- These tracks are a collection of tunes from Donal Lunny's 1987 self titled album (Live at the National Concert Hall, Dublin) on the label Gael-Linn. Accompanying Donal here are Arty McGlynn, Sean Og Potts, Cormac Breathnach, Manus Lunny, Damien Quinn & Steve White.
Donal, as always, brings his trademark zouk sound and the rest of musicianship here is excellent so their renditions of some of these tunes are a pleasure to listen to... I hope it gives everyone as much listening pleasure as it gives me!
The tunes in the set are as follows:
1 - Across The Hill / An Fáinne Óir
2 - Coast River
3 - Denis Doody's / Tolka Polka
4 - Declan
5 - Leppadumdowledum
6 - Tommy Peoples / Maids Of Mullach / Major Harrisons Fedora
Played this record to death when it came it out. One of my all time favourite albums
Me too :)
@@MsShulio And me!
We bought this album in 1996 and played it in the car and basically loved it to death! It's so lovely and nostalgic listening to it again here! Thank you!
Legends.
I loved this music 30 years ago and now I am coming back to it. it is exactly the kind of music we need now. it is so natural and like much of Irish culture very connected to nature in a mystical way.
Like several others, I've owned--and relished--this for many years. Some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard in a longish life engaged with the performing arts. I own a large amount of music acquired over more than 40 years: Dennis Doody's/Tolka Polke and Declan are among the most beautiful enriching soulful pieces ever delivered to our body and soul. These are not minstrels; They are masters of their instruments and magicians. Donal Lunny is not merely a great musician, he befriends and assembles such fine and dynamic musicians and guides the creation, the birth of the exceptional, the beautiful.
Spot on. These wizards weave a magic web.
Love this so much. Was the only traditional album my dad played that I really loved. Never heard anything like it before or since.
You have no idea how happy I am to find this! I have the CD but sadly it was damaged and I can’t play it anymore.
Leppadumdowledum is my favourite track and one of my all time favourite ‘happy’ tunes that never fails to lift my spirits. To hear it again, on this first day of 2020, is the best new year gift I could have asked for! 🙂
Email me themoebius@yahoo.co.uk and I will post you a copy of my CD
I was leaving for Tenerife with my parents, Liam was playing the bodhrán to one of the tracks, 11 am. Tenerife or this? This!!
Absolutely love this 🎙️❤️🔥🎙️ thank you so much for sharing 🎇❤️🔥
The shift at 16.55 literally is enough to make you weep! Absolute beauty to the ears.
It does
Think you're the only one who loves this album? Jeff Beck loved Declan so much he started leading off his sets with it!
The concert was not only recorded, it was taped. It was at the 1987 O Riada Retrospective. To see the actual performance of these very songs: czcams.com/video/bDjDhWIJ1ZQ/video.html
It certainly does, May! I'm just encountering this online, though I know the music well. I saw Donal Lunny and Planxty with Christy Moore, a great friend, perform in Dublin at the Chariot Inn about every weekend, when I was living in Dublin in the early 1970's. Magnificent stuff, bringing back so many memories! Thank you, May-- You're a true Paddy! But, what is so great about Donal, he just loves the music and plays the music for what it is, and gives out his joy of the music to everyone. That's a special gift, a spiritual gift, that is Donal Lunny. His smile alone makes you happy. God bless!
Absolutely great stuff. Thanks for sharing this with us; Jesus Christ Bless! :)
Some of my very favorite musicians here, what a nice thing to have on youtube!
Bless you for posting this! Such a formative album to me in so many ways. THANK YOU!
Day MeeYen Thanks for sharing this great milestone of irish music. Love this since I bought it 1988 on vinyl. Few years later on CD. But the playlist here is the original from the vinyl. On CD they changed tunes 2. and 3. - but not on playlist at the backside of the case. So first comes polka-set and then "Coast River". Many greets
It's Lunny's self-titled album from 1987, on the Gael Linn label. Band includes Arty McGlynn and Manus Lunny. This is one of my all-time favorite albums. Thanks for sharing it here!
"This is one of my all-time favorite albums" Couldn't agree more!
Great talent
i used declan for preshow during my time with red kettle theatre compamy during the run of the kings of the kilburn highroad here in ireland and in the u.k. and the american tours. it got the same reviews as the show. top class
Hi Joe, My parents played in The Black Lion in Kilburn High Road for 40 years. Going to see the Play when my late friend Joe Kelly played one of the characters was one of the stranger experiences of my life. Very moving take on life in London for Irish people in the 50's 60's etc. M
Powerful stuff!!!
What a concert. H-iontach maith

My pleasure... Thanks for the correct info.
great stuff!
Where can I get a cd of this album. I’ve loved it for over 30 years now; I first was given it on tape
BTW, If anyone is looking this on CD or LP, check out Discogs. Loads of copies on there for cheap. It goes for silly money on eBay though.
love this record-
impossible to find!
I have a tape here -- you can still find a CD online.

en mi pais no se escucha este tipo de musica, pero tuve la oportunidad de ver la pelicula This is my father, y la cancion Declan es preciosa, me encanta esto que han subido, es alegre al inicio
Yes, great to hear this here, but the track listings are incorrect. Track 2 is Dennis Doody's, and track 3 is Coast river....Cheers
Are you sure? The track listing on the CD I have says track 2 is Coast River.
Holy shit. You're right. My whole life has been a lie.
I'll be home to Dublin in the coming months. If I can pick it up I most definitely will and will pass on the info. Suggest Claddagh Records in the interim.

I have the tape, too! Seems to have come from Wide Celts in Camden Lock, from the early 90s. I just found the CD by Googling it. Best of luck!
