Anyone listening to this fantastic song in 2024? We had better times then....
here i am from Japan, my friend out there.
big time
Hello from London! Keep rocking! I exercise daily to my fave 70's memories
That's because you were younger
I want to go back 😢
This is the most beautiful version of this wonderful song.
RIP Gary Shearston
I agree amazing
was wondering about that. yes, rip. best cover.
@@sandsmine Was für ein großartiger Song. Leider wird er nirgends mehr gespielt.
It's excellent. Doing a rock version was a cool idea - but I prefer the Ella Fitzgerald version.
I love this song ❤
Easily the best recorded version of this great song.
Such a great song, and a great man. Gary and I served as Priests in the Anglican Diocese of Riverina for most of the 90's. We shared on many occasions, whether it be worship, retreats, or general ministry. RIP Gary, we know where you are. God bless, Ken. 🙂✝
I find that so moving. Bless you
@@ashrimpest6921 Bless you too. Be safe, and the Lord fill you with his Spirit .. 🙂
It's hard to believe that this gorgeous song is already 50 years old.
❤️🤍🌹🥀
So what can I say..
A charming adorable singer with a mesmerizing voice!
A beautiful text and an enchanting melody.
I'm wondering why this beautiful song isn't finally being covered again, it would definitely be a great hit!
🤍🌹 Thank you and Rest in Peace, Mr. Gary Shearston! 🙏🌟
Love this... Back in the 70s when everyone seemed so much happier and music was a joy.
.......and someone somewhere had a party on a Saturday night....
Oh yeah and that pesky vietnam war. Hahahahahah
Music back then kept us all sane😀
@@berkshirebelleable ha ha yes. Those were the days, this song sums up the 70s. Simple and mellow easy listening.💯
@@berkshirebelleable CERTAINLY TRUE IN OUR NEIGHBOURHOOD. IT WAS THE DECADE OF DISCO AND DANCE OF ALL TYPES.
Memories of so long ago and from a world which is now very sadly missed.
Rest in peace, Gary.
I didn't know he died!!! RIP.
@@clairduffy60 bless your naivety Clair, God bless you my friend, jim Duffy.
Well said UKRAVER1956
Oh no, I didn’t know he had died😢
Brilliant comment, spot on.
Remember listening to this as I sat in my rented room as a rather lonely 17 year old in Belfast just starting work and listening to it on a tiny second hand radio that my lovely sister had given to me which she had had from the mid sixties, the casing on the back has long since disappeared and it needed a matchstick wedged into it to get it to work. Happy memories, I miss you sis.
Into1657 this was the very first 7 inch record me and my mum bought. Fabulous times ❤️🇬🇧
Yes i remember this from the radio, i heard it on a car radio, David Hamilton was playing it on Radio One when it charted!..Songs are like photo s sometimes are nt they?..evoking fond memories
So cute.
@@sylviaflores6265 im belfast too..
❤️
This is a song I have cherished since the 70's. It takes me back to when I lived and worked in London. Another time, another place, but in 2023 its still a favourite that holds so many memories for me. Thank you Gary xx
♥️♥️♥️
Like me I never get tired listening to this great song ❤
he looked like such a sweet gentle soul ;D
Priceless gem. The tone of his voice perfectly matches the mood of the song. Brilliant. Perfection!
I’m only 24 so I’m used to none of my friends knowing these sort of songs, but this record is beautiful.
Yep ...stands the test of time 👍
I adore this my darling daddy bought it for me as he loved it now my son loves it 70 s hard to beat for the great music x
this is my best song ever, Cole Porter could not have done better .R.I.P. Gary Shearsten.
And on the same album, the closing track is another classic "Great American Songbook" composition "Without A Song" which Shearston absolutely nails !
Boa 🙂😜 é linda
A beautiful, almost haunting version of this Cole Porter classic. I love his 'buttoned-down' performance, never letting it get dramatic or shouty. As for that violin break in the middle, it was just perfect - no wonder he broke into a smile! Brilliant.
I was in love at the time.❤
Fantastic song from the 70's and his accent is perfect for this Cole Porter classic
Up until now I had no idea what Gary looked like but I have always loved this version of the song. Watching him deliver a beautifully melancholic performance (broken only by a wistful half smile in the solo break) has just completed the picture I have had for about 40 years. So sad to hear he is no longer with us but music as good as this leaves a legacy that will never fade away. RIP Gary and thank you for music. Thanks for uploading this.
The song , of course, was written by the great Cole Porter, in the 1930's I believe. But the re- styling of the rythm and backing is unique and inspirational, and surprised everyone.
Once heard I keep coming back to re-enjoy this ageless version. Heartfelt musical love letter.
Magnificent classic nobody else could have done this better. Thank You Mr Shearston.GOD BLESS.
This song brings me back to really happy times ..Working with the coolest lot of people ..Singing along with the radio and Gary ,❤ The moment I hear the start ,I'm back there . some of my pals have passed away ,but with this song ,we're all together ,laughing ,living life ,carefree ,,,singing it loud ...I get a kick ...outta you .😊
1974 , the place is Ossett West Yorkshire, and this version played over and over in our office. Loved it then, and love it now. Just found it again
1 man.....1 Guitar.....= 1 wonderful song....
The definitive rendition from the seventies ...
So many lovely memories of my carefree youth. Thank you Gary, who, though no longer with us, leaves a legacy for us to enjoy.
How old would Gary have been when he passed away ? don't think he would have been much older than me at the time at 21.
Miss you mate. Miss your music too. God bless ya.
I listen to this song so much. I just love it. It is so gentle. xxoo
I love this song. It reminds me of better days.
Me too
Ditto.
Can't believe it's nearly fifty years ago l used to listen to this song, where's Gary from sounds Australian ?
@@jimmydempsey6857 I know.... yes he was Australian.
@@MP3Rider Thought l could hear a bushwhacker twang coming through ! 👍👍
Fantastic version of this Cole Porter classic from the wonderful Gary Shearston and amazing violin playing from the brilliant Graham Smith. Pure class.
You may remember that the violinist Graham Smith played in the band String Driven Thing. He was equally brilliant in that. I saw the band many times during 1973/74. A pity they never became famous. I'm digressing though, Gary Shearston's version of the old Cole Porter classic does justice to an already great song.
Thanks for the info regarding this tune 👍💞
😅back in time, Come with me in the muziek time machine. a babyboomer, love you all❤
His voice makes the difference, that’s why I felt in love with him.
After so many years when I listed for the first time, a very wonderful sort of hug from him embrace me. Believe it or not, but that happened to me.
Still I love you Gary.
Sylvia Flores Yes, I know what you mean 👍😘
Isn't it strange how time doesn't erase our true feelings.
the best version of this Cole Porter classic....R.I.P. GARY SHEARSTON
All that "jazziness" removed to reveal a pure and unassuming piece of music ... love it being so understated but effective, RIP young man
This great song had to wait 40 long years to get its best and definitive version by the late great
Gary Shearston most ably abetted by the great musical skill of Margaret Roadknight on the magic violin ! But it was more than well worth waiting for !
Pretty sure it is Grahame Smith, this taken from garyshearston dot com
Track: from the album 'Dingo', released on the Charisma label (UK) in 1974. Note: by Gary Shearston.
Musicians: Gary Shearston, vocal & guitar; Gary Taylor (acoustic) guitars; Rod King, pedal steel guitar; Dave Oiney, bass; Andrew Steele, drums; Grahame Smith, violin; Jim Parker, string arrangement.
It is a stunning version, that came from nowhere.
I don't know who the violinist is but it added to the song.
the voice, the music, the lyric, all superb, never to be repeated.
The most beautiful sincere version of this song I have heard. I loved Gary Shearston🎵♥
So beautiful. The wistingfulnes, the violin solo! Great version. Love it!
Simply brilliant classic performed by a great singer and a terrific band ..Best version - even Cole Porter would have loved it !
What a song !!!
Never heard of him. I'm so glad I clicked on the link!
My wife loves this song since the first day she heard it. It reached no7 in the British charts in October 1974 and hung around for 8 weeks
It's amazing how such an underdone version is so good. IMO the best of them, and there's competition from some gr8 vocalists.
After so many years I'm hearing this song again and Iam very touched !
Absolutely beautiful 👍😘
There is not much to left and I start to cry... 😥
Love this version of Cole Perter's classic. Sadly, this lovely young man, Gary Shearston, died a couple of years ago. Beautiful legacy.
Another Aussie forgotten in the music wilderness.. gone but not forgotten..
Just one BRILLIANT version of this song love his voice
Part of the soundtrack of my life..this version, this voice. RIP, sir
Simply beautiful
Absolutely the best version - in my book anyway...always listened to radio Luxemburg in the mid 70's where I head this song for the first time....been stuck in my head again for the past week now. Wonder if he performed it in the 80's or 90's ...??...can't seem to find any live performances...!!!!
.....heard..... :)
No it was released in the early 70's magical
Yes he did. Here in Australia, England, and America.
Forgot about radio Luxembourg!😁
A song which brightened my darkest days.......how lovely to hear it in the sunshine
RIP Gary......lovely interpretation.
R.I.P. Mr Shearston.
Brilliant performance of a wonderful song.
Can't ask for more can we ?
i don't know what to say about this performance ,i have known this song since gary Shearston 1974 or 1975 , fantastic song 🙂
Raw talent of years gone by. Days sadly missed. I was only a young fellow when it came out. But still feels like yesterday.
Takes me back to the late seventies and to a Lady who was Loved and Lost.
Sets me back on my heels every time I hear it. One of those perfect arrangements and versions. Perfect in every way.
So sad he's gone, I never knew about him, love his voice.
Oh what a good version
His almost dead-pan delivery WORKs !!
Really evokes the memories of October 1974.
I played this song every day when i went to work has a builder in 2010 whem my late sister in law Olga took her own live at the age of only 46 two weeks before her birthday i wich i had called to see her to pass her house and her grave at 8 in the morning was so sad wanted to play the violin at her burial ref this snog miss you so much beautiful olga 😢 from ger wales
Really brings back memories, i remember exactly where i was and what i was doing when i first heard this song.
Way over 40 years ago it was, yet i still remember it as clear as day.
R. I. P. GARY SHEARSTON.
the sweeping violin accompanies him so well.
UNDERSTATED MAGIC, PURE CLASS
Superbe Gary !
RIP Gary thanks for this
one off song by gary shearston ,,,,one word,, A CLASSIC
Love that violin break like in come up and see me by cockney rebel
R.I.P. Cole and Gary
I bought this record back in the day. Loved the whole arrangement of the song. Still gets to me.... RIP Gary Shearston. Love you. x
Takes me back to being a young man and happier times, great song sang beautifully
I'm glad there's no dislikes
wonderfully arranged tune, think this made the UK top ten way back. Gary Shearston was Australian.
so glad , i found him back , everyone love it
I was 10 / 11. Such a big man then I thought as I could walk home alone after cricket on a Friday to close my school week. Two summers long ago in a world now unrecognizable, and not for good reasons so often.
Love his understated style.
love this song , bring back my yesterday 🙏
One of the best, beautiful old song
My favourite rendition of a truly great song.
I used to play this over and over on my personal stereo at night when I was little. It was the first cassette I had ever bought with my pocket money - 10p in a jumble sale and I've only just found him again because I had forgotten this song and his name 🤗❤️ I love the bit at the end best 🎧
@2:59 Krystianna Maria Konczewski = his girlfriend at that time.
We always try to get back to those lazy summer days, cycling down forgotten country lanes, the fragrance of flowers in the warm breeze in the mid 1970's - we always try to return 'home' to those carefree times - but of course - we never can.💜💜
Lady Snowblood so sad but true what you say my friend.
Lady Snowblood beautiful sentiment my friend.x
you are spot on...the best times,,,a different world, ahhhh time goes so fast,,,,ta Lady
Lady Snowblood
Lady Snowblood God I wish we could get back to those days my friend.
Memories of buying this 45 from Woolworths with my pocket money and the excitement if playing it loud on my cassette player!
Love this song and version, it has a special place in my heart, and has a lot of memories attached!
beautiful
I thought, Gary Shearston? Never heard of him! Then, oh that song!
Questa canzone l''ho ascoltata per la prima volta nel 1978.avevo21an i! La v gioventù! !ora ne ho quasi64!comunque sempre bella!!
1 word, beautiful
Beautiful and unique cover of one of Cole Porters greats. Sadly missed...
All time great song and sublime version of it .
Even further enhanced by the brilliant violin playing of Margaret Roadknight .
That girl can play the violin just like ringing a bell !
Margret Roadknight was a singer, surely.
Pretty sure it is Grahame Smith, this taken from garyshearston dot com
Track: from the album 'Dingo', released on the Charisma label (UK) in 1974. Note: by Gary Shearston.
Musicians: Gary Shearston, vocal & guitar; Gary Taylor (acoustic) guitars; Rod King, pedal steel guitar; Dave Oiney, bass; Andrew Steele, drums; Grahame Smith, violin; Jim Parker, string arrangement.
RIP Gary.
I've just heard this again on Johnny Walker's BBC Radio 2 show where is was being put forward as better than the original. I heard it some years ago for the first time and I'd certainly agree with that. I love this version of Porter's classic, I think it has a haunting and quite melancholic tone which surpasses the original.
I remember this so well from a very happy period of my life, just started a challenging new job.
Brings back so many memories of my teenage years.
Same here Peter, I was 17 in 1974. It was a great decade for music.
Indeed I am listening in 2024. I remember this song well when I came out in 1974 ~ I was about 10 years old. Within a few weeks there was also Ralph McTell ~ The streets of London. I think that both were covers and were at least as good as the originals ! Also that year was ‘Sugar Baby Love’ The debut single by The Rubettes which I had, which I virtually played to death before forgetting it on a French exchange summer holiday!! Why can’t we have music like this now! And ‘get a kick even has a violin in it!
The best version of this song :)
you didnt mean it right?
Yes - I've searched for a good version, thinking I'd find a 30's treasure, but am so disappointed with most versions including those by Sinatra and all the other big names who recorded it. The song doesn't need 'fancying up' either !
I think you would like Peter Skellern's version too. It's beautifully understated just like this performance. Skellern has a wonderfully nostalgic voice that really suits all the old 1930s and 1940s songs. His version of this song is here on CZcams. Some other old songs he sings beautifully are 'I don't want to set the world on fire' and 'Night and Day'. Enjoy :)
Just needs playing..xxx
Agree. Absolutely. This is one of those rare cases when a cover improves the original song...with all due respect...
this is an old 40s song great version rip gary 😊❤💐
awesome
Had forgotten all about this one. Beautifully arranged and performed.
Maravilhosa
You see where Gary looks to his right during the instrumental break? He smiles; he was smiling at me - I was making eyes at him in the wings, and he gave me a big hug afterwards!
Great song.
Really one of the Best versions os the fabulous song!
Brilliant singer lovely song r.i.p.garry
