The Secret Coastal Route - Scotland Winter Vanlife Travels
Vložit

- As we continue to be caught up in the storms that are battering scotland this winter it seems this week it was the high winds that brought down so many trees that caused the biggest disruption to our travel routes.
The worrying problem was the failure of the diesel heater though, we can always do our best to dodge the storms but a broken diesel heater in freezing temperatures is just not fun at all, so replacing the heater was an absolute must no matter how rough the working conditions.
We managed to get our more this week and had a fantastic walk along the mountains to see some epic views, which were made even nicer by the appearance of the sun for a few hours just before the snow returned!!
Let's also not forget to mention the stunning waterside parkup in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mountains and water it was one of our best parkups for a while.

I agree with Mandy 💯 - there is no need for negative comments. Also no need for people to leave a parting shot and then unsubscribe. If you don’t like it then leave. Too much negativity in the world. And, your content is good and happy (except for John’s recent injury) and real. I bomb around a lot on CZcams, but you are one of my staples - I watch every video. So, keep on! You have a solid base who love you! ❤
Thank you ❤️
Watch your videos John & Mandy, because you take me to places that I've always wanted to go and I have never been because I don't drive my family came from Glasgow to live up north Yorkshire, And as I watch your channel's I think of you as my family you are down to earth and say it like it is thank you and keep doing hope you have a wonderful 2024 🎉👍👍👍
Glad you like them!
Love travelling with you guys, the chats, down to earth, and the drone/driving shots! Feels like hanging out with friends!
I’ve only found your channels recently and love them both, you both keep it real and show it how it is rather than sugar coated, Mandy I enjoy your ‘extra chat’ as am the same age as you and having the same struggles so it’s nice to see menopause talked about. John I love your drone shots and watching you get stuck in and fix things. I built my own little camper last year and look forward to being brave enough to visit all the lovely places you show us. Take care up there ☺️
Thank you so much!!
Love the banter and the drone shots. Stay happy …. When I was up there in the dark skies we could see/picture the Milky Way….. any experience of that when you do get a clear night
Yes we got a few photos of it directly overhead, it’s stunning.
Yes you’re a pair of numpties but my favourite numpties on CZcams 🥰👌🏽
Lovely to see the Happy banter between you both..Just love Scotland. The scenery is so beautiful Happy Travels guys ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice one John. That is a stunning parkup. Sadly very busy when I got there back last October. Take Care 🙏
Why do I watch you guys? Because you are both genuine 😎
Thank you 🙏🏼
It's not a lake John, lol...Love the jacket (How Much) Not often you see any peaks on hood anymore...Lovely video as always mate 🙂 Looking forward to seeing your Starlink review 🙂
Hi guys
Another entertaining video that’s why I watch you on all of your channels
We parked up there in September it’s a great place there were four vans when we got there we went for a walk and when we got back we were horrified to find it now had fifteen vans so lucky you having to your selfs enjoy
A lot of people don’t seem to care about the 5 van rule.
I think that what full-timers like myself like about your channels is the, sometimes brutal, honesty.
I appreciate that 👍🏻
I just call mine 18 quid jeans off Bolton Market🤣 Ever since I got Viv my family coined a few names for me. The first one is "Captain slow" on account of I dont see the point of zooming through places in Viv-i-van when I can enjoy the drive and that was an epic drive you both went on. That park up.....wow and a dark skiesarea too. I'd have whipped me D850 out of its bag, plopped it on the tripod and done some "Lets do some photograph the milky way" sessions. The other name my family have for me is "Mr Reverso" On account that I'm utter pants at it. even when reversing-even with reversing and rear view camera on her roof I'm useless at backing up. I'd have been crying reversing back on that road lol.....and a few shouty swear words too. Great video both of you. It's brilliant to see you both still have that magic touch to make great videos together. Much respect🙏- Kenny
Great to see you two laughing and having fun again. I’ve been following you for a couple of years. All I can say is “ keep on nuttering “
Awesome! Thank you!
Love the vlogs, as always the scenery is fantastic. You go to areas that we don’t realise we have in this country. I like all the things you do, camera work, cycling, fixing anything it’s just an entertaining channel x
Glad you like them!
It’s not a lie it’s a loch!!!!! Enjoy your trip looks fantastic xx
What amazing scenery, glad you got your heating sorted. You both are so lovely and I love all your videos 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
Love Scotland but not been able to travel for years now. Appreciate your channel for letting me view the world, both known and unknown, from my home. True about anger! All the best of everything to you both for 2024. Stay warm! Love the banter ❤ p.s. Yes, you're a pair of numpties, wonderful ones, the type of people I'd love as friends. John, it's troosers in Scotland.
Thanks for watching!
I like ye, because after everything you went through, you did not give up on each other!
Thank you 👍🏻
Lovely video with stunning views again 😮 I’m glad you got the diesel heater sorted 😊 x
Thank you for sharing the beautiful scenery of Scotland and love you two and the way you are.
Wise to carry a second diesel heater.
Many thanks for a great video.
Thanks for watching!
That was some great reversing that you both did to get out of that track with all that trees and bushes on the road well done ❤❤❤❤
Thanks 👍
I follow because of the epic views but also because you make me laugh!! Keep on doing what you do.
Happy New Year to you both 🎉
Great watch guys, I wish I was brave enough to do Scotland in the winter. I'm a solo camper, sadly now, so I'm a bit nervous.
Some great park-ups, especially that last one. I've travelled that road down the coast from Fort William to Oban, I will have to try and find it 🤔
I went to the Isle of Whithorn earlier this year, thanks John for your recommendations, brilliant.
Take care, stay safe guys.
Best wishes, Si 👍🐸
Happy new year!
You are an ordinary couple who are doing what you want and share your adventures with us. 😊
😊 thank you
Loch Etive...beautiful parkup..we loved it there.. I don't suppose you saw an old chap called Charlie there did ya guys?
The good thing is if you embrace and experience your anger it'll be over before you know it. Nice to see you walking good Jon!! That was quite a crash with the ...was that a boogie board? 😂 Beautiful video .... Mahalo for sharing. Hau'oli Makahiki Hou ❤🎉🍾🎊🌈🤙
Thanks, it was a body board I had my accident in the snow 🙄🤦🏼♂️😂
Yes I saw you crash on Emily and Louise's channel. Bless your heart ... Owie!🌈🤙🥰
7:25 because I like you and the interesting trips.
John/Mandy, Super views of burns and lochs.
Thank you 👍🏻
Hi John and Mandy love watching your video it reminded me of the trip we went on to Scotland last year we also stayed in the place with the hotel in front of it in our motorhome it was great I think you are both lovely people keep it up guys happy 2024 to you both Julia and nigel
Loch Etive is a sea loch. It rises and falls with the tide :)
Having followed you together and as individuals for years, I just love your banter, and that you bother to show the scenery which I appreciate. Looking forward to your Starlink video John, live had a Dishy in France for 2 years now as I’m remote, I love it, but would like to hear your views and opinions. Happy New Year, much love. Jo in snowy south of France 🇫🇷
Awesome, thank you!
I watch you both because you’re relatable. Keep being you!
Thank you 😁
I watch all 3 channels, love the techy stuff and reviews, Mandy's cooking, amazing filming and inspiring places to visit, but the best bit is the lovely banter between you as it always leaves me with a smile on my face😊
Hi. Love the vibe. Sorry. But. Locks. In. Scotland from Bobby. Lanarkshire
Lock that you unlock with a key is what we are saying 👍🏻
I love you both. Keep up your vlogs and I send you both lots of love. ❤️💕and Happy New Year. ☘️
Happy new year!!
I think the thing I like most on your videos are the driving segments. I love to see the scenery. And your walks and of course, the drone shots.
That reverse driving you both had to do was amazing. Good job. I would be so nervous as I don’t really like to back up. It seems that there should have been a notice that the road was closed .
I am looking forward to the next adventure. Hope the weather is more cooperative.
Awesome, thank you!
Bedankt voor de leuke video’s
Thank you.
I love your “tell it how it is”style and enjoy your informative bits too. Keep up the good work and enjoying our scenery here in Scotland
Nice to see the rabbit running across just before the fallen tree
That got us all chatting, I think it was a bird though and not a rabbit.
@johnmandy Yes I think your right I watched it again and zoomed in
You are a pair of numpties 😂 I also thought that you looked like Bill and Ben on the rear view when you were walking up the hill. I luv the scenery shots.
Love watching your travels and your wild camping 😊
Its a Shatnav that you need for the poo lol :-)
😂
Hi guys, lovely bit of reversing I’m impressed. Great scenery. Travel safely ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it 😁
Obviously I'm totally watching for the Dad jokes. 😅
😂
Daz wants a heater fitting in his land yacht if you need practice lol great vid as usual
Nope guys, it’s still trousers. However, I don’t understand why it’s a pair when it’s only one garment. Okay there are two legs but a jumper has two sleeves and it’s not a pair of jumpers!
I’ve never heard of under trousers though 😂
@@johnmandy Well, that’s because it’s underwear. 🤷♀️
I learned something this vid, Breakfast, Dinner and Tea! What time is Tea normally. Here in Northern Ontario, Canada... it's Breakfast, Lunch and dinner (7=8pm) if you are posh! and Breakfast Dinner and Supper (5-6pm) if you are working class🤪 Beautiful views! I actually googled the area. I can't wait to get to Scotland some day!
Thanks for watching, for us we have tea in the early evening, roughly 6pm
Born and bread in London and we also have breakfast, dinner & tea, so not just northerners 😂😂
Where were you when you went for the walk at the start of the film? The views! 😍
Locations are shown on screen 👍🏻
How many times does John say epic in each video
Oh many times 😂
Morning John, can i check what size wheels you have? I remember in one vid abroad I think you mentioned Euro vans were a bigger wheel leading to better gearing ratios less engine load etc or did i get that wrong? your website had a link for 16" but cant remember if that was existing wheels or new revised Euro bigger wheels?, think changing wheel size would potentially also change speed calibration? did you manage to find somewhere that can do that if required?
Yes the euro band come with 16” wheels & tyres so that’s what I’ve put on our vans, I have the bfg k02 all terrain tyres.
So nice to see you so happy together - Happy New Year
Happy new year!!
Another great video John 👍 Why do do watch your channel ? Nice people, good content and educational, love it , I have been watching for a while, I think it was when you and mandy lived in your house and you upgraded the springs on your camper van .
Thanks 👍
Hi again you stayed in my favourite spot , Its a hidden secret please don't give to much details of where it is, if you two walk back to where the little White House it and follow the track there is a beautiful little pub in the woods . 20 mins walk over that river you don't want to talk about what way it goes once you get over the river by the silver iron bridge cross the field and the pub is behind the tree.I went there for 2 weeks and stayed for 5 months last year.Donny Wilcox lives in walking distance there. Stunning in summer time and dangerous in the water, Have a look next time your there Connel bridge is a giant bath with the plug pulled out lol. Thanks for sharing nice to see the place in winter time. There is a toilet there by where you parked get cleaned twice a week. Grahams grocery in the village takes in all your parcels or any thing you need sent to you. Ray K UK YNWA.
Thanks Ray 👍🏻
Love your videos and had to laugh when you said “A-up fancy going……”. So funny “A Up….. wonder where that originated from
It’s a northern expression, the same as you’d say whatcha if you were around the London area.
Cor blimey, you'd need help from Paul Bunyan to chop that tree down 😮
Great vlog guy's 👍 👌
Be safe
Ey. Scotland is definately beautiful & most pass by The Borders? You should visit St Marys Loch & Grey Mares tail. Moffat & Peebles Town has a lot to offer and is vibrant with independant high st shops & riddled with history ?
Thanks for the info 👍🏻
I love the variety you give us John x
Great drone shots amazing how you zoom in on that house
Thanks 👍
My heater does the same, smokes but doesn't fire up, the glow plug is pulling 8 amp so that's ok. Your mate ( ex army lad cant recall his name ) his heater was doing the same also. I have figured it out. At the side of the glow plug is a small hole for the initial combustion air and it is blocked up. Just needs poking clear with a pointy nail. 👍 ( You will probably need to give the atomiser mesh a clean too and be sure it is below and clear of said hole when reinstalled )
That was cleaned a few days earlier and didn’t help sadly.
@@johnmandy You will have to let us know what caused it when you get time to look at it. Not many things to go wrong really.
Another brill video guys 😁😁 oop North #northwestisbest 🤣🤣
Too right 😁
@@johnmandy 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi guys just catching up on your videos was just wondering John what radios do you use I travel with my brother and we have cheap walkie talkies but I’m quite liking your setup and loving the vids 👍😁
If you search our channel you’ll find a video all about them 👍🏻
this is purely my curiosity or nosiness if you like but ive always wondered if you are a couple or partners and if you are why do you use separate vans, or is it your just good friends who travel together. as i said you dont have to answer if you dont want to, im just curios. thanks for the vids
We are a married couple and explained this in our previous video 👍🏻
i do apologise. teach me for not watching all your vids first eh. i will go back and watch it tho to satisfy my nosiness. lol keep making the vids i enjoy them@@johnmandy
Hi John, just wondering what walkie-talkie you use or is it a CB? Handset.
Hi, the radios are Boafeng 👍🏻 amzn.to/3NVZFx7
You are finding some good places up there in Scotland. Are you both fairly new to the country? How many visits have you made there? I'm enjoying what seems to be your 'virgin' delight in the wild scenery.
We’ve been visiting Scotland for decades but we’ve only been visiting in a campervan for the past 3 years.
John, have you got a link for the new coats you and Mandy got I could do with a nice warm coat taking the dogs out.
Reasons for sticking around and watching your content, honesty and showing all the great stuff but also the rough stuff you 2 went through. Main reason tho was Coop but I thought I would stick around because you 2 ain’t bad either. All the best to you both.
Thanks 😁

Seeing as you ask , I like the drone footage basically most footage really , we are all but numpties in the great scheme of things, you are not alone. Here’s a numpty question 😊Would you think it’s a good idea to mount my diesel heater under my van , I will semi enclose it , I know it needs ventilation . I don’t have a lot of room inside , if you prefer not to answer that’s fine . Well done both great vlog good luck 👍👍👍🏴🇬🇧🏴🇨🇦🏴
A lot of diesel heaters get mounted under vans, so as long as you protect it from water then it should be fine.
Happy new year and happy, safe travels in it, both!
Now, here’s a northern thing. Do you say “It’s fleein’” when it’s freezing cold? 16 miles north of Manchester (Rossendale) we do/did (long since moved away) but only a fellow ‘refugee’ from there has heard of the word where I now live. Ah, the days when every little town has its own accent, etc. Anyway, thanks for all your great filming and videos.
Laura
Oh I’ve never heard of that 🤷🏼♂️
Hi John what make of chinese heater have you got the quiet one
Which radios are you using, John Baofeng?
Aye, there are some cracking spots in Scotland. we had 6 weeks up there in October and November last year, and I can't wait to get back later this year.
Hi, the radios are Boafeng 👍🏻 amzn.to/3NVZFx7
@johnmandy cheers, John. If you've done a review of them on Gadget John, I won't have seen it.
From one northern ta tother 😅 another great video ❤
Best cooking video, how to cook pizza in a george forman. I have done this ever since 😊
Wow, thanks! I do enjoy the odd pizza in the little grill 😂
How many times does John say epic blimey
Not enough 🤣
@@johnmandy really😁
Have you been down to seil yet?
Not been there yet but it’s a pin on our travel map to visit there one day 👍🏻
Hi john excellent video as always i like the look of your hiking / rain coat can you tell me what one it is please thanks
It’s a Rab Valiance jacket www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B5LBB3YZ/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_4G340B9KE16DX98939Y8?linkCode=ml2&tag=gadjoh06-21
Hi John and Mandy. Were you just outside Tomintoul pulled up on the road from/to Lecht on Wednesday 27th December? Great video by the way 🙂👍
Yes it was us 👍🏻
Mandy may I ask what make your van is and is it high top medium wheel base. ??? Looks the perfect size. Thanks . Love the channel. Also can you recommend any van converters??
It’s the H2 roof and it’s 5 meters long, twin sliding doors but the doors are normally on a H1 van, so it’s all kinds of unique 😁👍🏻
We built our vans ourselves 👍🏻
@@johnmandy thankyou
Sorry southerners they're trousers.
Glad you like it up North in Scotland 😉
26:17 do you park facing the wind if it's strong, so that you don't rock too much?
Yes, we park into the wind, but nature loves to change the winds direction whenever it wants 🤦🏼♂️
@@johnmandy take care!
Hi you two, any chance you could give a location for that parkup? Going that way in May. Keep the feeds coming.
We prefer not to say, it floods and we don’t want to be responsible for others getting stuck there.
Hari OM
Yeah, I've long ago come to the conclusion that the weather apps all live in hope... and it is best not to do that for real! You are properly outfitted, so the weather be d****d. Crikey though, it would have been good for a sign to have been up about that road block... oh well. Good skills test... YAM xx
One thing I’ve never understood is why you fit top end kit but keep buying the copy heaters. Given your recent issues have you not considered biting the bullet and buy an Autoterm?
The first unbranded diesel heater we fitted in our motorhome worked flawlessly in -20°C and is still working fine for the new owner. So from that experience it made no sense to spend money on expensive brands, however, I’m thinking more recently produced unbranded heaters are far less well made and we therefore might be looking at buyer branded heaters for our vans soon.
Have you seen Nessy. Yet
Nicola & her motorhome you mean? 🤣
Hi there, what radio do you use to talk to Mandy. Thanks. Loving the vids.
Thanks 😂 the radios are Boafeng 👍🏻 amzn.to/3NVZFx7
Cheers John. Stay safe. @@johnmandy
I was planning coming up before I returned to work but I’ve had sec thoughts instead having 3days in wales photographing jets doing low level flying I’ll save Scotland for summer or spring
I hope you have fun at the loop 👍🏻
Hi Guys - what's the 2-way radio you use - couldn't see it on your gear page... Thanks
Hi, the radios are Boafeng 👍🏻 amzn.to/3NVZFx7
I love all you post...I am new here. I am, like Mandy, love to learn about the animals around. ...scat is an easy way to be know and be dazzled by what wild creature was just where you are now walking. I love seeing you two get along. Cooking is good. Mending from mishaps is good to see. I like seeing technical problems solved. The awesome campsite that had great things for you as a camper-good to see acts of kindness still allowed. Great seeing the scenery whatever the weather. I love that you found a good way, with having two spaces...kinda important to have own space. ...love that you show how that can work and love still abound.
Welcome & thanks for the lovely feedback ❤️
John can you help me plz. i'm converting a van and I can't get my chinese desiel heater to work unless i'm plugged into shore power. I have 3 130ah 12v lead acid batteries which are brand new connected in parallel, when I try to start the heater using the batteries it throws not enough power error.. any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Usually that’s down to cable size & cable length.
Appy new year.

great video as usual,i can see your coat is a Rab but what’s it called ?
It’s a Rab Valiance Jacket 👍🏻
@@johnmandy cheers john 👍

Until I’ve tested the new heaters for longer I’d rather not mention the brand.
