Yay! I don't have one (I live in a very bright city...) but I bought my dad one for Christmas and it was fun to play around with in the backyard!
Loved it
Thank you!!

this seems like an inconvenient way to look at your neighbours' new tv
this channel needs to be viewed more, if there is a chance, would you collab with "smarter everyday"?
Aw, thank you! And absolutely. Some day...

Oh wow, thank you! I did not know this and now I feel smarter having learned something! From now on I will call it the apron :)

In reference to an airfield, you are correct. "Tarmac" itself is a real term, being short for Tarmacadam.
@@greensteve9307 right :) it's just that airfields are usually paved with asphalt
you're so cute
so, do you want to work at the NASA after receiving your PhD?
Why are you talking about space and nasa? You are biologist, aren't you?
Video is great though.
