    I love it when people who own dressage horses are open to jumping. I love how you change what you do because I agree; dressage is repetitive. That's why I enjoy jumping more than dressage but I am much better at dressage. I hope that Gee has more confidence if you ever try it again. It was lovely to see!

    Anyone who judges a horse by their first jumps are idiots 🤦‍♀️ one of the best jumpers I’ve ridden fell over his first jump 👌😂

    • @tigerwings2551
      @tigerwings2551 Před 3 lety +66

      One of the most motivated jumpers I've ever ridden was a dressage horse who literally snapped the pole on two on his first jump. He never got to be the best jumper as his owner didn't like show jumping and from the outside he looked horrible, but when you got on him and FELT how much he wanted to do it you just knew that that horse had some real potential.
      Sometimes there are a lot of things you can't know about a horse until you're on them. I wish I could ride that horse again

      @egeegee7146 Před 3 lety +4

      @@theerinwilliams this was my take on this too. I would have approached this from the ground first so he gets some free jumping in. That way he learns to have fun and express himself. Then once ridden you do need to allow him his head and neck to stretch in jumping otherwise he’s going to resent it. If he decides to buck and muck about after that’s normally exuberance but your riding skill can sit that. Be prepared to give him his head.

      @maiabeau1603 Před 3 lety +2

    good for you ... no one needs to 'judge' this ... you are giving him added experience and some fun, I had a jumper that I taught dressage, I used long reins and walked behind him ... hacking, up down hills etc etc... they have to have a variety of experiences to enjoy life...... this is so good for him and it takes time to get them comfortable with new things ... @@theerinwilliams Exactly! I've always been of the opinion that cross discipline training is incredibly important. Not only does it keep the horse engaged, but they learn something in another activity that will help them with their main training. Barrel horses focus on tight turns; that would be a great help to a focused jumper. Pole bending would be a great tool to help with flying lead changes and stride length. And dressage provides all of them with flexibility. :)

    You are t kidding when you said he was a beautiful boy, he is one gorgeous horses I think I have ever seen and I’ve seen a lot of friesian horses.

      He’s actually Dutch warm blood, but he does get confused as a Friesian a lot!

  • @miekevanderwesthuizen968

    He looks very good - he keeps his collection after the jump which really helps with using his back and neck correctly. I think he jumps "weird" because he is used to a collected canter in frame (which is amazing and very hard to achieve!) instead of a more forward canter with a "flatter" neck seen when jumpers jump

    I completely agree with what you said regarding doing different things. Dressage horses can benefit from some jumping work, and jumpers can benefit from dressage work. Not only is it something new and different, but doing one will give you and the horse tools that they can bring back to the other.
