    Those package standby generators shouldn't be cold starting like that. They come equipped with block heaters that are designed to keep the block at operating temperature at all times. Poor maintenance means that the heaters aren't repaired when they fail, resulting in a cold start situation.

      100 - 120 Is sufficient for stand-by genset block heaters . They will start just fine as long as the fuel is not gelled from lack of additives .

    • @AnIdiotAboard_
      @AnIdiotAboard_ Před 5 měsíci +1

      60c? Starts Immediatly?
      Depends entirely on the application, here are a few examples broken down for ya.
      In a datacentre and hospitals, they are kept at full operating temperature, 80+C, and they can start and be at full load in under 10 seconds.
      In non-critical applications where power is needed but there's no need for instant load carry, they are kept at 60c and after starting will fast idle first before bringing the revs up, once the water temp rises to 80c it will go it generates power, this is fast standby and power will be available within 300 seconds
      In NONE critical applications, theres no preheating, and the engine will be programmed with a fast idle perform a pre-set warmup profile, in some cases they have additional heaters to speed this up, but they can take up 600 seconds for load carry.
      For us in the data center, it's all about instant load carry, generators are kept at full operating temperature, and all the water and oil are electrically pumped even after the start, so the generators can start, and just scream for the redline, it often takes longer to achieve a frequency sync than it does for the generator to start and be ready.
      It's well and good saying OH just preheat it, but that is a very very very expensive proposition, the heaters are in the TENS OF KILOWATTS range, and the whole thing is made of metal put in a basement that's freezing cold and sapping away heat constantly, last time i looked at our genset costs, pre-heating bills were in the £100,000 a year range

      Agree, but I think some of these clips were possibly shot in regions of depression where constant maintenance would over tax their finances. Basically, the gen sets are neglected simply due to the lack of money? A block heater would be a great help with all these cold weather units, but to keep the engine "warm" 24/7 just incase the lights go out is not a cheap hobby.

    There is no real excuse for all this drama. More maintenance is required or more knowledge of how diesel engine starting systems work. More heat fuel at the right time and enough of it. All this white smoke suggests lack of fuel probably caused by it running back. Hanging on the key is a lazy way of bleeding priming the system. Plus, a snif of either at the appropriate time would assist the engine to start.

When the power fails, the generator starts immediately. What do you think is going to happen, the engine suddenly goes from ~100 F to 0 in the 1/2 second it takes to begin starting?
