There is a paper gasket between the air box and the carburator. I looked over several videos and everybody, it seems, overlooks this gasket. To make sure mine stays affixed to the airbox into put some rtv on the side that goes against the airbox. Air filtration is one of the weaknesses of this model saw, so I make sure any gasket on the carburator is installed. I wish to thank HL Supply for including this gasket in the set of parts I got from them off of ebay.
Thanks! My nearly new MS170 wouldn’t start this spring and the shop asked $155 to install a new carb. I’ll not spend 75% of the new value on a repair! You gave me the confidence to fix it myself.

Yes thanks but like how do you put it back together? Like jeah its relative simple but these wires is hard to put back . Like what is corret way. I have never done it and cant get back that clever wire what chooce "give more gas or not...

Hi, been watching your Vid's for a few year's now, and they have inspired me to do some repair's myself, but As a result I created a problem (ME) I toke Carb out and Cleaned it replaced Fuel line + filter Black hose and vacuum hose with Tylon yellow hose and new boot to cylinder, all good assembled, ( Light Bulb Moment) Having Two different hoses Less Likely to stuff up placement, WRONG, For some reason I had a brain Fart and put the Black Fuel Line to the Vacuum nipple on carb and the yellow cylinder to hose to the fuel inlet nipple on Carb, I was so happy with my achievement, I put the Plastic together and fueled it up and it started up straight away it needed a bit of fine tuning, but the 395xp was alive This was May 2022, One year later I got saw out of shed to for Firewood season and see ran fine till in the cut and it sounded lean and stalled out repeatedly, lucky I have more than one saw. Yesterday I disassembled again and found the orientation of the hoses to be incorrect and changed but the yellow hose had come of the cylinder port and had melted closed possible small combustion happened there as plastic melt on partition above where hose goes through to Carb. Sorry about the long windedness, but It Now wont Run at all unless with carb sprays help. ANY Help to steer me in right direction? Regards Fred.

I stripped down and cleaned my carb today and afterwards the saw ran like a top. Thanks for the video, Don. By the way, I solved my previous issue simply by watching the video and carefully remounting the choke shaft with the grounding strap/spring on top of the shaft. That way it grounds out the ignition when the choke lever is moved to the shut down position.

Hi Don, Can you believe it's been just 3 years since I had problems with my hardly used 170. And today I was cutting, it just idled down and stalled. Now won't start. I've used nothing but canned gas after last time. Weird though, won't start putting fuel right into carb either. Spark s good. Was running great then just slowly died and wont start now. So much for Stihl being so wonderful. Thanks Don. Carb time again.

I'm still new to small engine repair, but your videos, (especially in comparison to others) are clear (both in lack of shakiness and wind sound), descriptive and just oh so much more helpful to me. Keep it up! So far you've helped me with a Tecumseh snow blower (carb rebuild), Honda rototiller (camshaft replacement, carb rebuild, new belt), and now a Stihl chainsaw (another carb rebuild, but also found leak in fuel line thanx to this series of videos!)!

Nice video. I would recommend that you clean the exterior area of the carb before any
disassembly/removal of the carb itself. I always spray the complete area thoroughly with cans of brake parts cleaner then use compressed air to complete the cleaning process. This way you are working in a clean environment and much less likely to introduce dirt/debris into the intake port once carb is unbolted.

A great example of why you should never store your small motors with fuel in them or always add fuel stabilizer to them if you absolutely must. I don't know how many lawn mowers and weed wackers I've picked up from the trash that worked perfectly after a simple cleaning of the fuel systems. People would save themselves a lot of troubles just by running them dry before a long storage. Another great vid Dony.

Great video! My MS170 developed a fault where the lever assembly had fallen out of its housing. I was struggling to find out where to re-attach the throttle linkage and this vid pinpointed exactly what I needed to do - many thanks!
Fixed the saw, it was just the fuel line...put in a new one with the help of your video. Two cranks and it started right up. I thought I was going to have to replace the carb..thanks.
Everybody should run high test gas in their engines...makes them run better and last longer.

donyboy..you are so right ..the fuel screen on the carb should always be removed and cleaned....sometimes they look clean but are clogged up and no fuel will flow or it flows very slowly and produces intermittent running

Thanks for posting this video. I have an issue with my MS170 where it wont run at wide open throttle, and it seems I have a restriction in my fuel delivery system. I inherited it from my father, and when I got it it didnt run, so I drained it, cleaned the tank out as best I could and I was able to get it running. Its been great since then, of course the saw ran last time I used it, but I went to use it last night and it would bog out at WOT. If I sprayed ether into it, it would run at WOT, which is telling me its a fuel delivery issue. Logic says the first step would be to check the fuel filter/line. I was a bit worried about going into the carb just due to how small it is, but you really showed how simple and easy it is and Im not worried about rebuilding/replacing the carb if I had to. So again, thank you much.

Great learning video. My Stihl ms180 would not start. Too lazy to trouble shoot so I Spent $43 on a new carb , fuel line, ignition module, spark plug and T27 driver. Started on second pull . Idles and runs like a champ. Will rebuild carb for next time. Non ethanol only!

Hey Don, Ironic, just took my 170 carb apart. Can tell I used some dirty gas,,, screen was 2/3s covered with dirt. The company really wants u to buy a new carb,,, dealer says they,, don't sell rebuild kits. Internet here i come. Thanks for the video.

I found what's wrong with the chainsaw, as much as it sounds crazy at least for me, it was the spark plug. I change it with beater one NGK and it's working like a charm. Maybe when I crank it produce good spark, but when actually running something happens to it and doesn't work. By the way thank for the help and keep up good work. :)

Great vid... no one else showed changing the filter line inside the tank... for some reason, mine was fuel starved, so when I checked the filter, the line inside the tank was a shriveled up gooey mess, virtually unrecognizable; like an Earthworm that's been sitting in the Sun for a few days... I have no idea what happened... it was put up drained of fuel 5 yrs ago.

Thank you so much for this clear and helpful video! With your help, I just put a new (Chinese knockoff, no doubt, $23 on Amazon) carb in my 180C that has been giving me no end of trouble, I assume, because of the ethanol in the gas. It started right up and ran great! From now on I'll use super premium gas and put in anti-ethanol additive.
@mikocoon I've used one at work. They are excellent tools, but extremely expensive for a home setup, most I see are around $1000. That's a LOT of cans of carb clean.

check for spark when it dies. sometimes the coil will produce spark when spark cold but not when warm, if it's new then return it

Dude, you rock! I diagnosed my chainsaw issues as a worn/collapsing fuel line as you show in your video. It would idle, but as soon as I started to cut it would die from fuel starvation.
I got a new line and filter for $12 and with your excellent video was able to replace both and restore my MS170 to perfect health in about 30 minutes. Where do I send my check?

I guess I'll have to remove the recoil starter to get at the wiring to the ignition. I understand switching the saw to the off position grounds the input to the ignition.

I really like your teaching style and I have learned quite a bit from you. I have a MS170 second-hand to me, which starts nicely but only cuts about an inch before it runs out of power. Using your video I took it apart and cleaned the carburetor. I noticed right off that the fuel line was folded back on itself. The carburetor and fuel line look new so I put everything back together. Starts up fine but only cuts an inch or less. Is something not engaging properly? Thanks, could sure use some help.

Do you have a video to show how to replace the carburetor studs on a ms170. I overnighted and broke one. 😤
If you only use chainsaw once in a while; only use ready mix gas and oil sold at Canadian Tire or at your local chainsaw dealer. It has high octane and has a shelf life of 2 years, no more problems with your chainsaw gumming up after that.

Hello friend I am Brazilian , I wonder if it is possible to adapt a motorcycle exhaust or even make a homemade exhaust to put the chainsaw to reduce the noise of it , and if doing so the engine will lose some performance ?
