How to Build a Template & Burn Holes Into Landscape Fabric

  • I have followed many of the market and urban gardeners for quite a long time and have seen them use landscape fabric as an effective way to prevent weeds. There are a few other videos on getting the holes into the landscape fabric, but on this video I wanted to go over the whole process of building a template and then burning the holes. I will be doing a lot of updates this summer on how the crops grow in the landscape fabric.
    Head over to my website for the complete blog post and much more!

      What are the specs for the landscape fabric? Is it something you can buy at Home Depot?

      Hey Susanna, here is the brand I use www.amazon.com/DeWitt-SBLT4300-Sunbelt-Barrier-300-Feet/dp/B004SI9RY0/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=landscape+fabric+dewitt&qid=1557059074&s=hi&sr=8-1

    Thank you so much for showing the part where you used the burner to slice the fabric with a 4 foot jig - that was the part that I was missing and I was getting horrible fraying! You saved the day.

    great advice on emphasizing the importance of searing those ends! It tremendously improves the lifespan of this material. It might seem like a lot of work upfront, and although its not totally passive (I urge everyone to monitor those weeds in the holes) the time savings in weed management is still night and day. My plants really respond well to the improved water retention in our soils during the summer, and warmer temps in the spring- we did some trials this year that blew me away.
    mostly I just wanna say how much I love the fact that you thought to flame an extra row of spacer holes, but didn't think to do this project somewhere other than the nice turf, haha- I can relate

    Great idea!! I use the landscape weed guard fabric, both the 3 ft wide and the six foot wide. The template is a great idea but since I have planted a variety of plants and seed I will need multiple templates with different spacing. I also keep 3 feet between my rows because it makes it easier to harvest. This fabric is the only thing I have found that enables me to plant where Bermuda grass is a problem.

    From experience it seems to work better in that you get cleaner holes if you burn on a solid surface such as concrete......

    Your plywood would scorch less if it was soaking wet. Both sides to avoid curling. I think I have a weed burner. Like your crosscut jig. I’ve always knifed the mat and folded the end under termination staples. We use it mostly over the sand floor in our greenhouse

    What do you have attached to the torch. It doesnt look like a big propane tank. Is it a camper propane? Is so did you have to get an adapter?

      You probably had too much of a gap beneath the board/fabric, so the heat could spread further than you intended

    Pro tip: Your burned edges are very frayed (see 4:20). You can avoid that by putting another solid board without holds under the fabric, so it is being clamped by the two boards, that gives the plastic nowhere to go and will burn a perfect clean circle without frays.

      Hi.
      It is very hard to find 30m of hard surface that is perfectly leveled.
      This winter I'll do the burnin of 1km landscape fabric. In a 3 row design like on the board but spacing it 30cm center to center. 12cm hole diameter. Also going to try 5cm diameter with 10cm spacing in row. 30cm between.

    • @jeffmeyers3837
      @jeffmeyers3837 Před 10 měsíci

      @@leopoldprlic2148 Why would you need 30m of perfectly level surface? LOL. Just grab a piece of plywood to put under the area being burned, to prevent frayed edges, and give you a clean edge.

    • @leopoldprlic2148
      @leopoldprlic2148 Před 10 měsíci

      @@jeffmeyers3837 It would took too much time to do that. Lower surface has to be somewhat flat and leveled.
