    Great video. The rubber gasket is much nicer than having to scrape off paper gasket like the older days.
    One tip learned the hard way recently. The o-ring on the plug can get really stuck. When opening the drain on the radiator, you will want to pull out while turning to un-stick it to keep from breaking things. I got lucky and I only broke guides on the drain plug itself, so that it would not lock back into place. New drain plug resolved the issue. Luckily I did not break the radiator plastic tabs inside that hole. This works with all GM's that have that plastic radiator drain.

    Thank you very much for this video, I replaced mine today for my Saab 9-3 2011 and just to let you know if you remove the coolant reservoir it will clear the space above the thermostat and you will find it very easy to remove all the three screws without any issues and yes replacing this fixed my low temp problem, now I have steady 9 o'clock temp.

    Just bought a 9-3 convertible that cold starts but won’t hot start as the thermostat and temp sensor likely need replacing. Temp gauge just cuts out after driving for 10 minutes and drops to zero. Good to know I can just fix it myself with a few hours and some parts. And so begins my obsessed Saab journey.

    Nice. One tip when changing the thermostat, remove the coolant reservoir. It will make a lot more room and make it a lot easier to reach all bolts on the thermostat housing.
    I've had problems with the OEM thermostat and I've had two of them now. The coolant temperature rises normally until it gets to around 75C. Then it slowly climbs to 79, leaving the gauge to sit just under the 9 o'clock mark. If I do a fast acceleration it drops back down to 74-75. It's the same on hot summer days, almost like the thermostat opens too early. It's not a problem with the temp sensor either. I've heard other people having the same problem with this OEM thermostat. I've now bought a Gates thermostat and I'll put that in and see if the problem goes away. Have you experienced any problems like this now when you changed yours?

    • @1CandyBoy
      @1CandyBoy Před 4 lety +1

      Yeap. Same problem with new OEM one showed in video, it opens at lower temperature. Maybe in desert climate it will reach 9th o' clock position, but not in colder climates. With CALORSTAT by Vernet TH6883.82J all is good :)

    • @johngeorgakis435
      @johngeorgakis435 Před 4 lety +1

      I've had trouble with my car's temp for the past year. I've changed two!! I had a similar problem to what you've metioned above. All OEM thermostats were changed to 82C and the 9 o'clock postion is 82C so something's going wrong. Either it's stuck open or you have a problem with the temp sensor. I would certainly stick to saab original parts though. Just my opnion. By the way great job to Jacob! I know what a pain in the neck job this is because I've done it twice. Greatings from Greece!!

    • @Mackan975
      @Mackan975 Před 4 lety

      @@1CandyBoy Interesting. I wonder why the OEM thermostat opens at a lower temperature than advertised. Manufacturing defect or they put the wrong type in the box maybe... When I've put in my new thermostat I'll boil the OEM one and measure it's exact opening temperature.

    The og 9-3/ng900 water pumps suck, but I've heard the NG9-3 pumps are worse as well. There's a banjo bolt that requires some serious patience to get back together on the og9-3, I hate that, but what I hate even more is that OEM water pumps only last about 50k miles. I put 25k on my Saab every year for work, so to change it every two years is pretty annoying lol. I've had other makes of cars where the water pumps made it to 200k miles, I don't see any reason why they should only last 50. I've talked to a guy who was a Saab tech, he said he thinks the design of the pump put the bearing too far out of line with the belt and the tension makes them fail there so quickly. For a while I even though it was just junky pumps so I went aftermarket... lol... those only lasted 30k.

    This was helpful, informative. I have a 2000 9-3 convertible, 88k miles. The check engine light came on last night. I noticed the temperature gauge did not move after roughly half an hour of driving/30 miles. Does a bad thermostat or sensor trigger the check engine light?

      I've got an 03 convertible, last year of the og93 and the thing eats a thermostat every couple of years, maybe every 3. It stops getting up to temp like the thermostat is stuck open, the gauge will start to rise but at a point it drops back to cold and after a few times it sets a check engine code.

    Hi! I have a 2007 Saab 9-3 2.8 turbo sport combi. I bought her 4 months ago. I got home yesterday and about ten minutes later my neighbor came out and said my car was on fire. I went out and it had obviously overheated and sprung a big leak and it was coolant steaming off the engine. I had no warning bells go off while driving, neither in the electronic display nor the temp gauge alerted me to anything. I did notice that the air hasn't wanted to get cool and the fan stayed on after I turned the car off, but I thought I needed an AC service and was told, "it's European, the fan is supposed to be on."
    I lifted the hood and the reservoir had split at the seams... I'm assuming that's because my thermostat is non-operable... or at least I hope. I'm hoping you can tell me where to look? because I know it's different and miserably difficult to change for a thermostat, but I can't find it at all. Do I have to take the heat shield off the turbo to see it? Or is it further under the reservoir and I have to remove that to see? There is no room between the engine and hood back there like in this 2.0 vid....
    Also, I'm hearing you have to buy the whole housing for the 2.8l, is that true?

      Yes, as soon as the temp sensor reads 100C from the engine coolant passing through it - fans stage 1 kicks in. More info is available via WIS.

    A question from another Saab enthusiast: the gauge on my 9-3 (2.0 Aero 2005 petrol) has the tendency not to go down completely after switching the engine off and pulling the key out. It normally stays at 1/4 so the next time I start the car and the engine reaches temperature, the gauge goes to 3/4. When I measure it with the OBD tool, it seems to run at 95-99 degrees Celsius, and never had overheating problems, thankfully! One way of getting the gauge down is by removing fuse 4 and putting it back on but that doesn't resolve the issue in the long term as the gauge still prefers not to go down after a while.
    Do you think it could be a sensor problem or a problem with the instrument cluster?
    Thank you for the video! Have fun with your Saabs and stay safe:)

    • @nikolayphilipov
      @nikolayphilipov Před rokem

      I think the only permanent solution is to replace the instrument cluster or the electric motor behind the gauge if you don't want to replace the whole cluster. I have the motor but I haven't done it yet as it's a bit of a job removing half of the dashboard. For now I just do the Fuse 4 thing and keep an eye on the coolant temp with an OBD 2 device. Hope this helps!
