The Airgun Show - rat shooting with hollow-point ammo, PLUS how to make your airgun more accurate…

- We join Mat Manning on a night-time rat hunt and he’s making a change from his usual ammo choice. Although he is usually an advocate of domed pellets for all forms of airgun hunting, Mat is giving hollow-points a try on the farmyard rats to see if they can deliver the clean kills he demands.
Everyone wants to hit more targets so, in the second part of this week’s show, Mat is sharing a few tips to help you shoot more accurately. These seemingly simple changes to your setup and technique may not seem like much but they can make a big difference to precision when you add them all together.

Have tried these pellets too and found them to be accurate out to 25 yards max with my sub 12 ft lb Weihrauch bullpup. Biggest thing for me was the fact that there was very little thrashing around which I can only put down to more damage being caused by the head design of the pellet. Well worth a try.
Hi Ian.
My HW100 also likes them so I'm not surprised that you're getting good results with the Weihrauch.
All the best. Mat
Thanks Mat,
another great vid. I agree with your preference of domed pellets. I have found that most modern pellets are made from hard lead alloy and easily pass through soft pests like rats.
Yes, accuracy has to come first. Hit them in the brain and they won't go very far.
All the best. Mat
Fantastic...far more conclusive "lights out" than domed pellets.Have tested in gel, clay and soap and they really expand far more than any other hollow points(practically double).Maybe feral pigeons next?
Top shooting as always Matt. Thanks for the advice on accuracy, as a new shooter the tips are golden , cheers
Thanks Ray. Glad to help.
All the best. Mat
I have used the Polymags and Metalmags for years, biggest difference seems to be the do not go straight through the rabbits. Another great vid. Cheers
Got to say Matt, they seem to lay down well after those pellets. And I also prefer a dome shape.
Been watching all the series over lock down and really enjoy your skill and input, Thank you.
Thanks for watching.
All the best. Mat
The rats don’t seem to have as much after pellet strike movement and kicking as I see in other videos.
Again a great video, glad you mentioned about follow through on the trigger, I see it to often people snatching at shots & releasing instantly. Awesome
Trigger control is a really big deal. People who use shotguns (myself included) need to try extra hard to remember finesse when using rifles.
All the best. Mat
Absolutely excellent accuracy advice mate. I've been handling air guns since 1980. My first was a Daisy 840.
Superb video. Great shooting and some very valuable information. Never seen so many on off switch kills. I think I only seen 1 rat do the death dance. One of the best shooting vids I have seen
Thanks very much Roy. That ammo certainly does the job if you put it in the right place.
All the best. Mat
Great information , I feel comfortable shooting out to 50 yards with my $300 U.S. pcp reg gun. If you want more distance 22lr. I’ve found that a pellet has to be moving @ 700 fps for minimal expansion at impact range. For rat sized pests < 20 yards I use beeman WC 7.8 still sailing @ 850+ @ 20 yards and less than $6 dollars for a tin of 500. Poly mags are a little pricey IMO for rats. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Laverne. Some really interesting facts and figures there.
All the best. Mat
Morning Mat, yet another great session, glad to see that you gave the Polymags a try, I've been using them for a couple of years now through my Air Arms S510 .177 calibre on both rats and woodies with excellent results, perfect kills from 10 to 35 yards, I put them on an equal par with the JSB Hades Diablo .177 . Stay safe and clean mate and keep up the great vids.
Barry.
Hi Barry,
Sounds like you're doing very well with them.
Thanks for watching. Mat
I use H&N baracuda hunter extreme, excellent pellets they deform better than most hollow points. Love their field target trophey pellets for plinking
Another really informative video, thanks for sharing your knowledge Matt, keep up the good work.
Thanks Paul. Glad you enjoyed it.
All the best. Mat
Great video matt! Like you I'm not a fan of 'fancy' pellets but it was interesting to see those rats barely had a twitch left in them! 👍
No flopping-about, so it this ammo is doing the job humanely
The rats are not jumping around after the fatal shock to the head. Good ammo and shot placement.
My Regal HR will shoot polymag shorts easily as accurately as it's fave AADF .177 up to 35 yards and they definitely expand more, so i'm a big fan 👍 they don't do so well in my R10 though. Great vid Mat!
That is great going - your guns obviously really like them.
Thanks for watching. Mat
My ultimate sporter didn't get on with polymag shorts, I found a slightly heavier pellet more effective. 👍
Wow....they lie like a pancake. Not much moving after they get hit. The predators are really devastating inside! Brilliant mate!
Could you go hunting with the crosman 1377 please with a shoulder stock and a scope on it
Spot on shooting there Matt!
Thanks Kevin.
All the best. Mat
Wow, this is very good accuracy 👍👍👍ATM night Vision..what really friends..FX IMPACT
All your output is highly informative and a pleasure to watch. This video is particularly good and as I was about to try some JSB “Hades” pellets in (.177) I have just heard about, it is very timely.
Hi Walter.
I have also heard good things about Hades pellets. Obviously, different ammo will give different results with different guns.
Good luck. Mat
Hi matt I'm a pest controller and use bisley pest control hollow points with great effect when clearing farms for commercial purposes with my Scorpion.
Hi Craig,
I used to use them a lot in the early 90s and found them to be very good as long as I didn't push the range too far.
All the best. Mat
Accuracy is king ,hit a rat in the head with any type of pellet it dead, find a pellet that is accurate consistently in your chosen rifle and stick with it ,😁👍
Great show and good advice, Mat. 👍
Bolting a old cut down wardrobe door to one of those folding saw horses worked for me, its self levelling and ridged in every direction, also fitted a bi-pod, stringed up some cans at 20 meters and the game is to shoot the strings (not the cans), got the idea from the good, the bad and the ugly.
The old air tank is getting low, no refills until march?
Hi Matt after watching some of your videos on squirrel feeders I went a head and built one and there coming in well. I recently shot six in about 15 minuets.
Hi Hector.
That's great to hear. They really do come piling in when they're on the feed.
Keep up the good work. Mat
Great shooting , and some superb tips ... fantastic shooting Mat , my mrs says your looking as good as ever ..
Thanks Mark, and thanks Mark's wife...
Cheers. Mat
Hi Matt
I use poly mags in my Uragan compact 177, they are very accurate .
Every bit as good as Air Arms field Diablo . Again I use them only up to 25 m
.The rats go to sleep straight away 👍
Sounds like they're working well for you, Gary.
Thanks for watching. Mat
What brand(s) of airgun do any of you in here recommend? Are they still CO2 or pump powered? If CO2, are they very much improved from when I was a kid in the '70s/'80s? Are there different power sources today than pump or CO2?
Thanks in advance!
Great video and nice shooting and good advice
Do they make a semiautomatic air gun these days? I grew up shooting Crossman, Benjamin, Sheridan pump powered, bolt action single shot.
One of my best shoots is a pig farm. I have shoot Thousands of RATS on there. I have used loads of pellets over the years. Crossman Premier Domed Pointed hollow point all work well in most barrels. BSA Hollow point work well. RWS super domes work well in most barrals. But I do like the massive POP Hollow points make on impact. I can`t stand all the Jimmicky pellets out there. I like the Crossman Premier hollow points. there finish is is like there polished they are very accurate and look like tracers when shooting with a lamp or night vision.
Great tips and a great night on the rats
👍 👍 👍 😜 🏴 🦄 🎣 😁 🤞 ✌️
Thank you for your professional tips Mat. Cheers 🇦🇺
Thanks Tyrone. Glad to help.
All the best. Mat
Great video and tips. Thank you
My cheap crosman hollow points fly pretty dam good but my springer has 20fpe
Good shooting enjoyed the video. RAWDOG FROM OHIO
I've found controlling my breathing at release helps. I breathe in and out, watch the aim point climb and sink and hold my breath half way and SQUEEZE the trigger, not pull it
Thank you Mat.
Thanks for watching, Henry.
All the best. Mat
so true quality mounts are often overlooked .my scopes are the blackhound 4x14 mil. best ive ever used !
Matt, I have to ask, what do you prefer out of the impact mk2 and the Daystate delta wolf
That is a great question and I haven't used the Delta Wolf enough to call it yet. A lot of shooters are probably going to be skeptical about the electronics on the DW but it should make a huge difference in terms of quick tuning.
Cheers. Mat
Excellent film, thankyou👍
Nice session on the rats Mat. 👍
One observation is if you add an inverted butt-hook (that rests on your shoulder) like I recently acquired from JB3D, then you won't have to swap hands to cock the Impact, as your shoulder takes the weight. 🤷🏻♂️
Your rats look a bit porky BTW, I'm obviously still the only CZcamsr correcting the Pard's raw recorded 16:9 (stretched) footage back to 4:3; nice to see the reticle is symmetrical again then too. 👍
Cheers. Russ
Thanks Russ. That butt hook would certainly help.
All the best. Mat
Great video again Matt...Tried the pellets and over 20 m they were okay...
Hi Kris. Glad you are getting decent results with them.
All the best. Mat
Usual excellent stuff Mat. Pete in Essex.
Thanks Pete.
Hope all is well.
Cheers. Mat
You are the best Mat! 🙌
Those Polly's hit hard I'm going to have to try them
They are very good. I still really like domed pellets but these are the best of the bunch as far as hollow-points go, in my opinion.
All the best. Mat
thanks soo much. the barrel cleaning suggestion i am hoping will solve my accuracy problem
Superb!
I almost forgot to come back here to my PC to give this one a Thumbs Up. ( I watched this video on my main TV with ROKU / CZcams first :)
I do enjoy accurate shooting, makes for humane dispatching of these and all, pests doesn't it?
Thanks Pete - much appreciated.
All the best. Mat
You should try RWS super H point super accurate and still alot of punch even at 50yrds with my sub 12 s510tdr
Good day, mate.... I wish to purchase Ridgeline gear jacket EXT ... I can’t fine them stateside.
Hi Tom. Let me see what I can find out for you - not sure if they have a stateside distributor.
All the best. Mat
Hard to justify the high cost or predator polymags.
Domed pellets have never let me down in a pest control situation.
Certainly no point from moving away from ammo that is working for you. I wanted to show Polymags to demonstrate what they are capable of but domed pellets will still be the first choice for most of my shooting.
All the best. Mat
Would you consider having a novice on your channel? it would maybe help those who haven't shot before or have recently bought an air rifle understand some of the challenges and enjoyment that come with entering the sport.
Hi Will.
We were all novices once, and we do our best to help shooters to overcome the hurdles that we encountered when we started out. More than happy to try to address any specific questions.
All the best. Mat
What is your impression of the Hatsan Hydra changeable barrel 177, 22, 25 cal pellet rifle? I know it is not quite as costly as the beautiful models you use but is it decent shooting for the money?
Hi Walter.
Afraid I have not had a chance to use it yet.
All the best. Mat
These pellets need about 13ft.lbs of impact energy to show what they could do. Find an FAC gun to shoot them around 900ft/s and what h the results. Those who shoot these in .22 @ 550ft/s are really wasting their money. At that MV they offer no advantage over the domed pellet. Great shooting BTW.
At sub 12 the hollow points don't expand unless the pellets are made of playdoh same as Jsb hades don't expand in a sub 12
That is pretty much my feeling but, in our tests on ballistic gel, the Polymags dis make a much larger wound channel than other similar ammo - probably because of their shape.
All the best. Mat
I use the polymag shorts in my hw110 they're devastating to the rats I've never looked back.
Yes, my HW100 also shoots them very accurately.
All the best. Mat
Whats your thoughts on that Ridgeline jacket? They used to struggle with breathing leaving you sweating - Im looking at the smock version in the same camo pattern
Hi Giles.
I have been wearing the Grizzly 3 Jacket for most of my airgun shooting this winter and it is excellent. Of course there is better out there at a higher price point but I think it takes some beating for the money.
All the best. Mat
You're taking headshots with a .34mm airgun. Does hollowpoint really make a difference?
No great difference in my opinion, but these do create a bigger wound channel than the competition when tested on ballistic putty. They are more accurate than most hollow-points in my opinion, so are a good option for shooters who insist on using them.
All the best. Mat
Great Video Thanks 😊
Nice vid...yet again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lovely stuff as usual!👍😁
What gun is that
FX Impact MK2 in first section and FX Dreamline Classic in second.
All the best. Mat
FX impact in FAC, what everyone shoots.
Yes, I also have one is FAC and it's great.
All the best. Mat
Random one Matt, what gloves are they?
I wear MacWet gloves for most of my shooting. The mesh version in the summer and the warmer ones in the winter - usually.
Thanks for watching. Mat
Great video. Can I ask why you had to swap hands to reload each time? Its not a criticism! Just an observation that’s all. Keep up the great work!
Hi Keiron.
I hadn't noticed that. Looking back over it, I'm not swapping hands but shifting my leading hand from the rest to the gun to keep is steady while I let go of the pistol grip to work the lever with my trigger hand.
All the best. Mat
Can I ask what rifle and scope you used for the Rat eradication,
Is using a red light for ratting any good?
Certainly whacked them tonight, good shooting 🐀🤪🐀🥴👏
May I know the Make and model of your Airgun please?
Is this the gun you are using in the Video ? FX AIR RIFLES - FX IMPACT MK2 , What Pellets ? What Scope ? I am in Northern California and we have more rats than ever before . I have a Sheraton now and I have had it since I was 14 . I am 65 now and too old to pump it up all of the time. LOL Thanks
Someone please tell me where can I buy this rrifle.
hello. thanks sir
Want kind of air gun is that
those pellets are devastating !
Can't you clamp your stock to your shoulder and the tripod, and reload with your trigger hand? edit: you are doing something like that later in the vid.
