    Not getting caught up in my own feelings is so difficult to do...I get so angry with some kids and it is so challenging to just park that and deal with the student.

    I've found humor can be a great way to get back on track, but I use it as a judgement call because not everyone responds well to that. But most jokesters I have just waant that acknowledgement.

    Dear Mr. Reynolds,
    Thank you for this timely video on how to deal with children who were act immaturely. I am on my final teaching practicum at an elementary school in Singapore and have been visiting your videos for advice whenever I encounter problems with classroom management. They have helped me tremendously to engage my students better in class and manage their behaviour. Thank you for inspiring me and encouraging us through your videos!

    Very helpful. Thank you. I have errored with not asking for help or setting up parent meetings due to feeling like the student behavior was my fault and that I needed to work on doing a better job with teaching expectations and being consistent. I am now paying for that. I am doing 4 parent meetings this week and I am following your communication style that you taught in many of your videos where you communicate that you are committed to helping the student be successful and ask for collaboration. During the meeting I ask if it would be helpful if I send them regular emails updating them on how their student is doing. I let them know that I will always try to notice and include things they are doing well in addition to things that need improvement. I also ask for student feedback on what I can do to help them. Wish me luck. I am trying really hard to improve their learning environment.

      I just had my administrator tell me not to set up meetings with parents because it is my job to conference with students. and I just need to inform the parents of the conference we had. So much for it takes a village.

    Really appreciate how you break down the steps you use! I've been in ES Art for 16 years, moving to MS this fall, and your videos are helping me get a sense of what's the same and what's different with older kids. In ES, when a whole class is acting up, it's usually because everyone is working independently and chatting loudly. When that's the case, I usually resort to a whole-class talk and 5-10 minutes of silent Art. The kids who prefer the quiet love it, and the rest get a chance to reset. They almost never get back up to their previous volume because the quiet time allows them to focus and find purpose in the work their supposed to be doing.

    Thank you for your perspective and time. I find the focus on being a Mentor helpful. The documentation reminder and "it being a village" is powerful.

    I asked an immature student: "Do you usually prefer to play with the older kids or the younger kids?" "Which ones do you usually respect more?" "Are the benaviours (I said what he did) adeqate to your age?" "Pay atterntion to how the other boys look at you when you act like that" "Not only are you disturbing your own education, everybody's education, making my work hard, but most of all, you are putting yourself into a position of a kid who won't be respected and liked. I already see the signs of something that can turn into bullying. I won't be with you outside of the class at all times. I won't always be there to immediatelly put a stop to it. Are you ready to do something not to let bullying happen?" (I am a private tutor, not a school teacher so I am not around students very often). We ended up making a deal that if he started acting childishly I would put my hand on his shoulder to let him know that he should stop.

    I’m struggling with this one student who when I call out on his “stuff” gets disrespectful, however another teacher who severely calls him out to the point of embarrassment, he thinks is “cool”. I don’t get it.

    I appreciate your videos SOO MUCH!!! This is my second year and I'm realizing that one of the biggest areas I need to focus on is being more consistent in my classroom. Do you know if your workshops can be counted as PD hours?

      Hi Patrick! Thanks for the kind words. I have had teachers get professional development, credit for workshops, videos, and one on one Mentoring with me. It’s really up to your school or district so I would talk to your administration and see what they say.

    I call those my CTJs--Come to Jesus meetings. Or, we need to have a CYSBYWY--check yourself before you wreck yourself meeting for one-on-one convo/dialogue.

      ✅ It’s the student not the parent you’ll see much of the day. The parent will say, “I told him to behave!” The student has to buy into and after the meeting, the kid’s behavior either gets worse or the behavior continues. It’s best to call when you’ve used all of your best tools.

    I am wondering about the order in which to redirect students. I have a few students who are immature and lack self control and it tends to spread to the rest of the class. I normally try to redirect them first because I know that if they are focused the rest of the class will focus too. I think i have been doing this backwards. Today I redirected a couple of students who were talking quietly whike i was trying to get the class to listen. I walk over to them and asked them polietly and quietly asked them to stop talking. They didnand said sorry. Then my students who were the bigger offenders followed their example.
