- Thanks for watching this video. Hope you enjoyed it! I'm Viki, a Hungarian making videos about Hungary in English.
Come grocery shopping with me in a central Budapest supermarket. I’ll show you around the supermarket and then I take my grocery haul home and show you all the prices and the grand total.

Do you think what I bought was good value?
Very help full ❤❤❤
The loose goods are comparable in price to the UK, but the non-perishables were very expensive. I don't pay more than £1 for a jar of pasta sauce (same size). You can get more expensive ones, but £4 would be considered a very luxury price. The bread was also expensive. I pay £1.15 for an up-market loaf. You could get cheap bread for 50p.
I suppose a lot depends on where you shop, but overall it seems that Hungary is expensive, which is surprising given the lower average salary there.
By the way, I enjoy your channel and hope that you continue making videos.
Yeah, one of the big issues here is that the food also has the full VAT price of 27% added on to almost all food products.
@@creativestudios3d Apart from the VAT, do you know why food is so expensive? Is it simply that labour costs are now a small part of food production so low salaries don't have much effect?
@ChefEarthenware I'm glad you're enjoying the videos!
Yes, it's quite sad really how expensive some things are when you look at the salaries. That pasta sauce is definitely not a luxury item, maybe mid-range, if that. I've seen it sold for £2.50 at the Co-op in the UK, but I think it's closer to €1 in Italy.
lovely vedos
Love your videos. Yes leave a video on your cooking. My parents were born hungarians. Both born in Cegled. They both left in 1956 both ended up living in London. They met there. I was born in London. I was brought up eating hungarian food. To me its the best cuisine I ever tasted. I dont have my parents anymore. Their cooking was amazing. I went to Budapest in April 2023 for 6 days. I wish I stayed another week. Budapest is so beautiful. I want to go back again next April. Thank you for your videos
Thank you so much! I’m glad you’re enjoying my videos. Stay tuned and
I will be posting some more videos of Hungarian cooking. I hope you do get to go back to Hungary next spring!🤞
Not expensive as such, but considering Hungarian wages, it's extremely expensive.
Yes, I think food prices are especially high in Hungary at the moment!😢
Well that’s why expats move to Hungary, Hungarians can move to the USA or another other country if they want to make more money. Everyone is exploiting something no matter who you are. If you’re poor you will exploit another country for their jobs and if you’re an expat you will exploit a country because it’s cheaper for you to live in. That’s just the world we live in it’s not changing anytime soon
drágán vásároltál, ha körbe nézel az üzletekben és piacon olcsóbban megúszod, de az időigényes és mint tudjuk az idő is pénz
Hát ez igaz, a piac tényleg olcsóbb és manapság az idő tényleg pénz!
I Like your video❤❤
Talán a CBA Príma drágább. De mindenképpen szeretnék majd egy videót csinálni egy bevásádlásról az Aldiban és a Lidl-ben is.
Would you recommand good place to buy fruits and vegetables in Budapest? Is the market hall?
Looking at your shop I was thinking around £50 so very much on par with the UK but our food is VAT free so that makes a big difference. Your fresh fruit and veg looks far better than ours and the butchery and deli looked far more varied. Cadburys choclate was never great but since Kraft took them over, it's awful. As you're probably aware, Spar in the UK is a convenience store but a very welcome sight in some small Welsh town when you're on a bikepacking trip and need a calorie fix.
Yes, a lot fruit and veg are nicer in Hungary, but then there is more sun here! I've noticed that lots of imported brands have got very expensive recently, partially due to the forint having weakened.
Hi Viki 🙂 Thank u so much for all the video lessons you are an amazing teacher/mentor! I was wondering how would I find this store? What is the address and how do I find the ramp to enter Spar? Thank u again!!
Aw, thanks so much!
The official address is Budapest, Nyugati tér 1-2, 1066. It’s sort of opposite Nyugati Railway Station (underneath the building containing the Libri bookshop and Decathlon).
At some Spar markets in Austria there are machines for fresh orange juice
🤩
What are the main supermarket chains in Austria?
@@thisishungary Spar and Billa are the main markets which are all over Austria in almost every village. Then there are Hofer, Lidl and Penny in the larger cities.
The spar in this video now has a fresh orange juicing machine. Maybe someone there watched this video?
I like to shop at Tesco very much when I am in Hungary.
Yeah, I quite like Tesco, too. But I seem to have favourite products in most supermarkets. 😀
Yes, me too!
Hi nice video comparing israel and india bit higher in Hungary. Waiting for cooking video too thank you my self Raju from india 😊
Chio chips in 🇭🇺 the chips are from Romania 🇷🇴 and I am from Romania
You bought a lot for that amount. In Canada that would’ve probably cost about $150. I think you said $68, so pretty much double. I loved seeing how their grocery stores are set up and what kinds of things you have.
Én is mindig nagyon érdekesnek találom, hogy más országokban hogy néz ki egy szupermarket!😁
The prices are quite comparable to my city in US.
Viki prices from your shopping trip not that far off from US prices which are slightly lower. Are food prices higher in Budapest than Gyor or smaller cities?
Well, I guess the same supermarket chain would most likely have the same prices all over the country. There might be some regional variation, but unfortunately, as far as I know Hungary has had the sharpest food price increase in the EU in the last year or so and salaries don’t reflect the change. 😢
Prices at markets are usually cheaper, but there aren't any fruit and veg markets in the very centre of Budapest any more.
I think dairy milk is a chocolate of the highest quality, but I don't think it should be that expensive.
😅 Yes, you could get four for that much money in the UK!
Ucuz değil (Nem olcso).
Hát igen, szerintem sem. 😢
This price ,every mouth 23.563?
Totally price?
What's a price cap?
The government set the maximum price at which certain foods could be sold in Hungary.
