Considering one of these myself, but I’m not sure if I can sneak it into the house under my mrs watchful gaze.
It's probably the most under-rated VA out there. I agree with all you say 100% mate.
The Alesis Microns cool little cousin.
Agreed, its got nearly all the sounds you need for early 80s electronic music, they seem to sit in a mix really well with a nice punch which is quite difficult to achieve with a lot of modern softsynths, the drums are great and the preset patterns are pretty inspiring plus its very well built. Got mine very cheap in mint condition and wont be selling it.
Mine was in mint condition too when I purchased it a little over a year ago. Only paid $160 dollars U.S. with free shipping. I was shocked when the seller on eBay accepted my offer. They said they were just happy it would be going to a good home.
0:00 - 0:01 one day I will sample this melodic greeting “heeeey”.
Thank you for your brilliant review!
i like this synth, old but gold :-)
I bought this synth brand new and it still amazes me! I had to crack open the power inverter on the power cord and replace a bad resistor, but it still operates like a champ
At 8:10 you can hear one of the most melodic synth vocal sound. Sounds amazingly well!
Great review and a great synth. I had one a few years ago and regret selling it. It's so inspiring and easy to jam out new ideas, whoever programmed the patches & sequences did a great job. Definitely one of the best synths Akai ever produced and they should re-visit it and release an updated version.
YES!
All Akai gear is fun to play! 😆👍🏽
amazing
Turn the control wheel lights back on, funky orange. It's a beefed up micron/ion using the same sound engine. The Alesis editors "3rd. Party paid for" work with it. Single voices are compatible across the range. I can create sounds using the knobs/switches of the Alesis Ion, dump them, then load them into Miniak.
Hi doug great vid as usual
I know this has a sequencer so are you just triggering sequences etc from the keys
@ 7:30 INSTANT AUTECHRE!! 😳😳😜😜😜❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I used to have one. Thanks for reminding me how great the synth is. Found one online yesterday at a reasonable price and ordered it.
Got one! It’s the one I’ll never sell, even though I sold my AN1x. Amazing to layer with other keyboards. Had the display been better it would sell for twice the price.
I only own 2 synths. An Alesis Micron and a Yamaha CS1x. Neither of them are going anywhere. Currently, I'm trying to locate a used Novation XioSynth 25 at a reasonable price.
I own one and use it with my Yamaha CS6X and Ensoniq ASR-10 and sometimes hook up my AKAI S950 for that extra punchy sound. A real killer sound!
I have 2 microns. I'm thinking about getting one of these because my microns are starting to act up... the pitch wheel's very glitchy when I'm not even touching the wheel it acts like I am bumping it... maybe a short somewhere.. but I just power off and it goes away... but it is really annoying.
Have you had any problems with these? I see alot of microns for sale but not many of these, which makes me think the akai is probably a better option. What do you think?
I love the phrase recorder , are these two basically the same operationally?
I bought this keyboard back in 2011 but sold it today. But I plan to replace it with a Korg Wavestate. It will fit in nicely with my MS-20, which I bought new in 1980. So much has changed.
I just dug out my miniak after years of not touching it, because of this vid, & it's sat on the table here next to a wavestate!
Me encantó este video, realmente lo veo más cómodo que su hermano el Micron.
genio
I know im a bit late to the game here BUT can you mute/ copy n borrow pattern sections to put into your own multi sequence patches?
Do these drum patterns and sequences fire off over midi ie using an external sequencer like a qy700 to trigger them?
Thanks
Jb xx
You can use your sequences in any multi you like. And yes, each multi channel transmits midi, up to 16, but I think it works sequentially. It truly is a great synth.
It's just like the alesis micro I had both
Got mine for £40 (broken, eBay), AKAI replaced the main PCB and gave me a free PSU. No mic but I put an SM58 in its place.
Great deal you got there👍
@@TheSoundTestRoom Totally. Miniak is very rare in Japan, apparently. The 3rd mod wheel is very useful, not something you see even on expensive synths
Ok so I’m not a musician at all but I am looking into this synth and have a question. Is there a way to fade in / fade out of these presets, or keep multiple ones / recordings going at the same time on different channels, what kind of external device would I need to do that? I have a looper, would I be able to use that with this synth? I’d just like to be able to layer sounds / different presets somehow. Ty
So a multi is up to 8 parts which you can assign to different midi channels. Each channel can respond to midi volume, pan etc. There is (was) a Yahoo group ion micron miniak. I am sure I made some posts there that explain how to do some of what you want.
When you say about menu diving to set volumes. Does the midi implementation allow for an external midi controller to adjust various parameters?
And any free/ cheap editors for it?
Ctrlr editor is good. I also created one - Miniaktools you can find it and other apps on sourceforge.
how does his trigger via a daw. the patterns and arps etc ? cheers
It's midi. Say you set bass drum on channel 4 of a multi at note C0. Then if you play a C0 into Miniak on Ch4 ...
I removed the muting transistors on mine, as they become problematic on all units - deadening or killing the sound completely.
Could this be the reason my R Channel output occasionally sounds staticky and muted?
👍👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿
I just bought one for 150 bucks.
Dont forget. The Miniak is a "Clone" of the Alesis Micron/ION ;). Akai bought Alesis and bring out the Miniak ;)
Does the arpeggiator transmit midi out?
Yes.
@@ReneeNme Thanks!
This video is ONLY Akai Miniak? No external effects/synths/etc?
Costas Siachamis Yes, this is just the Miniak on its own with nothing else added
Us aliens loose things too.
Anybody know a working editor for miniak?
I don't think there is one anymore, I'm not even sure there ever was, but i may be wrong.
It's a pity. I got one and it's awesome. The only disappointing things are the keybed, difficult editing and lack of USB port
I had one it got destroyed in hurricane sandy I'm pissed off to this day
How come I never heard of it? And what is it - an arpeggiator rompler? Akai’s legacy website says too many redirections. The device sounds great but those few knobs suggest little means of manipulation.
Biochill It’s not a Rompler, it’s a VA Synth, fully programmable
Must have gotten used to synths having so many knobs. I’m just surprised what comes out of this one, it looks more like a controller.
It's a repackaged Alexis Ion/Micron using the same sound engine... But with a few extra bells and whistles. There is a paid for s/w editor for it and the micron/ion, available on the internet. Single voices are interchangeable between minimal/micron & ion.
@Capt. There are also hardware parameter controllers out there such as the Stereoping release which are compatible with the Micron which eliminates ( somewhat ) the menu diving required that so many people like to complain about in reference to the Micron. Granted, the Stereoping controller is rather pricey.
Capt. Scarlet should I purchase a alesis micron or a akai mini ak?
Same synth engine as Alesis Micron.
Same engine, better faceplate layout. And ??
...and microphone
Weird. I would have assumed that was just a midi controller
Nope, it's a full on balls to the wall self contained virtual analog synth designed after it's older brother the Alesis~Micron. The nice thing about the Micron ( I own one ), is that the chassis is made of metal with thick heavy duty fiber reinforced plastic end pieces whereas the entire chassis for the Miniak is made of all plastic.
Cheap VST in box.
the thing is the so-called analog synths like the behringers are also just bst in a box, and even more expesnive :/ i would go for this one, it seems more versatile, but it lacks knobs
@@johnnyguitar7921 the nasty thing about Miniak is how they implemented -ve NRPNs. But you can use CC to.control some parameters. I built an Arduino based box to convert BCR2000 to work better with it. But I also made some templates for normal BCR2000 to work plus made some editors. That being said the keyboard shortcuts are cool. Plus you can map the 3 X y z knobs.
Sounds kinda digital when the filter is 100% open, but the general sound is pretty pleasant... put it in a mix and will anybody notice? :P
So?
IT'S A RIP-OFF of an Alesis Micron! Same patches and everything. My god!
kipptumor Hey- I’m not sure who owns who now but Alesis and Akai were the same company at the time of the release of these keyboards. I owned both. Still own and love the Miniak. Wish I’d have kept the Micron.
FAR !!! from being a " RIP-OFF". Alesis and AKAI were, and still are, directly connected through corporate affiliations when we speak about the Micron or Miniak in particular. Yes, while the Miniak is essentially running the same synth engine as the Micron, it's the control layout of the faceplate of the Miniak that differentiates itself from the Micron. I own both machines, btw, and if there is one machine that I particularly lean towards when wanting to jam ?? It would be the Miniak.
So, there we go. It's not a rip-off.
@@ReneeNme there is a lot of talk about how the micron patches are better than the Miniak or the D to A is better ... The hardware is pretty similar and I added a comparison on the web - the major difference is the mapping of the xyz knobs. I have two Miniaks and a broken Ion. If I could get a cheap Micron I think I have a chance to hack the OS update to get later OS for it. Alas this BS about the Micron makes them hard to get. Shame cos I think I could make the Micron more versatile especially the additional sysex in new OS.
@@stephenhookings1985 There are 2 used Microns located in the U.S. that are for sale on eBay for less than $300. Both sellers are accepting Best Offer's.
I'll give you 350 dollars for it ?
I don't know how to play one,
but l could have fun learning.
It would be perfect for me, as l
am disabled and could easily
have it on my lap - which is the
only way l could play it. It looks
FUN !
