    Oh my god. I didn't realize until now despite how many times I've watched the series, that Mayor Dewey said he "crashed the mayor mobile into the only cell tower in town" during the speech...
    No wonder the messages didn't send not even in the town. It makes so much sense now 😂

    Connie really is a perfect foil to Steven, keeping him grounded and connected to the human part of his character and preventing him from getting fully re-enmeshed in Rose's wartime thought process & decision-making. However, part of being that type of character means she also has to make mistakes, which up until now haven't been major. Her getting brainwashed by Pearl and accidentally breaking a kid's arm were pretty benign issues when compared to Steven's misadventures, each only taking half an episode to resolve. But when she makes a major mistake that directly impacts their relationship people lose their minds and forget that she's still only human, and just 13 years old at that. Her ghosting him was an excellent story-telling choice, and it was crucial in elevating the show's maturity & intensity level in preparation for what comes next.

    When i was younger i thought this was the worst arc in S.U but now that i grew up i think i can kind of understand what is going through connie's mind, she is just processing trauma of seeing steven being abducted and feeling useless in that situation, so i think we shouldn't be too harsh on her

    Connie wasn't living in a remote village in the mountains of Papua New Guinea; she was at most a few miles away on the other side of greater Beach City. When Steven ghosted her in Full Disclosure, Connie went physically to the beach house to try to find out what was going on, even if she had to take a bus or walked for an hour. Steven preferred to wallow and mope instead of getting off his ass as Connie did.
    This was to me the dreariest arc in SU.

    So this is the first episode where it’s properly obvious, but this has been happening for a while.. It gets kind of blown off (I think this is on purpose to distract from it) because it’s not what Steven wanted to talk about, but you may have noticed that more than once, pearl tries to say… /something?/,,, about the history of the gem war.. but she clamps her hand over her mouth, seemingly almost involuntarily.
    Looking back people found a bunch of instances of pearl covering her mouth when she was about to talk about something, but it didn’t become something that fans started looking into until around this episode.

    These episodes opened considerable controversy between those who sympathized more with Steven and those who did with Connie.
    The title "Dewey Wins" comes from a notorious Chicago newspaper headline in the 1948 U.S. presidential election where long-running poll findings that appeared to show that Republican candidate Thomas Dewey was going to trounce President Harry Truman (the Democratic incumbent), and when early exit polls seemed to bring confirmation one newspaper jumped the gun and announced Dewey's victory, only to be later confounded. Truman took great pleasure in waving that headline around.

    People rag on connie for behaving this way while not thinking how steven would feel but everyone deals with emotions differently, plus shes fucking THIRTEEN. She was wise enough to know to back off and not interact might she say something that offends steven. Of course, the passive agression is there but good people do bad things too, accidental or not. This kinda reminds me of mindful education's message, 'something i did that failed to be charming' being connie. Folks praise that episode to no end yet forget that this is one of those times

    This whole "connie is mad at steven(even though he did the right thing)" arc honestly always gets on my nerves so bad. There was literally nothing they could have done. Aquamarine literally had everyone else paralyzed, including alexandrite who is far stronger than steven and connie/stevonnie. Steven didnt just "give up" like she says he did

    • @user-pt5cl2ro6f
      @user-pt5cl2ro6f Před 11 měsíci +3

      You are also misunderstanding Connie's feelings. Of course, he didn't give up. But for Connie, _it felt like_ he did.
      maybe it's irrational, but it's the truth. She's upset. Feeling upset, even if you feel like you shouldn't, is valid. And perhaps she's even more upset with herself than with Steven. I certainly would be if a friend was abducted, brushes it off (even as a coping mechanism), and doesn't completely understand the weight of the situation (even if it's not entirely their fault. Again, inner coping mechanism.)
      I had a falling out with a friend, tho for different reasons of course, and it felt just like this. The ghosting, complicated feelings, and wanting to reconcile but also needing space. It's an experience that I wouldn't want for anyone, but could only be understood by those who have. Somehow, friendship fights feel worse than romantic relationship fights.

    • @xmant8842
      @xmant8842 Před 11 měsíci +2

      @user-pt5cl2ro6f I guess I can understand that. My main problem is the show treats steven like he's fully in the wrong and connie like she's fully in the right. They removed any and all nuance from the situation

    • @baraxor
      @baraxor Před 11 měsíci +1

      Connie wasn't (or shouldn't be; who knows what the Crewniverse really thought) dismayed at Steven for giving up at the end of the fight, it was for giving up at the beginning. He never intended to fight Aquamarine; he had already decided that his mother was a criminal and that by surrendering "Rose Quartz" the Diamonds would leave Earth alone. Connie and Sadie were desperately battling the Topazes while Steven just stood around in his bubble, he refused to fuse with Connie; he had come to his decisions without ever consulting Connie. These actions were completely contrary to what Steven and Connie promised Pearl back in Sworn to the Sword, and I assumed that this was the moral lesson of Dewey Wins!.
      Also, Aquamarine's stasis wand was directional only; she could not defend herself from enemies attacking from different directions. Aquamarine could freeze Stevonnie, or Alexandrite coming from the opposite direction outside the ship, but not both.

    This is the only episode where I actually kinda hated connie, like the poor boy sacrificed himself for everyone’s safety and faced so much trauma. I get it you feel betrayed but your feelings shouldn’t come first, steven’s should since he just arrived home. I don’t get it she immediately got mad at him when she just saw him come back from a scary situation she should’ve assured him and told him how happy they were to see him then the next day tell him that you needs some space to think, not just get mad and ignore him like that. I know they’re just children but It feels off and not fair, it’s not like connie to do this ya know?

    • @thecasual408
      @thecasual408 Před 11 měsíci +6

      that’s an understandable stance but i don’t think Connie was mad at Steven at all. like she gets why he did it and isn’t like actually angry at him. she’s just upset because for the whole show leading up to this, Steven and Connie have been working and training and spending time together and essentially made a promise to not leave each other out of their battles. they promised they’d face everything together. and like. Connie experienced trauma too! like idk but if my best and only friend sacrificed himself to space and went missing for days that’d be pretty traumatizing as well. neither side is completely wrong here. and yeah they’re just kids so their emotional maturity isn’t perfect

      @user-pt5cl2ro6f Před 11 měsíci +3

      I can't believe what I'm reading. You're saying she should've disregarded her own emotions in favor of Steven. It's an unhealthy, and frankly deaf, advice. In the grand scheme of thing, it may look like prioritizing Steven comfort should be her first reaction, as her role of his best friend. But that's not her responsibility, he has his family for that. _She_ is his friend, and she has the right to feel upset in an upsetting situation, even if it has already been resolved (in fact, it may have been resolved too fast, as feelings of fear and dread hasn't even sunk in yet). She's not Pearl, she doesn't have to put herself aside in favor of Steven.
      As for your statement on how she should've handled things. She's _13_. She may be written as the mature one, but keep that in mind. SU as a show has always tried to portray real life emotions for real life situations. And Real people don't have 1 consistent character trait that never derails. Connie _is allowed_ to derail. In real life, she would've acted reasonably. To reiterate what I've said in another comment, "You are also misunderstanding Connie's feelings. Of course, he didn't give up. But for Connie, it felt like he did. Maybe it's irrational, but it's the truth. She's upset. Feeling upset, even if you feel like you shouldn't, is valid. @@user-pt5cl2ro6f that’s not what I meant!! I didn’t say she should discard her feelings all together I said for that moment hers doesn’t come first, because who knows what steven saw in space maybe he’s injured, maybe he got tortured, thats why everyone should make sure that he’s feeling ok then bring that sacrifice thing up later like the next day or something.
      For your next point yeah i see that might be realistic especially because they are children it’s normal for them to not know how to regulate their emotions (heck I don’t know how to myself lol) it just sucks seeing steven getting all the blame and feeling like everything is his fault where it was no one’s, it was a situation where whatever they do won’t work so sacrificing himself seems like the only option. and her he is feeling like he is a horrible person :(

      @@selkie2737 I see what you're saying about the show's stance, but in the Kevin Party episode, it's clear that she didn't know what to do after ghosting him for the first time, and how it wasn't a completely wise or good decision. She was confused and hurt, but dealt with it awkwardly. So it's not like she really had too much of a moral high ground even according to the show.

    I was really mad at Conny for making him wait that long.. Ya he was dumb for turning himself in without more a fight..
