The Airgun Show - rat shooting with hollow-point ammo, PLUS how to make your airgun more accurate…

  • We join Mat Manning on a night-time rat hunt and he’s making a change from his usual ammo choice. Although he is usually an advocate of domed pellets for all forms of airgun hunting, Mat is giving hollow-points a try on the farmyard rats to see if they can deliver the clean kills he demands.
    Everyone wants to hit more targets so, in the second part of this week’s show, Mat is sharing a few tips to help you shoot more accurately. These seemingly simple changes to your setup and technique may not seem like much but they can make a big difference to precision when you add them all together.

    Have tried these pellets too and found them to be accurate out to 25 yards max with my sub 12 ft lb Weihrauch bullpup. Biggest thing for me was the fact that there was very little thrashing around which I can only put down to more damage being caused by the head design of the pellet. Well worth a try.

      @theshootingshow  Před 3 lety +4

      Hi Ian.
      My HW100 also likes them so I'm not surprised that you're getting good results with the Weihrauch.
      All the best. Mat

  • @airgunshootingandoutdoorch4260

    Thanks Mat,
    another great vid. I agree with your preference of domed pellets. I have found that most modern pellets are made from hard lead alloy and easily pass through soft pests like rats.

    • @theshootingshow
      @theshootingshow  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes, accuracy has to come first. Hit them in the brain and they won't go very far.

    Fantastic...far more conclusive "lights out" than domed pellets.Have tested in gel,clay and soap and they really expand far more than any other hollow points(practically double).Maybe feral pigeons next?

    Great information , I feel comfortable shooting out to 50 yards with my $300 U.S. pcp reg gun. If you want more distance 22lr. I’ve found that a pellet has to be moving @ 700 fps for minimal expansion at impact range. For rat sized pests < 20 yards I use beeman WC 7.8 still sailing @ 850+ @ 20 yards and less than $6 dollars for a tin of 500. Poly mags are a little pricey IMO for rats. Thanks for the video.

    Bolting a old cut down wardrobe door to one of those folding saw horses worked for me, its self levelling and ridged in every direction, also fitted a bi-pod, stringed up some cans at 20 meters and the game is to shoot the strings (not the cans), got the idea from the good, the bad and the ugly.

    One of my best shoots is a pig farm. I have shoot Thousands of RATS on there. I have used loads of pellets over the years. Crossman Premier Domed Pointed hollow point all work well in most barrels. BSA Hollow point work well. RWS super domes work well in most barrals. But I do like the massive POP Hollow points make on impact. I can`t stand all the Jimmicky pellets out there. I like the Crossman Premier hollow points. there finish is is like there polished they are very accurate and look like tracers when shooting with a lamp or night vision.

    One observation is if you add an inverted butt-hook (that rests on your shoulder) like I recently acquired from JB3D, then you won't have to swap hands to cock the Impact, as your shoulder takes the weight. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Your rats look a bit porky BTW, I'm obviously still the only CZcamsr correcting the Pard's raw recorded 16:9 (stretched) footage back to 4:3; nice to see the reticle is symmetrical again then too. 👍

    These pellets need about 13ft.lbs of impact energy to show what they could do. Find an FAC gun to shoot them around 900ft/s and what h the results. Those who shoot these in .22 @ 550ft/s are really wasting their money. At that MV they offer no advantage over the domed pellet. Great shooting BTW.
