  • Hey guys! I remember before I moved to Madrid, I was FREAKING OUT that I was not going to be able to live off of the auxiliar de conversación salary. I would have loved to see a video like this to really put into perspective how much everything costs in Madrid.
Coming from the United States, we really do not have a good idea of how much life costs in other parts of the world. Unfortunately, this causes us to overpay for things like rent, especially when we are so stressed looking for a place to live when we first arrive. So I don't want you to do that!!!
Hope this video helps you guys out and please let me know if it did in the comments! Also comment below what types of videos you would like to see more of :) OS PROMETO que voy a hacer más videos en español MUYYY PRONTO
follow me on insta: / raquelannee
    collabs: contactrachelanne@gmail.com
(I made an editing mistake and put the insta plug in a really weird spot LOL my bad)
also I am now aware that Toledo is NOT in the comunidad de madrid and i am tonta pls forgive me

If you are looking for a second opinion, as a guy that has lived in Madrid almost all his whole life, you can live off of 1000€, it is possible, don't expect any luxurys though, you are going to be pretty money tight but you are not going to die or be homeless, and going out every single day to bars or similar things would destroy your budget. As our nice host says it's better to look for additional income and being a native speaker can make wonders. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the country if your not trying to live forever here

13:48 "anyone can survive off this amount living in Madrid". The operative word here is "survive". I hope everybody realises that "having an amazing time in Madrid" 13:58 and surviving are two completely different experiences. Yes indeedy, you sure can have an amazing time in Madrid, one of the most vibrant cosmopolitan cities in Europe, but you´re gonna need a lot more than 1000 euros...

100% agree. It reminds me to a comment I saw in a different video (and different youtuber) talking about how much she wanted to live in Spain (being from Ireland) I was like "no, seriously, you want to spend your holidays here and surely you think our everyday life is like your holidays, but not at all. Provinces you can look at too near Madrid: Guadalajara is a provincia that connects with Madrid by train, just in case you would like to see more options. Toledo is also near, the northest part, but there's only buses to Madrid from there, so it takes longer and there are less. There're also Avila and Soria, but forget about them if you have to go to Madrid everyday 😅

I do it in my free time and it is only some extra pocket money, so I am quite cheap, in another hand, the cheaper you are, the more student you get. If you can't afford your own apartment or even a small studio with 1.000 euros, then 1.000 aren't enough for being an *independent* adult. At the bare minimum you depend on your room mates for paying they share of the rent, and that's without even considering that whatever decision you want to make about the house or schedules or parties or whatever you have to first agree with your room mates. You can still say "oh, but I don't care about parties or schedules or house's furnitures or house's decisions" and that's perfect, that only means that you don't care about being an *independent* free adult.
Is like if I say: You can live without money in New York if you don't care to sleep in the street and to eat food from the garbage or ask for food in local restaurants when they are closing and ask for money to people around the street.

I agree that it is unfair, especially for people who have been working for multiple years. But thankfully, 1000 euros can get you by in Spain and you can live off of it :) versus in the US, unfortunately you would not be able to survive with $1000 or $1200

christine cleavest true!! But some problems aren’t as well paid, for example BEDA is 24 hrs a week earning approx 1050€ :( plus planning time, waiting during breaks, etc so it adds up to 35 hrs atleast in the school (in my case). but working for the ministry, it is a great salary in terms of hours:pay. Maybe I’ll do a video explaining these differences!

@@RachelAnne_ I do 24 hours with BEDA ;) after taxes and deductions it's about 1109, the tax return is a nice if small bonus. Lol!
I also live in studio by myself for less than 500, it's less 10 minutes (25 if I walk) outside of the center. I found my place on mil anuncios, a site that is often overlooked. Madrid is definitely more expensive than other cities but as you mentioned depending on your lifestyle and how you manage your resources it is doable and you can enjoy.

Overall the video was great except... 1.000€ is not a good salary anywhere in Spain, in fact, the legal minimun wage in 2021 for a full time job (8 hours) is 950€ (gross, you have to tske social security and other taxes from that amount) a month (on 14 payments a year, 12 months and two extra payments, usually june and december)... so those 1.000€ is basically the lowest amount they can pay you for a full time job.

Hi Rachel, I think the way you put it is quite misleading. 1k/month may work for a while for students and young people, but it is NOT considered a good salary in Spain, it is in fact the legal minimum. Unfortunately, there are many people who earn that or less, but I doubt that they are very happy with their economy.

    • @RachelAnne_
      @RachelAnne_  Před rokem +2

Hi! I never said 1k is a good salary. This video is directed towards people wanting to be auxiliares de conversaciones for a limited time here in Spain. It’s to help them understand the difference between 1k a month in Spain and 1k a month in the US, which would be absolutely impossible to live off for any amount of time, vs in Spain is unsustainable for the long term, which I highlighted in the video, but it IS possible with a certain, non-luxury permitting lifestyle.
