Bellringing at Hamilton Cathedral, New Zealand

  • Where to start! They are all Mears bells, the tenor from 1932 was hung for full circle by itself before 7 sisters arrived in 1948 and 1950. They are spot on for tuning, and sound phenomenally perfect outside, really resonant and loud. However, on the inside there is notable clonking on the staircase, which luckily reduces in the ringing room but it is still noticeable. They go reasonably well due to the strong reinforced concrete tower, but the fittings need TLC, and they are VERY odd struck which sadly makes them difficult to strike properly. This is due to be fixed at some point soon, as that alone would make them so much easier to ring. With some ropes being really short, standing them can sometimes be difficult, even the tall ones were having trouble with the 6.
    This is a tower I would definitely come back to. It is currently one of only 6 ringable towers in New Zealand.

    Dove's guide states they are in E however they sound nowhere near E, much more like F. Someone might like to put nominals in on dove....
