Synth hack: KORG MONO/POLY trick to get the LFO into audio rate

  • This is a cool little trick that makes use of the in-between settings on MG1 (LFO) of Korg’s Mono/Poly. There are three in-between settings all generating different rates, all pushing the LFO into audio-rate territory, allowing for FM-style bell-like sounds on the venerable Mono/Poly.
I havent seen this documented anywhere on CZcams.
I am not aware if the Behringer Reissue has the same features - do let me know in the comments below if you tried it and what the result was!

I tried it on the Behringer Monopoly, and yes it works. The LED on the Frequency knob of MG1 will show 'continuous red' instead of the fast flicker, as above. (because the Behringer LED runs faster than the Korg). But if you set the knob in between the wave forms, and listen to the sound, you hear it switch from a Square or Saw wave to a steady single-pitched frequency.' I found what really makes a difference for getting all those 'weird' sounds is putting the Transpose in the 'Up' position; also using the Square wave on the LFO/MG1. You get all kinds of weird noises in the Transpose Up setting. It gives you-not necessarily higher notes-but the higher Frequencies, where FM lives.

You, sir, are the first one to take on the challenge of checking whether the Behringer does have the same feature! 👍👏 Thanks a lot and do let me - and everyone else here - know!!! Im seriously curious if they implemented this little quirk!

wow that is amazing! Do you think it's meant to be like that? or is it a kind of lucky error?

I tried it on mine. It works, except I can't find the sweetspot between triangle and downsaw on mine.

Interesting! Yeah definitely a similarity there. I wasnt thinking too hard about what I was playing - if I remember correctly its just a bunch of stacked fifths that I didnt spend much time thinking about, just how my fingers landed on the keyboard :-)
