  • In 1984 Australian [Jon Sieben], swimming in lane six, had won the 200 butterfly in a big upset over West German Michael Groß. When Australia’s Duncan Armstrong won this event in Seoul in the world record time of 1:47.25, his coach, Laurie Lawrence, shouted out, “That’s right, mate! Lucky lane 6!” Armstrong’s victory was one of the biggest upsets in Seoul, as he came into the Olympics ranked 46th in the world, after ranking 25th in 1987.
There were several contenders considered before the race, but Armstrong was not among them. Sweden’s Anders Holmertz had won the 1987 Europeans, while Groß was the 1986 World Champoin. Groß still held the world record, set when he won the 1984 Olympic gold medal. American Matt Biondi was formidable, but he was slightly better in the sprints. The fastest time in the prelims was set by Poland’s Artur Wojdat. In the final, Armstrong lined up next to Biondi in lane five. Armstrong swam as close to Biondi’s lane marker as he could, drafting in his wake for the first 100 metres. Biondi led at 150 with Holmertz second, but Armstrong came home the fastest for the gold medal, Holmertz in second and Biondi dropping back to bronze.

Part of Armstrong's training regimen included practicing drafting as directed by his coach Laurie Lawrence. Armstrong got on the lane line from the very first meters and maintained his position relative to Biondi the entire race. Notice how Biondi swam on the lane line closer to lane 6 than lane 4. That's because Biondi did not want to create a wake for Artur Wojdat to ride. Wojdat was the world record holder in the 400 freestyle and could come home on Biondi.
Armstrong was in the last heat of the preliminaries for the 200 free so he knew that Biondi was second fastest up to that point so Armstrong wanted lane six knowing in the final Biondi would take it out fast while swimming in lane 5. Also in the last heat of the preliminaries was Gross and Armstrong had Gross beat but let Gross pass him so that Armstrong would end up fourth in the preliminaries. It was brilliant strategy all the way. He absolutely deserved that win and it was disgusting how the commentator, John Naber, implied that he somehow won unfairly.

The race starts at 10:44. One of the American commentators seems to be implying that Armstrong didn't deserve his victory, that it was more the result of a cunning strategy than swimming talent and hard work.

well yeah, it was both but he would have never gone that fast had biondi not dragged him all the way. Duncan Scott did the same thing with Nathan Adrian, as did Lezak to Alain bernard in 4x100 medley and free relays respectively, those guys never went that fast ever again.

@@sethaldrich6902same with Phelps. He always dragged of every quick swimmer then came over the top, not to mention smoking pot before the race to increase the pain threshold ! Damn these cheats hey? They should all have to swim in a pool on their own to make it fair! Should not be allowed to wear smooth head Capps either as they reduce drag.
Gross doesn't cut his toe nails either to get more drive from his feet.
      Cheers

I'm an American and I agree. I remember watching this race in 1988 and was disgusted with the commentator's implication that somehow Armstrong won unfairly. The commentator's name is John Naber. He won both backstroke events in 1976 but he's always been arrogant. In 1985 I met Naber - he made a point to say how lousy the swimmers from my state are.

While I have your attention I'm just curious even though we didn't go to the games in 1980 I know that the British and the Australians broadcast it among other nations NBC did not go so there's another Facebook page I'm sorry CZcams page I can't remember the person's name right now who has not all but several maybe 10 of the events that took place for something events in 1980 and very few also of the 76 games in Montreal so we only have the women's gold medal winning 400 free relay I can see the men's 200 butterfly the men's mile I can see the men's 100 freestyle. Oh and the men's 4x2 from 1976 as well but we can't see any other races and I don't know why that is. Do you know if any outlets where we can find them are we barred from seeing the Montreal games I even tried to pull up CBC TV but we can't see any at all That I know of. If you have any information or inside on this I'd appreciate your assistance because I never got I was too young to see the Montreal games. And then there's only one English speaking tape of a race from Moscow that I've seen that's the Australian 4 00 medley relay where there are men when. So in other words like Michelle Ford's gold medal winning race in the 800 freestyle isn't even available. Any thoughts?
