Ed Gein was not a traditional serial killer in terms of numbers, but he is infamous for his gruesome crimes and the inspiration he provided for many horror movies. Gein was responsible for the deaths of two women in Wisconsin in the 1950s, but he was also known for robbing graves and creating furniture and clothing out of human skin and body parts. He was declared insane and spent the rest of his life in a mental institution.

He loved his mother one moment she could be dark and bad the next she could be nice and kind. She had the same mental illness as her son.

I mean, I can literally take a walk and be at MMHI (mendota institute) in less than 5 minutes.
I hate going back there though because it's eerily quiet if you go back far enough. There's some sort of what looks like a little village back there. A bunch of (can't think of the name, but it's black and white paneled wood on the exterior) buildings, all seemingly vacant. Not even the birds were chirping back there

She wanted her son to be cut off from the world, because in her mind it was full of nothing but evil while she was holier then thou, she gave her son a life without love or friends, and he ended up just as she wanted: broken, alone, and hated by everyone

He gloosed over the part about Mary Hogan's disappearance. Mary was a bartender and when she vanished, Gein still went to the bar where she worked frequently. People wondered what happened to Hogan and spoke of it often. Gein used to say, "Oh, she's over at my place.". People shrugged it off thinking him to be the local oddball.

Ed Gein was only 5' tall. I knew a guy who worked at Mendota when Ed was still alive. He said that he was a nice guy. Other people have told me that Ed used to go shopping in my hometown (which was a larger town near by) all of the time.

I believe she's the person who kept him in check then when she died he was left with zero supervision and this was the result. Maybe it's a combination of both his mental illness and his mother's strict parenting but to blame her solely is something I disagree with.
Different parents, different genes. If his parents were normal themselves, he most likely wouldn't have been a killer.. but who knows, he could've still been just as mentally ill, since it's speculated to have a lot to do with both the enviorment *and* the genetics of an individual.

I live in Wisconsin and my step dad being a horror fan we visited the location. The locals kicked us out of a restaurant for even asking about it. We did visit the unmarked grave since people often stole the head stone of ed. We only found it by finding his mom's grave. It seems the locals want nothing to do with the horrors that took place.
My moms boyfriend has a friend who, before he died, met Ed. He said that Ed seemed to be a nice old man, but was very quiet.
I never would have known that there were people in this world who are more messed up than serial killers. this man is by far the most disturbing you have ever posted.
Just a note, some of the pictures of his “human furniture” aren’t the real thing. They are artistic recreations. Many of his things were destroyed before being photographed unfortunately.

You can *almost* feel sorry for the man. Almost. Because I think that due to nature vs nurture, if he had had a normal upbringing and a mother who wasn't fucked in the head, he probably would have turned out pretty normal, not to mention his brother would probably have lived.
As someone who was raised under only a negligent and abusive mother, I can fully understand the damage it does to one's mind when you have such negativity instilled in you. I just managed to overcome it due to modern psychology techniques and mental illness acceptance/treatments.

Trey Magathan This is a nature vs nurture type of assertion. Clearly ozder lends more credence towards nurture when it comes to human development. However, there are several reasons why someone is a criminally merely because it's their nature. Ever heard of antisocial personality disorder? The disorder that means you have no conscience, essentially. I would say it's more likely that a mix of upbringing and genetics are what make someone into a criminal. Especially when we're talking about people that make outfits out of skin.
My best friend is clinically psychopathic as well as schizophrenic, and he endured a lot of childhood trauma brought on by his mother as well. I believe that these types of illnesses are a combination of being "made" and "born." Gein was probably already pre-wired to violence/mental illness, but it may not have escalated to this degree if he had a better childhood.

I actually watched The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with my cousin for Halloween and she was horrified to learn that the family's... behaviours in that movie were based on Ed Gein.

The behavior was based off of the fact it was like...a hundred degrees Fahrenheit at the time and they were starting to lose their god damn minds. They legit cut the girl's finger with a razor and stuck it in "Grandpa's" mouth.

Ed’s mother kept him from marrying and having fellowship with others... none of which is biblical- it’s evil. She was self-centered, bitter, mean, controlling, and non-sacrificial towards her husband and children. How is any of this Biblical? It simply is not. When people distort the Bible it doesn’t automatically represent God, and for this, their credibility is lost in translation. Ed’s mother was not a role model for Christianity in any sense of the word.

I spent time in Mendota hospital as teenager in 1987. Some of the older staff would tell stories about Ed but we never knew if they were true or if they were just trying to scare us. Of course all of us kids were convinced his ghost roamed the grounds and told each other ghost stories about him. While in Mendota he was kept in Goodland (or Goodman something like that) Hall, the building with the prison type razor wire fence around it. We were told that's where they housed the criminally insane patients.
Great job on the video, this is the most accurate telling of the Gein story I have heard on CZcams. I have read books and watched everything I could on him as an adult. Most people get a lot of facts about the case wrong, you nailed it.

I decided to go and visit Ed Gein's grave. As soon as I stepped foot in Plainfield I knew there was something wrong with that city. The way Stephen King described Derry in his novels, evil: everything and everyone. I felt sadness at his grave, but everywhere else, evil.
