That's true, I am jus going to sit here in my parents 1 room shack with no dreams and disires and be happy,. I will also get girl ann maybe get married, have kids and we are going to huddle up in the shack with my brother and his wife and 3 children and my younger sister with husband.. We all going to be happy. I love it
the one thing I'm proud of, is I never felt for this trap, I went against my parents wish after 5 years of trying their way and then I never accepted society's idea to work until 65 at a 5-8 job to then retire. my current situation is worse than a person working 8-5 but atleast I have the free time to chase what I want and to develop the skills necessary, I've bought myself the time. Also, I dont have debts, kids, wife, no obligations. Just make enough to sustain my own costs of living and chase the dream. I'm suffering, but atleast I'm suffering for a chance to figure this shit out and not passively walk through it. current concerns are only: one habit that keeps you fit, one that makes you smart and one that makes you money.
Exactly. I don't recommend suffering to anyone, but I can say I much prefer being a failure by failing society's expectations about where I should be......by creating the space 'I' needed to figure out actions that truly come from ME.
It seems like in order to strip yourself from those desires you've copied from others, you must indefinitely isolate yourself from others. You can't have isolated desires from those you associate yourself with such as wife or parents for example.
You don't need to forever isolate yourself from other people, you just need to follow your own path, stop associating with people who tell you what job or hobby or passion they think would suit you, and cultivate friendships with those who support your goals.
That doesn't make any damnn sense. You're just advocating for pure narcissism. A wife or a mother telling what would suit is just a suggestion not an order or an obligation. @@richardmccabe2392
You can absolutely have isolated desires that without isolatating yourself from those around you. It just takes a strong self-knowledge of what you truly want, a significant degree of detachment from others expectations of what you should do/want, paired with the ability to not take their expectations on. You need to take time to listen to yourself, your intuition, your soul and god above else instead, and get clear. While temporarily useful, there's no need to be a permanent hermit. In fact, I'd argue being around people and strengthening the aforementioned skills/abilities is a much more useful path than isolating yourself from everyone (especially from a spiritual perspective).

Your approach is on a side of progress and hedonism. Naval is a Buddhist and what he’s trying to say is that before getting along with all the thoughts it’s better to observe them and decide which one suits and best for you.
You missed the point. Don't lose yourself in the course of sheepishly following the thoughts, beliefs and values of others, and if you must take on the desires of others as your own, you should at least try to do so with some self awareness.
That is true, but there are also some detrimental desires that may make you feel inferior or frustrated throughout life. Not all desires are bad or good.
But it is also true that we choose careers, habits, books, etc first by either getting inspired by someone(personality, people around us) or by naturally finding anything attractive/exciting to try. The answer lies in choosing what we're genuinely passionate and enjoy doing from whatever society throws at us or to fulfill their expectations..

Yet the association might be false. Then even if we pursue these things and don’t find happinies we convince ourselves that we are doing these thing for the sake of happines and the suffering that comes with them is justified. Yet, we rarely question if the things we believe that will lead to a good life will actually do that. We don’t question where we get the idea of how to build a good life. Now I believe that “a good life” or happinies has no preconditions. There is no such thing that one can point out so that happiniess is impossible without it. Moreover, no suffering is justified because it will lead to a good life. By the way, suffering can be justified for other reasons for example a person might love the procces of doing something which crates suffering like running a marathon or whatever. The mistake is to justify the suffering just because in the end you will be happy.

thats the dumbest thing. two year olds are that to the Nth degree. They have very, very heightened fears of the now. Have mom or dad walk into another room, and they won't know where the heck they are. This guy's message is fine: stop worrying about the Jones and just be particular with realizing why you think what you do... but we are a social species... we will always give 2 fucks about our surroundings if we aren't depressed cause that's the shit we do. that's why we pay for tickets to go vacation or see family and that's why we build websites and why farmers produce so well. its cause we kive in a society to care cause that's how we stay productive
why even sit and look at the mind and thoughts in the first place? children DO have thousands of thoughts. what they don't have is the IDEA-thought that I shouldn't have thoughts. and THUS, they aren't focussed on (leave alone obsessed and run by) thoughts. sitting and looking at thoughts might seem to free me, or and individual, from the mind's hegemony for time being. but what it does, and it HAS done, is made mind and thoughts more entrenched in humanity (and thus the individual) We have turned mind, and thoughts, into a demon they are not. Simply because we DON'T WANT them. that's our spiritual and psychological legacy. sadly.
Or maybe he reached a stage he is aware of the truth? Similar to the philosophers who have learned the truth? You can say I copied 1+1=2 from a scientist when I’m able to realise it on my own as well?

People copy my desires all the time.
thats the dumbest thing. two year olds are that to the Nth degree.
Thank you captain obvious
He is actually a vedantist
All desires are selfish, there’s nothing wrong with that. Your burning desires are from God.
Cause the child hasn’t lived yet!😂
why even sit and look at the mind and thoughts in the first place?
children DO have thousands of thoughts.
what they don't have is the IDEA-thought that I shouldn't have thoughts. and THUS, they aren't focussed on (leave alone obsessed and run by) thoughts.
sitting and looking at thoughts might seem to free me, or and individual, from the mind's hegemony for time being. but what it does, and it HAS done, is made mind and thoughts more entrenched in humanity (and thus the individual)
We have turned mind, and thoughts, into a demon they are not. Simply because we DON'T WANT them.
that's our spiritual and psychological legacy. sadly.
Naval is indeed an original thinker but some of his ideas are copied from Hindu scriptures and philosophers, knowingly or unknowingly.
Or maybe he reached a stage he is aware of the truth? Similar to the philosophers who have learned the truth? You can say I copied 1+1=2 from a scientist when I’m able to realise it on my own as well?
Knowingly lol. He is Indian himself
He talks about Hindu philosophy frequently for example the Bhagavadgita
Everyone in India talks about Bhagvad Gita, he also mentions OSHO as one of his inspirations
