Fellow Aussie here I Just got myself a 2012 DRZ400E with just under 6k on the clock for $5k has all the bells and whistles, including all B&B bash plate barkbusters case savers all round the side stand and clutch mod has already been done I just added a charging phone mount with a on off switch so it don't drain battery while not in use the only things it don't have yet is after market exhaust and jd jet kit this video has inspired me great work thanks for the tips mate have to get out and do this soon
Excellent job mate. From a drz400 owner new to camping, and wanting to figure out what's what, you've pretty much done it for me. My only problem is, I don't want the panniers, so will have to stack my gear a bit taller on the b&b racks. 😎👍
Good luck with it all mate. I can confirm that I found the bike handled way worse with the gear on it, no matter what I did - had suspension beefed up, bigger tank, steering stabilizer, 15t front sprocket, etc, etc. Maybe it was my shithouse ability or something different with my bike, as others seem to manage fine. Anyhow, I have a KTM 500 now, and love riding in the sand - hated it on the DRZ! Hopefully it works out for you and thanks for watching and passing on your thoughts.
I am a fan of the Mosko Moto Reckless 80 ( or 60) soft pannier system that ties onto the bike. it isn't cheap, so not for tight arses. The side bags are held in a holster and the top bag is held by a beaver tail wrap over to hold your duffle bag in place ( sideways) . I don't take a pillow, but shove my Aldi puffer jacket into my spare Tee shirt to make a pillow. For summer camping I take a plastic tarp the same size as my mattress, a light weight tarp for dew protections and sleep in a bivi bag ( plus a sleeping bag if cold). For winter I use a tarp tent ( Aluxe pyramid) with a single central pole. Super quick to erect when caught in a storm.

Probably not a bad idea if you live in an area with dangerous animals. Here in Australia, it's snakes & spiders - not sure the bear fence will help with these.
Great run down and set up, well done. Only point I noticed was blowing the mattress and guessing the pillow up by mouth (and the blow bag). Bad move, your blowing moisture into both, that will grow mould. Eventually, every time you deflate them, your shooting toxin spawns out. A small usb charged blower costs about $30 and is the same size as 1 of your lights.
Great vid there mate. It's amazing how much gear you can eventually load onto a bike if carefully chosen. The biggest challenge is managing all the heavy "fluids" (petty, water, grog) you might need to carry with you, depending on where you go, as that is where all the weight is. I still haven't figured out how to make a slab lighter. 🤔 You have picked the tent that I want to get, seems a good choice from all the others I have looked at buying. Tried a stool when camping once, just not comfortable/relaxing enough when sitting on it for any length of time. I have a OZtrail Compaclite Discovery Chair ($40 - 2.4kg) which is the most comfortable chair I've ever gone camping with. Much cheaper than the Helinox gear. Thanks mate. 👍
Thanks mate, yeah you're spot on about the liquids.... I don't usually do massive trips so the 17L Safari tanks takes care of the fuel, 2 x water bladders for water & 1 x 1.25 soft drink with spirits for grog.... works for over nighters.... I've upgraded to one of the hiking chairs since that vid, definite improvement 👍✊
that zipper moment tho xD This is one of my favorite parts, the pack up, it just amazes me how tight I can pack so much in my motorcycle and when you lay it out the groud like that, it seems to be impossible to carry all that, and that's where we get creative. Never surrender comfort :D Recently, I purchased a 60L hiking bag and the strap that comes with it became the perfect straps to put it on my sissy bar. I just add bungee cord for peace of mind. That thing holds my tent, sleeping bag, inflatable pillow, cooking materials tarp, ropes, ground sheet, insulator, and so much more! Then I have a 50L saddle bag - that's just an overkill at this point - that carries all my personal effects like clothing, food, make-up (I mean, really? Yes really. Never forget make up lol), tools, oil, and spare parts. Oh and I have a pillion when we go camping - her stuff goes to the saddle bag.. and this is us "packing light" hahaha My bestfriend and I just love to go out riding and camping. :D
Nice set up mate, setting up my drz at the moment to make it adventure ready. I have the same jacket and the idea of the double zip is so you can zip up from the bottom , handy when you need a leak or do up ya pants. Subbed.

Cheers mate, yeah it's a pretty long bag. The DRZ feels the weight up high a bit, makes it harder to handle - might look into suspension upgrade. Vstrom took more gear, mostly in panniers and very little in a bag and didn't notice any handling issues - actually felt like it stabilised the bike at speed. You'll love it!

Thanks, it's all fairly straight forward gear, but I guess we all want as compact and light as possible, with the right balance of comfort/practicality. I bought a proper hiking chair now - good purchase. And have a stretcher on the road bike (bigger panniers).
Great tips and production, thank you! I mount a similar 3 litre Ossa dry bag on my rear Tusk rack, but mine is sideways to let me slide back on the seat while riding. (needed to put a flat lifter board to keep it away from hot pipe) I'm going to get the smaller panniers and try your set up. Cheers!
Thanks for the comment, Jack. I did try my dry bag sideways originally, but found my bike handled better along the seat (mind you I probably should re-try it sideways with the rear shock a few clicks harder to see if that helps). Good luck with the panniers hunt mate!
Good tips. If you had the long roll bag on the Fraser trip I can see you can't get your butt far back enough for the sand, why the front tyre digs in 👍

But I'm still happy with what I got - bought it all last year so it's last year's pain now! Lucky I didn't add it up then! That did include the panniers as well - $220. Haven't done heaps of trips in it, let alone much rain, but we did get a shower on that trip and I was dry inside. As with most hiking tents, if it was bucketing for hours and pretty flat land (no drainage), might get a bit wet inside but not as bad as outside! haha the bases are adequate but it is a hiking tent. No I haven't had any issues. I bought a smaller usb to c adapter (about 8 inches long), and it's been good so far - have done some pretty corrugated tracks, etc. In saying that, I've probably only used it on 4-5 rides in these conditions. So mine may not have loosened up yet.
Hey, the bike's been great. Only issue was one of the breather hoses got blocked in a puddle and cut it out. They're now moved to the air box. I had it rejetted when I got the Yoshi exhaust. I don't really like it over 85km/h, I think it's part me (as over 95 on the road bike I get nervous too), and part MX front tyre. Now that I'm gonna use it more for adventure style, I'll probably go 44t on the rear sprocket which might help. I'll probably get the suspension suited to carry luggage better too. They're a great all rounder type bike - I'll probably always keep it, and add bikes better suited to specific riding. Good luck on your purchase. Hey mate, I have been looking at grabbing that big duffel bag from aldi for a 7 day trip on my lil dual sport. Any tips on mounting fuel to the bike with a bag that big? Can't really afford a larger tank, trying to do this as cheap as possible.

Great video. Just starting my ADV Journey here in Kiwiland. Im in me 50s. about to get my Ls. I was looking at Dr650 as it was better suited to taking on th open road to get to the trails. But see quite a few Ozzies on the DRZ400.. So how do you gear yours and is it an issue for you. Im not needing speed but NZ roads often hilly and twisty. I lke the DRZ being lighter and more manageable on trails. Why did you settle on DRZ. Im about 185cm and 90kg. Great👍
Hey mate, I originally bought it as it's an easy to ride, reliable trail bike. Only intention was to ride single trail at the time and follow my son around on his 50/110cc.... after a few months I started being interested in camping trips and slowly built it for that too.... I find it quite vibraty and skittish over 85km/h (might be due to mx tyre!?) and it may need some suspension work for when loaded up as handling is worse then.... I got a Vstrom 650 for road touring/camping and have now ordered a Beta Xtrainer for single track, as now the DRZ is a bit awkward in the tight stuff.... I'm not a good rider, will likely always sit in the beginner/novice level but enjoy hopping on for an adventure....the DR650 are fantastic from everyone I've spoken to.
Great video! Just one thing that bothers Me - your ride - It is your way home - Why would you leave it out in the rain and the elements? I always have a cover for my bike.
@@AdvHQ No problem. We went camping last spring and woke up to freezing rain. Had to ride on the shoulder for over 30 miles. That was a real eye opener. Everyone ok but front tire kept washing out on us. I guess we were a bit early to get out there.
Haha tools are in the side panniers(they have pouches underneath) - I did talk about them briefly but didn't spread them out.... tube, levers, DRZ tool kit, zip ties, etc

Sounds like a good setup. The Mosko set looks good, if I used it more often, I'd look into it.

You might consider a portable electric bear fence when predators abound. A compact 2.4 lbs for huge peace of mind.

Thanks for the tip mate. Yeah mattress has been by blowing. Pillow is self inflating foam. Will look into the usb blower 👍

They are pretty good, and yeah, being a trail bike, sit a bit high. Maybe look into a lowering kit and see if that's do-able.

Have you had any dramas with the charging system on the quadlock USB port ? I’ve found mine to disconnect sometimes from the connection being loose
No I haven't had any issues. I bought a smaller usb to c adapter (about 8 inches long), and it's been good so far - have done some pretty corrugated tracks, etc. In saying that, I've probably only used it on 4-5 rides in these conditions. So mine may not have loosened up yet.

Hey, the bike's been great. Only issue was one of the breather hoses got blocked in a puddle and cut it out. They're now moved to the air box. I had it rejetted when I got the Yoshi exhaust. I don't really like it over 85km/h, I think it's part me (as over 95 on the road bike I get nervous too), and part MX front tyre. Now that I'm gonna use it more for adventure style, I'll probably go 44t on the rear sprocket which might help. I'll probably get the suspension suited to carry luggage better too. They're a great all rounder type bike - I'll probably always keep it, and add bikes better suited to specific riding. Good luck on your purchase. Hey mate, I have been looking at grabbing that big duffel bag from aldi for a 7 day trip on my lil dual sport. Any tips on mounting fuel to the bike with a bag that big? Can't really afford a larger tank, trying to do this as cheap as possible.
You could strap a 5L jerry on - quite a few do but I didn't like the idea of that weight on the sub-frame.

Great video. Just starting my ADV Journey here in Kiwiland. Im in me 50s. about to get my Ls. I was looking at Dr650 as it was better suited to taking on th open road to get to the trails. But see quite a few Ozzies on the DRZ400.. So how do you gear yours and is it an issue for you. Im not needing speed but NZ roads often hilly and twisty. I lke the DRZ being lighter and more manageable on trails. Why did you settle on DRZ. Im about 185cm and 90kg. Great👍
Hey mate, I originally bought it as it's an easy to ride, reliable trail bike. Only intention was to ride single trail at the time and follow my son around on his 50/110cc.... after a few months I started being interested in camping trips and slowly built it for that too.... I find it quite vibraty and skittish over 85km/h (might be due to mx tyre!?) and it may need some suspension work for when loaded up as handling is worse then.... I got a Vstrom 650 for road touring/camping and have now ordered a Beta Xtrainer for single track, as now the DRZ is a bit awkward in the tight stuff.... I'm not a good rider, will likely always sit in the beginner/novice level but enjoy hopping on for an adventure....the DR650 are fantastic from everyone I've spoken to.
Mine is geared 15t front, std 47 rear. 181cm about 80kg without gear.
Great video! Just one thing that bothers Me - your ride - It is your way home - Why would you leave it out in the rain and the elements? I always have a cover for my bike.
Cheers mate, I only do occasional camping trips, not full-time (I wish!), so I don't think a night or 2 every now & again will do much damage.
@@AdvHQ No problem. We went camping last spring and woke up to freezing rain. Had to ride on the shoulder for over 30 miles. That was a real eye opener. Everyone ok but front tire kept washing out on us. I guess we were a bit early to get out there.

Haha tools are in the side panniers(they have pouches underneath) - I did talk about them briefly but didn't spread them out.... tube, levers, DRZ tool kit, zip ties, etc
