I started hunting coyotes with a squeak toy, a few squirrel tails tied to a stick ( with a pull string attached) , and a bolt action .22lr. I killed 85 coyotes the first year I started hunting.

Just started into coyote hunting. I purchased a Savage .243 caliber bolt action rifle w scope. I hear that a .243 caliber is a good choice for coyote hunting. Great video!! Subscribed
@@boomcountryhydro Our market here is averaging about $100 and up to $150 on a real pretty pelt! Canada Goose is apparently going to start recycling their trims next year so this year they're buying everything up before they do that. Expecting the market to take a bit of a dip next year when that happens, but I'm sure another company will fill that void shortly after.
When I started varmint calling it was a .22 Mag Marlin Model 25MN, a hand call, and that is about it. My buddy started out with his Dad's 30-30 lever and a hand call. Keep it simple.

good video but not the most budget items I've used. Nearly any gun you have will work. I wouldn't go .22lr but any centerfire. A mouth call will call in coyotes well if you learn to use it. Learn to shoot seated and you don't need shooting sticks. Shooting sticks are better IMHO. They are lighter, cheaper, and nearly as stable as a bipod. They also work in rough terrain better and a coyote from a unexpected direction is easier to adjust shooting positions. I've seen people make their own with cut sticks and rubber from an inner tube.

I agree, in the video though I don’t necessarily advocate for the exact equipment I’m using like the rifle I have is one I happened to have which is why I use it- meaning go with what you got and not necessarily have to go and buy a new rifle specific for coyote. Electronic calls a lot easier to use I find than mouth calls and can get something that works that’s a little cheaper than the one I got here which I only picked up since it was on sale couldn’t pass up the deal lol
Good video, interesting. We don't get quite that cold here in Ky. When I started hunting years ago I did it alone, later in life I gained friends with knowledge and learned a lot.
Thanks for watching Ron! Yeah it gets deadly cold up here. It doesn't last for the full winter but there's always 2-3 weeks of absolute cold which is what we're having right now with the -40 sometimes gets to -50! I haven't gone out in the past week due to the deep freeze.
Thank you! The one I use is Vortex Razor 4000HD it was about $700 CAD might be cheaper down there in the States but its definitely great bang for your buck! I'm going to be doing a demo & review of this rangefinder in this same How To Hunt Coyote Series in the next week or two as well, but look up this rangefinder I would recommend it for sure!
Really good video. Coyote hunting is one of my favorite things to do. The weather is pretty hardcore up in your area. Looks like you have the gear for it though. I hunt in Arizona. Mostly Desert hunting. I will be following this series for sure.

Good job! I got the ico caller because it was inexpensive but in hindsight I should have spent a bit more for a caller that you can add different calls so it would be more adaptable to different game hunting like elk, moose... etc! I have a number of guns to use .223, 7.62x39, 25-06 all good coyote guns but the ammunition for 25-06 is expensive and ya 6.5 creed isn’t the cheapest ammunition either lol but yes very nice caliber.
Nice. I think as long as you have a few key calls you can get them pretty good. Like over 100 calls i don't think I've even browsed through them all yet let alone used them lol I use like 5-10 key calls pretty much. .223 is probably the most used calibre. I only use my 6.5 because I already have a stockpile of ammo for it from my other activities and I'm very comfortable with this rifle so buying a new gun just dedicated for coyote didn't make sense for me but if you've already got a .223 and other usable guns then that's good!
Thinking of using my .308 for coyotes also. Is it overkill? I reload so maybe i can choose what bullet to save some pelts as i want to sell it here in calgary
I literally just shot another one with my 308 this morning too, not overkill IMO, I am using 150 gr federal fusion causes more damage to pelt of course than a 22-250 but nothing a good taxidermist can’t stitch up lol

Absolutely man, go with what ya got! Dirt cheap these days they’re averaging about $25 here so hardly worth it but we do it for predator control for land owners too mostly. Used to be $150 each a couple years ago.
I got the caller for $350 on sale. I also mention there are other cheaper electronic callers u can get. Electronic would be better for beginners unless they want to practice with hand calls which takes time to get down but would end up a bit cheaper though.
@@OutdoorsAnonymous You can get an outdoor battery powered speaker with bluetooth for pretty cheap and then just use free downloaded sounds. These predator calls have hugely inflated prices because it's such a niche market, but there's no reason a speaker should cost that much
Thanks buddy glad you liked it! Here we're only allowed 1 yote per year on our regular hunting license with any used/unused big game tag - but with a Trappers License there is no bag limit. Another workaround the bag limit is if you're hunting on your private property and you have a special kill permit for defense of property but I'm not way too clear on how that one works as I'm in the city and don't need it w/ my trappers license anyway.

Nobody really traps here for living anymore, pretty much for fun and keeping the tradition going. Also, its hard for new trappers to get a trapline here as well, gotta wait for years before MNR assign you a trapline.

I have a bunch depending on what I need for a trip. I usually use my army issued pack cos it works well, also got a couple Eberlestocks. For longer hunts and where I will have to haul meat out I use the eberlestock JustOne.
Gee...I've killed THOUSANDS of coyotes and feral dogs with my Ruger M-77V in .243 Win. with a 4-12X45mm Redfield at my Doctors friend's ranch up in Osage County, OK! Neither me nor Dr. Dean have ANY of the shit you claim is necessary! I usually use his late Father's Model 52Winchester Rifle in .22 Swift (re-barreled by Cal-Tech 60 years ago) with a 16X-60mm Unterl in a recoiling mount and he uses his Sako .222 with a Nikkor 6X-40mm. The Swift VAPORIZES the head of feral dogs or coyotes, while the .222 kills cleanly out to 500 meters. The barrel of the Swift gets too hot if fired more than twice a minute and the tiny 45 grain bullets MELT IN THE BARREL and never reach 800 meters! My .243 shoots a 65 grain bullet to 750 meters to 1" on top of 54.3 grains of Norma MRP lit by a CCI large rifle MAGNUM primer. (Yes, I know, Norma powders are NLA, but I bought four 12 Kilo KEGS back in 1980!)

We're fetching between $100-$150 on coyotes up here in Manitoba right now its awesome! Of course that's for decent to good condition & skinned, fleshed, dried and formed. Though I can sell the full raw carcass for $50-$80 so it's not bad either.

You don't need a $1700 gun/scope combo. Get a low end .223, slap any Leupold/Vortex on it and get a hand call. You can easily do this under 800 Bucks

What did you mean when you said “settle for hand calls.”? I’ve called more dogs in with hand calls than my foxpro.
I just mean budget wise. Not that one is more or less effective than the other, but for someone starting out elec calls are easier to use that’s all.
