John Lewis was a truly genius.Too many times underràted...Dizzy is Dizzy...Wonderful!
Sonny Still Mean to Me, such a cheerful sound, remind me of the "the arrival of Spring in snowy hometown"
This is for me really Sonny’s album. The fluidity, the inventive solo’s, the melodic playing is absolute tops! This ”lone wolf” is imo one of the very best altoists ever! I was very lucky to see/meet Sonny several times in Europe, during the 70’s. This a great loosely swingin’ bebop LP with the best backing around. This kind of stuff is the very best in Jazz-times we’ve ever had and sadly no more. Therefore thanks for this fabulous upload. Enjoy, especially the moody track “Blues for Bird” . Enjoy this masterpiece & Cheers!
@Jacqueline Odigie Nicely said, Jacqueline. This is indeed a special album by the best in the business in those days of free-flowing inspirations and improvisations. Enjoy & Cheers!
Complete mastery by a group of the best the straight-ahead era.
What a gem on Thursday night in South Africa. On Blues for Bird , Stitt is playing Charlie Parker from Funky blues. Is true that,if there was no Bird there would not be Stitt. Well Stitt did respond to this allegation and said that he is not Bird. At the sametime there is Roy's touch from Dizzy's playing. Although Dizzy once refuted the similarity between him and Roy. To astitude listener Roy's influence is present in Dizzy's phrasing and that's beautiful.
"Blues for Bird" must have been poignant for Diz to play so soon after Bird's death just ten months earlier. I've also just realised that Sonny opens his solo with the same intro from Bird's "Funky Blues" solo. A wonderful tribute by him.
POPPACHUBBY CHUBBY ONE MILLION THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD OF THIS PRECIOUS ALBUM WITH THE BEST TRUMPET PLAYER OF ALL TIMES DIZZY GILLESPIE AND THE GREAT JOHN LEWIS IN THIS MARVELOUS PERFORMANCE THANKS AGAIN........!!!!!!!!!
Satchmo. Dizzy was one of the top 5 ever, but Armstrong was the GOAT.
Clifford Brown was even better!
A Dizzy, cuando era joven, no había con que darle.
Love all for what they put forth:
each player his or her(Melba, Lil, Mary Lou, etc.) own (wow)man,
no need for comparison(you did none of the playing!)
It's about the music and its neverending wisdom which is love♡
Everyone sounds great but Sonny is straight up amazing.
Charlie Chan He was, by far, the best Charlie. Dig & Cheers!
Excellent as Always, Pops. Today, believe it or not, I was planning on diving into Diz. Talk about GREAT timing on your upload! THANKS!

miles was the better trumpet player, but dizzy was an excellent entertainer....which only proves miles couldnt be diz and dizzy couldnt be miles
Erren Kelly I prefer Diz. Check for his album The Cool World...
Erren Kelly that album also has a young Kenny Barron just burnin
Dizzy was the master and Miles was the student.
Miles had a very open mind to different sounds and styles and by constantly changing his band, image, and sound along side with surrounding himself with the best and brightest of young musicians and composers he was able to keep himself up with the times.
Dizzy was a far better technician on the trumpet, but unfortunately stayed in his wheel house of playing his same famous compositions and style of playing throughout the decades with various musicians, which is perhaps why he isn't AS widely accepted as Miles today.
Without Dizzy there would be no Miles Davis. Both are giants, and they both had very different careers and lifestyles.
What ???? It seems you never approach a trumpet in your life !! Diz was by far best trumpet player than Miles Davis !!!
To each his own I like Fats Navarro.
