Using CRUSHED GRANITE in LizK Succulent MASTER Soil Mix | GSwLK

  • The formulation for my Succulent MASTER Soil Mix is mainly based on "Decomposed Granite" for colouring and growing beautiful healthy succulents. The Decomposed Granite I use contains 93 different minerals that the succulents love. Since Decomposed Granite can be hard to come by... Would it be possible to use Crushed Granite instead and still have the same minerals that Decomposed Granite contains?
In this video, I'll show you how to use and process "Crushed Granite" as an alternative to Decomposed Granite so it can still be used for growing succulents.

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK after watching this video, I looked closely at the decomposed granite I ordered/bought from Home Depot and found out that there are not even chunks, big or small in the bag. It's mostly bigger than sand-like texture. Maybe I'll just use them in my garden as a ground cover. I also bought a few bags of DG from a Nursery which the owner uses them in potting succulents. He actually is pushing to use akadama though instead of DG.

Mrs. Liz, you and your channel are treasures. I've been bingeing your videos and, they're just fantastic. Thank you so, so much for sharing your knowledge with us! It turns out that if I want my succulents to survive, they need to be living indoors under a grow light. The porch they're on is only partially sunny, and when Spring comes, a tree is going to regain its leaves and shade them out entirely. I'd prune the thing if the landlord wouldn't evict me. Ah well, your wealth of knowledge makes the transition a LOT less scary!

For the area that you're in, there's still plenty of succulents that love that shade. But the chubby rosette ones most definitely need a grow light. There are some varieties that actually look better grown under the grow light. Happy growing.

I just made a new batch of soil, I pre-make it and keep it in giant buckets this way it's dry by the time I want to use it and I used up all of my granite that I've smashed all winter long. I realized I can't keep doing this by hand but thank you God in the heavens that there is a granite supply not 5 minutes from my home! I am definitely going to make it a point to go by there this week. I love that smashing up my rocks kept me busy all winter but it's so time-consuming and with my physical limitations my hands just can't take it anymore. thank you so so much for this video it is so helpful and informative!! I don't know what I would do without you Liz ❤️❤️❤️
Okay so I just finished the video. What do you use that really fine grit for because although I don't rinse mine, because I'm only smashing one Boulder at a time it really doesn't accumulate a lot of the dirt and dust but I do seiv the different particle sizes and I end up with a large grit sand that I was going to use for my outdoor sempervivum garden as one of the layers I'm going to lay down. I'm going to lay large 2-in gravel, the large grit sand and then my soil or actually maybe I should just mix it into the soil that I use for my Semps outside. I'll use that fine sand for some self-watering flower pots we have we usually just put fake flowers in them LOL but this is exactly what I've been doing all winter, minus the rinsing!!!! I usually get so excited when I get a good Boulder with a good amount of decomposed in it. Of course that's a lot harder to come across but I've been doing fine with it.

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

I also use the small grit into my soil mix but have to separate them for the purpose of using it as a top dressing for small pots. Have to pace myself out as I can't sieve too much as well without my hand going numb.

Zeolite absorb the moisture in away from roots but release it slowly to the plant when you water. Vermiculite will have water sitting on their surface all the time giving contact to the roots keeping it wet all the time causing root rot.

You can get small pieces that they use for chicks and larger for chickens. I've had good luck finding it in local farm supply stores. You just need to make sure it doesn't have probiotics on it. Does washing crushed granite help it not to harden in our succulent's pots or is it the addition of the other elements (coco peat, potting mix, compost) that make it not turn hard in a pot? I did find a source near me. I live in a subtropical area so finally avoid rot using 80% pumice to topsoil. I'd like to use crushed granite if it will not harden in my pots or in my succulents planted in the ground.

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

If you don't wash crushed granite, it will kill your succulents. The soil mixture will harden and act like a cement and block up the soil and the roots can't absorb water.

Zeolite will suck up the moisture in the soil. The bigger the surface area the more water it can hold so I'll use half the recommended amount.

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK , thank you so much Liz! I put sand on all my succulents. They’re not happy at all! 🥰💝

@@LiveLaughSmile I stay clear from sand or non porous material for my succulents. I had sandy mix on my first year of growing succulents and have a lot died on me.

Where can we get decomposed granite and zeolite pls? Thanks

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

Zeolite can be bought online or at hydroponics stores. Decomposed granite can be found in areas where there's existing granite(geological maps) and look at creeks nearby where the exiting granite would have weathered into.

Do you wash your decomposed granite, also?

No I don't Des. I just sieve them and the dust or small grits just fall off which I use in my garden.

Hi Liz, this may be the most stupid question but I saw this at woolworth...it says "100% natural and high quality non-clumping Attapulgite clay." can it be used for succulents? I am wondering because I saw someone using clay balls... www.chandlercatlitter.com.au/chandler-cat-litter

    • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK
      @GrowingSucculentswithLizK  Před 3 lety +1

Excellent question. Attapulgite is a magnesium aluminosilicate mineral with very high water "ABSORPTION" capacity(use for kitty litter). This is similar to ZEOLITE that's also use as Kitty Litter. Too much of it can be harmful to succulents. As far as clay balls is concern, I prefer to use the "KISS" method.
