Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

Would you choose stories, legends, or the truth?
Every myth has a basis in fact.
Truth. Watch Europa the last battle.
Truth. Even if it hurts.
@@IndomitableAde sometimes I think the truth should hurt. The truth is pure and free of distortion.

He is an actor, a double agent, Toranaga use Saeki for enter the army of this brother in Osaka, the Toranaga CLAN army.
The minute the cannon guys looked up I thought it was going to be a Red Wedding
That's the difference between that show and this show, and also fuedal Europe and fuedal Japan. It's not deliberately trying to be bad.
There was no wedding
@@Kumire_921 Referencing the betrayal to "Red Wedding" from the Game of Thrones series.
Except this show lacks characters as amazing as roose bolton and walder frey
@@Magnonx That's silly. It's a limited series telling a single story and has managed to be very compelling from the first episode... and we've only had seven so far. I would say at the same point in GoT, only Lord Eddard and King Robert were as compelling as Toranaga-Sama and most of the supporting cast across the first seven episodes. And at least the makers of Shogun won't even have the chance to take a decade of fan goodwill, meticulously built up characters, and storylines & then burn it all with one rushed and embarrassing six episode season to end it.
As a Japanese, I can say that the acting of Saeki is like that of a Kabuki actor in a period drama. The acting of Kabuki actors is always exaggerated and deliberate, whether it is a period drama or a contemporary drama. At first I thought he was a Kabuki actor.
Compared to the other actors he did give me a different impression, perhaps it's the character itself that was like that though. Never read the book nor watched the 1980 show so i can't say.
Saeki was puffed up with self importance and power with the new appointment as Regent. Perhaps there was underlying hatred between brothers.
Common mistake Japanes, Chinese and Korean people make. When you say "as a Japanese person," that is correct. However, when you say "I am Japanese," "japanese" is used as an ADJECTIVE to descrbe "I." So when you say "as a Japanese person," you cannot say "as a Japanese" because "Japanese" is ALWAYS an adjective. Therefore, "Japanese" MUST be used as an ADJECTIVE to describe "person."
I hope this helps.
@@davidholaday2817 Japanese can also be a noun, describing a person of Japanese descent. So saying "As a Japanese" is correct, I think.
@@TheGoldennach No no, no it's not. It is simply not.
This whole scene remind me of 'the red wedding' in Game of thrones without casualties...
😂😂😂😂😂
I don't buy it, it's all an illusion.
Toronaga has one of the best spy networks of that time. His army was not damaged enough to have its border posts so unprotected. Toronaga has infiltrators in Osaka and he is aware of the movements of the Lord Regents and Taiko's former concuvine (Oda Nobunaga).
Besides, the scene of Blackthorne's anger and departure clearly was planned. Crimson Sky plan is in execution and only a handful of Toronaga's vassals are aware, his son emotionally unstable and reckless... obviously he was not worthy of knowing and died for being a weak man.
Toronaga's brother is infiltrated in the group of the regent Lords and all that lack of respect and mockery towards Toronaga's stories are part of the tricks.
There are small obvious details to believe in what I mentioned above. Examples: Execution letters cannot be omitted if the person in question takes them and reads them. That's why Toronaga didn't let his son take the letter and that's why Toronaga's brother threw the order for Toronaga's execution at the old man and not at the same Toronaga next to him.
And lastly, I would like to add that the head of the concuvines found out that the TOronaga army is outside the province: Men talk too much when they are with a woman. Because of her silence and appreciation of Toronaga, she asked him for land and money, to create a network of Geishas (spies).
I agree but there ARE differences from the book and 1980 Shogun so we can't be absolutely sure how it will play out.

Sanada-san says that falconry is important to Toranaga. His line from the falconry scene in ep.1 "Conceals herself against the sun." Conserving energy, waiting for her moment. "You might never even know she's there."

At the same time, Toranaga must find his nearest enemy...

This scene was great.
It could be that Saeki is in on it. He plans to 'march' Toranaga and his army to Osaka with his own army. That way they can both quickly and easily approach Osaka without obstacle and quickly initiate Crimson Sky. Toranaga and Saeki are probably much aware that Ishido's spies are everywhere and even Yabushige could turn on them at any time. Saeki brought the head of the general of Yabushige's just to perhaps fool him that Saeki is seriously in siding with the regents and is going through with not siding with his brother.

Much different from the book. Though Zataki is full of air, they were reminded by the old samurai to behave according to their position. No need to be rude to each other and talk in a civil and polite way.
Saeki hasn't betrayed Toronaga. It's a ploy so they can execute "Crimson Sky" at Osaka with Saeki's army.
red wedding vibe
almost did a red wedding
I bet Saeki is going to be the story's Kobayakawa Hideaki. Too bad the battle of Sekigahara wasn't depicted in the novel and likely wouldn't be depicted in the series as well. If you don't know yet, you can Google Kobayakawa Hideaki to see what he does.
Shogun: The Japanese version of Games of Thrones
Mmm, the opposite happens:
Shogun was published in 1975. The first tv series are from 1980.
GOT was published in 1995, first series in 2011.
GOT could be another western Sengoku drama.
Oooh, what an original take!
It isn't, almost nothing alike
I felt bad for the horse
Lol is it me or does Toranaga’s son looks more like his uncle? Another twist next eps? 🤣
lol but i mean this is possible tho, some people look more like their relatives than their own parents. like take drake's son for example, the boy looks like his grandma instead of his own father and mother
The name is Zataki not Saeki
Zataki isn't really an authentic Japanese name for the period, so that's why they changed it.
James Clavell had a lot of inaccuracies in his novel. The naming of characters was one of them.
Hey fx, I humbly suggest that you change the name of this video to "Toranaga's Dinner with Saeki" or "Toranaga and Saeki's Dinner," so as to not spoil it for people who have not seen the show.
Is saeki based on someone real or no?
