In this episode, watch Marc Daniel Nelson break down his personal Pro Tools Template. Marc walks through his in-the-box chain all the way down to his analog chain. Marc has been asked about showing more depth about what his digital template looks like, and he is going to show us that, along with what his out of the box chain looks like. For his out of the box chain, he will be talking about the summing, the compression, the EQ, and the conversion, because even with the conversion it is going to make a big difference on the sound.
People talk a lot about why they designed their templates the way they did, and for Marc, is was about making it easy. He wanted to make it so that anyone who opens the session is able to navigate it and understand what is happening. This goes all the way down to labelling auxiliaries, sends, and more, and colour coding everything so that it is basically identical from song to song.
Marc will be demonstrating what in-the-box vs out-of-the-box sounds like on a rock song. He uses a song he just mixed that was Geoff Emerick's final project before he passed away. This song is “Aimee” by Lena Anderssen, produced by Geoff Emerick, and Niclas Johannesen.

Do you use mixing templates? Why or why not?
I used to but I i started using blank projects since I felt that it kept me away from evolving and innovating, but I have patterns
I have tried using templates but i personally like to have my session as small as possible i don't like to have things that I'm not using. However regarding hardware i think a template is a huge time saver for routing and overall ordering and organizing all the i/o
Yes! Saves time routing, which in turn allows the song to stay fresh, without me hearing it so much I become numb to it by the time I’m ready to mix
Not yet! I should, but I'm still learning how to use my gear, software and plugins. I don't know how to use a template though! How do I get all my tracks into my template? I honestly don't know the process for this.
Im mostly recording rap and it really helps to have the Templates i customized to the Rappers who are coming over Most offen, so i can jumpstart from a good Version of their voice, mixing Templates i rarely use, Just some labeled groups and routings are Set up
Thank you all for the great words, feedback and emails. A little Disclaimer: I am reading a handful of comments stating that the ITB mix could in fact be better or that the OTB destroys the ITB mix. This video was put together to showcase what MY personal template and OUTBOARD chain does for me. I still mix ITB a lot and in fact can beat my analog mixes. It just depends on the style of music and what your end game is. There are so many things that come into play when mixing ITB vrs OTB. For me, I cant find anything plugin wise that gets me the certain values that I have in my hardware. But, I can say that my OTB when used right on the right content is way better. But not always is the case. The point in why I use a template isnt so everything goes through the same plugins, it is to get me a head start to be creative. So most of my time is not spent on setting up mixes and I can then focus on the creative side of mixing. Once its close, there is a whole new world to hyper focus on the small details. Its really fun!
Thanks ever so much Marc!! This is such a wonderful video, I really appreciate your amazing input!!
Also thanks Marc for your insight. The first time i watched one of your videos was with Vintage King doing the UAD Apollo recording video and I thought this is another person ( like Warren ) i could listen to all day long and never stop learning from. Cheers matey
@@Joey-rp5vg Thanks, Joey. Keep it real my dude.
Can you share a video where ITB is better than OTB just for the shake of the conversation ? Thx great content
Great video! Can you please share the link for the vocal video you are talking about? With de-essing backing vocals etc? I only find your reverb video - which is also a must see. Thanks!
How is it possible I never heard of this man till your channel ??????
Happy to introduce him to you Gilbert! Thanks ever so much for sharing!
thank youuuu
And THANK YOU
This is one of the best examples I've seen on CZcams of exactly why I love my analog summing setup and the rest of my analog outboard.
Thanks ever so much
Wow, such a huge difference between ITB and OTB. I love the room Marc is in. Simple and effective. Just like the templates. No need to make it more complicated than it needs to be.
Thanks ever so much John for sharing!
This was a great vid. It’s come at a time I’m debating on weather to stay hybrid or go fully ITB. You can clearly hear in the examples here that the ITB sounds less defined and flatter than the OTB. The OTB example has real front to back/ left and right depth. That being said I think taking this into consideration when approaching a mix ITB, you can generally get most of the way to an OTB mix. I think part of what maybe makes Marks OTB sound great is his choice of gear and him himself. I’ve done many a mix ITB where I’ve beaten out other mixer to the job who’ve been using “quality” outboard. But nothing is a magic bullet.
@@tiekumark @producelikeapro here are my questions, was the OTB processing with tracks mixed in the box and recorded without outboard gear? Or was everything recorded with outboard and that was only a comparison of master bus ITB vs OTB?
Id like to hear the difference of a track fully recorded ITB vs OTB including master bus processing. And then a comparison with hybrid.
OTB sounds like what I strive for and never achieve (ITB). Can I just ask Santa Claus for this analog chain and be done?
:)
I really love the way Marc explains stuff......never heard about him before but last few videos with him is phenomenal 😍😍 Thank you
Thanks ever so much! Yes, it’s a real pleasure to be able to have Marc be able to share his incredible experience with us all!
Liked before watching. I always use a template when i remember to. Trouble is, i don't always!
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
OTB is the thing on this example.Absolutely fantastic tones
Warren, thanks again for your channel. I've learned so much in such a small amount of time. I didn't go to school for engineering so I really appreciate that I'm learning from the best. You and all your guests have inspired me more than I can possibly share!
Marc, I'm becoming more and more of a fan as I watch your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insight into the process. You're helping us all get better each day! Keep up the awesome work!
Been wanting to get a Weimaraner for my studio too. They add this cool warmth and sheen to mixes that other dog breeds can't seem to capture.

Marc is my new favorite person on CZcams. Thank you!
Wow! That was another great session Warren! I've got lots to do with my template this week. I really like Marc's approach to sound. The OTB sound really opened up my ears for how things can sound full and 20% more alive!
These videos are really helpful, tightly produced, and fun; thanks for bringing a relatable yet pro vibe to this format.
Thanks ever so much! Yes, Marc rocks

Awesome, always great to learn from Marc, great tutorials! ✌
Thanks ever so much Ady!!
wow such fullness and round and warm clean distinctive out of the box haven't been there for a while looks like it costs a bit for proper chain love the music thank you like the template
Thanks ever so much Edward!!
Yeah I am adding up at least 20k in his main 4 boxes, not counting his extra stuff. If I win the lottery I'll buy this stuff too.
What a difference !!! NICE Thank u.

@@Producelikeapro I adoringly want to nickname him "Sauce and Juice" =-) I LOVE his videos, and yours as well. Thank you
Thank you! I would love to hear more of the PEP in the AD8. I am so intrigued by that process.
Great video but I'd like to point out one thing. In my humble opinion, it's not the fact that he's using outboard analog gear in the mix bus that's making it sound so different from the ITB version. It looks like he's not doing a lot to his mix bus channel as one would do when mixing completely ITB, which makes sense since he's doing it with analog gear. That's fine, it's just a different way to go about it. Having mixed a lot of records in the box and a lot in a hybrid setup, I can definitely say now that you CAN make a mix sound just a great with plugins - the path, however, is quite different. I can see now that it's pointless to compare analog gear with their emulation plugin counterpart because everything will react differently. I find myself using two, three compressors on something whilst in the box and perhaps only the one when using a great analog compressor like a Neve 2254/E or an 1176. Another good example: a pair of 'real' distressors with the British mode engaged on a drum bus sound a certain way that it's difficult to replicate with plugins. You will, however, come very close by probably using small doses of several compressors in series. I'm done with the whole Analog VS Digital debate. Main advantage of analog? You go from A to B quite faster!
Very true
Thanks a lot! Good luck!
I run my stereo bus through a pair of Heritage Audio 1073. They have a "line gain" knob that drives the transformer. I keep all the EQ bands off and just drive the transformers into my elysia compressor. I do this on literally every mix.
I've tried that..running the mix like this : out thru my Benchmark DAC on Pangea interconnects through my Rupert Neve 5012s and back in through my Lavry converters.
Different, yes. Not convinced about an actual improvement, but more testing needed.
@@stevebass8352 I for sure notice a difference with my 1073's. Especially with metal. It seems to blend out the balance a bit more too..
Thank you Marc for doing this series, and thank you Warren for sharing it on your channel. Dynamic duo!
What is Make Mine Music?
Thanks ever so much! That's Marc's own idea Make.Mine.Music!
What an extraordinary delicious setup for a mastering 'booth'...
And the hardware as well. Wow... I want one :-)
cooo coool
Thanks ever so much Niels!
Another great video. I really liked seeing a hybrid breakdown of digital in the box and analog work flow. I'm trying to incorporate some analog pieces so this is really helpful in understanding that chain of I/O and converters.
Thanks ever so much
Thanks, Emily.
Thank you Marc!
Thanks ever so much Audrey!
So, so good for the nuances of inbox and out of the box. Huge gains but also big money to obtain the analog chain. Thanks for the comparison!
Thanks Michael
Thanks for putting this up. Firstly..I was glad to see the little Benchmark DAC there..I have used mine for a decade or more. Secondly..the analogue mix sounds so far superior to the ITB I'm in shock....
Nice work..thank you.
Great vid. Learned a lot. Thanks!
Thanks ever so much Erik!
Thanks sir, we are waiting for Marc's predelay episode, I hope he remember it
Love learning about everyones templates to make my own someday!
Thanks ever so much Eric!
The difference between the Itb mix versus OTB summing whit SSL sigma and all analog compressors and EQ,s is huge. Daniel points out some of main differences between ITB summing and OTB analog summing and that,s wider Stereo and more depth in the sonic image. Thats something you can get with cheaper mixer or passive summing mixer like SM pro audio PM 8.
A Very interesting video would be a compression between emulated analog summing ITB with Waves NLS / Slate digital virtual console collection and OTB summing with SSL Sigma.
Dang I can't afford out of the box lol, sounds so much better! Thanks for posting Warren!
Thanks ever so much
This is great, should make more videos of people sharing there go to plugins for each task just like this!!! Well explained to the point go to plugins for each task great 👍🏻
The smearing on the lead vocal was obvious in the ITB version. Beautiful vocal clarity on the OTB.
so good!!!!
Thanks ever so much
It's this guy: "Switchcraft". ❤️
Thank you Marc, very useful for me... a freak composer non-genre specific.
Thanks ever so much Brian!
@ 2:22 Fat Wreck Chords! I love Fat, they got all my favorite bands.
Love this!! Could you all do more string instrument/orchestra related mixing content? Could be anything, mixing strings for pop music, mixing classical orchestra, mixing strings for film. Would love to learn more! Thank you all for making amazing content!
Wonderful video, and an amazing song/ mix. I listened to your journey with hardware and started to smile. Which Burl did you use and why did you make a move from using it? I've been eyeing the B2 and heard some amazing reviews. But then someone like you say that you swapped it out because things didn't translate correctly over genre's!!! That's a huge statement, and good for thought.
I also noticed that you have the DW pres in your studio. Sooooo it looks like you have gone from having a ton of analog tone to a much cleaner recording and mixing experience. Do you miss having the weight of some of the tried and true analog gear or outboard pres like vintech, BAE, etc? Do you miss the tone that Burl adds, as well as, the weight of the tape emulations/effects on all your mixes?
Please educate me!!! I love this video by the way.
thanks for showing us the gear you use ! esp the OTB ! and the converters (most dont talk about this)
have you tried the Neve Master Bus processor Marc? it has the Stereo Field editor + neve tone + compressor......any thoughts on that if youve tried it?
2) could you talk abt the extremely flexible Tegeler compressor? does it serve many many roles and sound wise do you think it is up there?
thankyou!
I have been watching a lot of videos last 15 years ,but this one is very very good, simple and informative , thank you for this,i didnt understand when you go out of the box and into sigma tegeler api chain ,you end into two tracks that are also treated with plugins ?
Holy Jesus!!! He is incredible, Yes I use templates but I gotta rethink my process now. I really don't know if my system can handle that much processing, that worries me, Warren what does he process in 24/98 or what, and what do you record in ?
OTB sounds amazing….in this video, compared to the ITB. Marc, could you go back and show us how you would / could make your ITB sound closer to your OTB here? Width and depth, etc. Such an amazing 3D difference. Love what you share with us!
Awesome. Love the analog. I have a Boxer as my sidekick, maybe I should try a Weimaraner. 🐾
PHENOMENAL🎶
Marc, Amazing Video, thanks for sharing your insights. I also feel there is a difference when out of the box. Maybe it's the 5 % and the feel you get when interacting with the gear, that gives you a greater feeling of engagement than a sterile mouse. I am hybrid, with my 2 bus or summed mix Analogue. I've never been able to match it in the box 100%. Do you ever look to clip your AD converters or is that an in the box process for you?
that API 560 trick is a revelation!
Analog Version is Awesome !
Sick diffrence between ITB and OTB . Thanks for the video i love u
Thanks ever so much Tim!
Great video. Marc has a fantastic sound. And I think it is possible ITB, too.
So do I 100%! And agreed Marc Rocks!!
Thank you, Christian
Freakin Incredible!
Thanks ever so much
Thanks thanks thanks very much 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😊
... and thank you to Geoff Emerick
Yers, truly amazing Engineer!
Very true Gary. A freaking legend. The epitome of the word.
wow...i wished i had some analog gear to prosess my music (im not by any means professional). The difference in my ears is the analog has more energy and more defined. Its like the analog prosessing is the thing that tips it over to be perfect :)
thnx for this great video Marc..i love this series :)
Thanks you 😎😉
Nice Video...do you colored your SSL SIGMA Black?
*Gigantic* difference between the two. It would be interesting to see how close you could get the ITB mix to that OTB version by AB'ing and mixing toward that goal. Surely there are things that can be done to open up the ITB mix fuller and wider if you aimed for that with the OTB version as your reference. If nothing can be done and this is as close as you can get, it would be a devastating blow to ITB, and the phrase "It's not the gear, it's how you use it" should never be used again. So I'd love to see that challenge met if possible.
It would be even more devastating if his ITB set up blew his OTB setup out of the water. 😮😊
Ohhh thanks alot man! I'd be really interested to see that DAC interface thing you where talking about possibly doing! As every DAC/interface has their own sound, I know it, and so does anyone worth a salt in this business. But many don't talk about that! And nowadays getting further along into this, that, along with the utilities of said interface...are more important in the long run than they used to be for me. Especially since I need to upgrade in the next few years, or sooner! So please do that DAC/Interface shootout, or whatever...! I can really hear the massive difference the OTB stuff makes on your tracks! It did the same for me working on an SSL9000J! Everything....was exactly the same, but I couldn't figure out why it sounded so much better at my work! Well it turns out(what I didn't realize when I was doing it at the time, being a somewhat noob to mixing on a desk, years ago) that the mix was going from the computer out through the 192 converters, through the desk, and back into the 192 into the computer! So just running it through the system was making it sound way bigger(without adding any FX, plugins or anything at all)and giving it a bigger soundstage, separating all the instruments, and also giving them depth of field as well! All by just running it through the SSL900J console! That's the ONLY difference! Oh and the bass was deeper and tighter, and the highs where more airy, and higher! All that by just running it through the desk! If that's what the Sigma does....by golly I want one! Otherwise I want a mini SSL900J like they made with that SSL Six mixer! Please SSL make one!
The OTB version sounds amazing compared to the ITB one but you have to consider that he has built the mix into the OTB chain and when you rely on a masterbus processing during mixing when you deactivate it at the end the mixing process will always sounds different.
Absolutely! This is a great example of different perspectives and ways of working!
@@Producelikeapro of course! You make great sounding mixes ITB and OTB. This kind of "top-down" approach it's a bit tricky but it works for me (and i use a ITB mixbus chain)
Thanks ever so much for sharing
This is a very good point and a great way to describe things. Thank you
Absolutely Marc!!
definitely curious how Marc found a black paneled SSL summing unit
My 2 favorite people!
Thanks ever so much!
What is a pulverizing de-esser?
I have a question, I agree the OTB is so much better, but when you compared the 2, did you just turn off the analog chain (for the ITB mix) or apply extra stuff (ITB) to emulate that analog chain?
Nice
Thanks ever so much!
Wow... The difference OTB vs ITB. Well to answer your question. My everything is limited to the size of my wallet so not much outboard mastering gear on my rack. I have an Orban 424a stereo comp, but I use it for drum room mics going in, with de-essing, few KT76 and EQP-KT... you get what you can afford. I think most of the time it's down to using your ears, cheap is not always bad and expencive is not always great. It's how you apply those.
Thanks a lot for this great insight ! Would have loved to hear how you use the Tegeler Schwerkraft e.g. what you like about it. From the reviews i've seen, i found it not too exciting soundwise (the motorized knobs / plugin control seem awesome though). The reviews used it mostly on drums, had it acting as sort of a transient designer, but not much unlike the many available plugins...so i was surprised to see it in your master chain. However, thanks again and cheers from germany !
Hi there.. There is a video of me that they did a few years back that showcases it. I waould say its far from boring :)
@@marcdanielnelson317 Haha, thanks for the hint ! Just found and watched it, and it seems neat indeed :) Have you ever tested the Vertigo Sound VSC-2 for your master chain ? From your choices i could imagine that you'd quite like this one too...it does some magic to transients in a similar (and maybe even more elegant) way that i can't describe..and it's made in germany too ;)
it's like you add a reverb on the snare when you put on the analog-chain... weird. how do you get close to this without getting bankrupt?
OTB is not just width, but it does something really hefty in the low end, to my ear.
Thank you as always! great video.
@marc daniel nelson Why would you put your Print AD as a Hardware Insert? Why not just output the Mix Bus to the JCF then come back into Pro Tools Digitally? Wouldn't you avoid double conversion this way by not using the Orion Hardware Insert to bring the JCF into play?
If I understand your routing correctly it is: Orion - Sigma - Outboard - PRINT AD - DA - MON.
Would love your thoughts on this
Who the hell thought the IDB version sounded better?? Haha, it's night and day! OTB, Big Win!
anyone know whats his IEM hes using in this vid? (earbuds/earpiece)
Looks like a lot of work...but...I really dig that OTB sound.
Thanks ever so much Keith!
Its not soo bad Keith. Once its setup. Its lightning fast.
Definitely Marc!
Very interesting! I’ve also seen an Eric valentine video recently where he claims converters are such a small part of the sound that he doesn’t care too much about using a particular converter. I’d be curious to see Marc’s comparison!
Hi Marcus, one is on the way. I do a shootout of 4 different converters. Fun test.
Here's one I don't get: when you've got all these plugins sitting there, ready to go on a bus for drums, lets say. Are these plugins engaged from the very beginning? Because my instinct would be to build a good sound from the sources and then add in these plugins as they become necessary? Otherwise, I would feel like I'm trying to EQ something that is getting compressed elsewhere? Thanks.
I think he just used it as a sound he likes to mix into. Like it’s the sound of his desk. The way you would always use a specific channel on your desk for, let’s say snare, because it’s sounds just a tiny bit better than on every other channel, because it has just a bit more high mids and a little more controlled lows than any other channel on your board.
I’d agree with Friedrich. In addition since he is so familiar which what plugin adds, he already has the sound in his head what it will be like when he engages certain things on the bus. So when he’s adjusting the snare he’s probably like "oh I think I want some more smack, but that’s probably what the distressor will do anyways".
@@creeker90 But Chris: that sounds like he's engaging the plugin AFTER he's already mixed, hypothetically, the drums pre-bus? Then click it on when you're ready. That's where I'm coming from, if you take my meaning? I would leave all the bus plugins off, level and expand the drum channels individually. Now they sound "good."
Once that's done, time to punch in my bus compressors and my Pultec EQ, etc? But in the video it seems like at least some of those plugins are turned on by default. I know this is probably a bit pedantic, but it's those details we're all after here, right?
Anyways, thanks to both of you for the discussion!
@@TomBelknapRoc Hi Thomas.. Good question. In my template, I have ALL of the plugins inactive when starting. Including my Analog chain. When I build a mix slowly I start adding different engaged plugins and it helps heavy hand certain things like eq. I don't have to add a ton of eq to all tracks of drums if I add a slight bit of over all. I have three or so different compressors I use on the drum buss. and they change depending on the song. Same as most other instruments. Once there is a good balance in the mix, I then engage the summing, compressor and api eq and continue adjusting and mixing THROUGH everything while making changes in real time hearing my print back after conversion. As well as the two plugins on my Master. This sounds like a lot but really all of them are doing very very little work. I mean very little work. But the insert quality of each thing combined adds a certain texture that I haven't found on anything else in my 20 years doing it. Really happy with the results.
What a nice dog :)
Atticus says thanks
I've spotted him in other videos, it's so gorgeous
Engineers often talk about how good a low pass filter is. But what are the qualities they are listening for when using a Hi-pass filter and what makes them different to each other, for example a Passive Low Pass versus an SSL Low Pass?
Hmm people talk, at least in hardware, about passive hardware not effecting the phase/polarity.
@@Producelikeapro Yeh.this.
Weimaraners can absorb 40hz and below important room treatment.. funny that Marc glossed over the Antelope orion 32 HD that’s feeding the SSL Sigma summing mixer , that’s doing ..something. ; )
Analogue mix is so much better, its brighter, more depth, separation, 3D, dynamic, and most importantly it “Breaths” its “ Alive”, which is what ITB mixes often lack and sound claustrophobic and suffocating.
I wonder, which of your Hardware pieces actually adds the most dramatic improvements, if there is any one or two pieces that really make a huge jump. Is it the JCF? The Sigma? Teiglar? API???
Sounds great👍
With a different approach to the in the box version you could get similar or even better results then the out of box version so I am not sure I understand the point of the comparison😶 Great video btw as always thanks.
His percents go to eleven. Great stuff.
Haha indeed

"Just watch the screen"
The analog is completely different, besides the wider and deeper soundstage, the big , rounded sound it sounds more musical because the timing is more natural, every note sings, I use always analog summing the digital summing makes my body feel uncomfortable and my ears tends to shut down.
