- Israel’s Iron Dome missile-defense system is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and mortars. It’s blocked thousands of missiles since 2011, including those launched by Hamas during this past weekend’s attack. The Palestinian militant group launched an estimated 3,500 rockets from Gaza.
WSJ explains how Israel’s Iron Dome works and has a 90% success rate.

The iron dome is an amazing piece of engineering, however The Katyusha rockets favored by Hamas and Hezbollah typically cost about $300 a round, while the Iron Dome's Tamir missiles cost anywhere from $40,000 to $50,000 each according to a researcher at Israel's Institute for National Security Studies.
Ya well that $300 dollar rockets can do tens of thousands more in damage then the missiles cost to intercept. So its a fair trade
Protecting human life comes at a cost big head
How valuable are the targets that would be destroyed by the rockets, though? Assuming the rockets hit a tank worth 6 million, the $50k spent on a missile to intercept the rocket is worth it. Moreover, once a rocket is fired, the location of firing is known and the source can be destroyed. So you don't exactly have an infinite drain on military budget, sinking $50k for every $300 spent by Hamas, IF you're reacting quickly and taking down the rocket launchers.
Hmm Israel has 10 iron dome batteries, each battery consists of 3-4 launcher with 20 missiles each (80 max per battery). Total rockets required to destroy a battery need to be 80++, let's say 100 (5% success rate). By raining a 1000 rockets, Israel will no longer have iron dome left. Every rocket shot after would devastate airports or military structures.
like someone else said, you have to consider the damage the missile does on impact, as well as human lives saved. 50k is insanely cheap and a technological marvel, for an interceptor like that
Imagine how devastating this last attack would be without the dome
Yes, and think ab out how many Ukrainians have lost their life due to this dictators selfishness... We funded the development and implementation, give it to Ukraine.

They intercept low tier rockets launched by a bunch of terrorists in a strip of land that has access to barely any resources. No wonder they'll have such a high accuracy. It's not like they are getting really tested by another highly militarized state.

So it’s literally the same thing as a patriot missile system except there’s smaller missiles and instead of carrying tutor for missile, they carry a lot more smaller missiles
One of Reagan's legacies. He was mocked and laughed at for proposing it .. "Star Wars"...
Yes but all of that's significantly ramps up the complexity of the system. Smaller and more targets requires more sophisticated radars. More interceptors means more processing power required to calculate flight data. Large amount of batteries and spread out systems means that there needs to be communication between the systems that needs to be secured and reliable. Iron Dome batteries are constantly on the move to prevent getting attacked so they also need to be mobile and easy to pack everything up and go
no it's not the same. Patriot can go much higher and faster to take out ballistic missiles, and PAC-3 uses a kinetic kill vehicle. Think of iron dome like a handgun, and patriot like a rifle, and THAAD like a cannon. They each have their own special uses
The principal is the same, the application is quite different. The devil is in the details and the two systems are unlikely to share any components.
The Israelis took the patriot missile system and renamed it with few tweaks here and there.
I went to Israel in 2010. I was shocked by the high level of security Israel had 13 years ago. how did it fail to prevent this is confusing. My heart goes out to every innocent victim in this conflict. as people, we are to do better.
please stop 👉 FAILED would be THOUSANDS DEAD...
Not hundreds 🤔 ...
Almost like the propaganda they served you was false, after all...
WEIRD!
Some people speculate that this ignorance was intentional for something, others say that Israel wasn't prepared for such an event and/or expected a different type of attack. As for some missiles that hit Israel, that was probably because Hamas sent an overwhelming amount of missiles for the Iron dome to handle.
Im still shook too, with all the security how can the hamas attack si easily like that n take over some village too ..how cn that happen
@@castanza128someone gets it
It would appear that if you can rapidly fire enough missiles in a short period of time, the iron dome isn't so iron. It has limitations that are deadly.
better than what Gaza got I guess lol
Iirc Israel has other ground based missile defense systems as well, not just the Iron Dome.
Imagine you just enjoying a quiet day in the countryside and then get exploded by a rocket because the dome considered that area "unoccupied"
I guess that depends on how many iron dome missile launchers they have.
@gabeskyler6068 but like the comment below mine says, it's economics. Keep over loafing the system with cheap missles till they run out of money to defend them. But that's not Isreal problem now. America will now step in and print money to pay for it.
The Iron Dome is definitely impressive and outstanding.
BUT it would be EVEN more impressive if it could NOT only passively neutralised incoming rockets but fire a secondary rocket from above using calculated trajectory to source of launch thus making it a passive aggressive weapon shield. 👍🏻
That's overloading. Better have something being great at 1 task than something just ok at 2.
And besides, you dont want to start a war by automatically shooting back at a country that misfired or had a rocket defect.
@@aomafura3374
Perhaps a numerical threshold of rockets being set in motion to target in current context could be used to determine if it was intentional or simply an accident.
I believe such a passive/aggressive weapons technology is plausible today especially with the advent of Artificial Intelligence to make it great at achieving 2 objectives with just one Iron dome missile and greatly reducing cost.
And why again did it fail?
Israel is actually kinda doing what you mentioned. As soon as the radar detects that a rocket is fired, Israel pinpoints from where it was fired in the Gaza strip and minutes or even seconds later airstrikes the very area.
Yeah good luck, 😂😂😂😂
Didn't Israel also have a system that can detect and locate where the enemy missile was launched and send a retaliatory missile back to cancel out the aggressors?
No you're thinking of an Uno Reverse Card and they haven't pulled any yet I believe.
I wonder how they could work around the issue of $500 rocket vs. $50,000 missile? I also read that at times two missiles were launched to intercept one rocket 🤔
Mass production at machinization of production lines
$50k to save a $2m building and 200 lives? Worth it
Money isn’t everything, my friend.
Eventually yes. But, the price will not go down so low as $500. The expensive parts are the chips, software and and other modern parts. It will be very difficult to streamline build all the parts as different components come from different plants. The rockets of the other side is not really $500. It is interpreted as $500 but actual price is more than that if we equate labor in the West is the same as the rest of the world.
We already did, a Lazer solution called iron beam, it's just hadn't reached full production yet.
But it'll cost about only 3 $ to take down a rocket
that may also be the reason why the US was hesitant to give hi tech weaponries to Ukraine because it might also fall to the wrong hands and reverse engineered.
pretty sure if you have enough money you could get these high tech weapons theye arent that exclusive
Ukraine is still one of the most corrupt countries in the world. His concern is definitely valid.

I mean, it wasn't gonna take rocket scientist to work out, if you have 10 missile batteries and each of those can take out 20 incoming projectiles, then you can only realistically target 200 at any given time, if your throwing 1000 missiles in that direction, alot of them are gonna get through, another thing to remember is the iron dome is 90% effective, what people forget is that, that's 90% effective against the selected incoming targets, remember it can target and doesn't target more then it can actually shoot down, so when you hear 90% effective, that's 90% effective against those it selected, the vast majority of missiles get though without even being selected by system
They don't get selected because they are aren't going for anything too important
I have always wondered, doesn't a bunch of stuff come raining down from the sky from the destroyed missiles? Yes, I am aware that is much better than the alternative. I am still curious about this.
Yes. thats why they try to intercept the rocket as soon as they can. Other wise there can be debris that falls. This is why when there is an siren people are told stay in the bomb shelter for 10 minutes.

"You're welcome for the Iron Dome." - U.S. Taxpayer
Need an energy / laser weapon. It's pretty clear now that cheap "missiles" can overwhelm any defense system.
Honest question: why doesn't the enemy just increase the rate of rockets fired to overwhelm the maximum block rate of the interceptor. In other words, don't fire a few rockets at a time (just to have them intercepted), fire like 1,000 rockets at once. There's no way the interceptor can block all of them.
I'd guess it is to cause interceptor expenditure more than anything. Hella expensive to take down 1 missile. Once interceptor supply is low, determined however, then overwhelm.
Hamas fired more than 3000 rockets in one DAY, and truly, the settlements around Gaza were left without any domes, and eventually, many rockets crashed into homes, thus leading to thousands of injuries of helpless civilians
it's more complicated than that. It's easy to hide 5 rockets, it's hard to hide 3000...

The Israel-palestine conflict is NOT COMPLICATED!
The Israeli Perspective:
From the Israeli perspective, the State of Israel was established in 1948 as a homeland for the Jewish people, following centuries of persecution and the Holocaust. Israelis argue that they have a legitimate right to self-determination and a secure state to protect the Jewish people. They believe that their historical and religious connection to the land of Israel, dating back thousands of years, justifies their presence and control over the territory. Israelis also contend that they have made numerous concessions for peace and have repeatedly expressed a willingness to negotiate a two-state solution.
The Palestinian Perspective:
From the Palestinian perspective, they argue that they are the indigenous people of the land and that they have historically lived in the region for centuries. Palestinians assert that they have been subjected to occupation, discrimination, and human rights abuses as a result of Israeli policies. They seek self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. Palestinians also argue that Israeli settlements built in the occupied territories are illegal under international law and hinder the establishment of a viable Palestinian state.
Palestinians have the right to defend their land, and they have so for the past 50 years. I stand with Palestinians even when the US is blind because of the power of those we can't speak against.(You know who they are)
