V12E18: Wandering the Outskirts of Taos

  • This week, we basecamp in the Jeep and the Revel outside of Taos, New Mexico, and explore Carson National Forest, and surrounding BLM land. I discuss strategies for finding connected campsites using GAIAGPS. I explore the low elevations of the Rio Grande Gorge in the Jeep, make a pit-stop in Questa for a flat-repair, and venture into the mountains above Red River. Featuring a variety of landscapes, from high-desert to alpine, and Antonio's Mexican Restaurant.

Chris, I’m from Glorieta, NM and we travel to Taos often; and I recognize some of the geography you drove and camped on. Best kept secret areas needing more visitors who can appreciate it; thanks for exposing New Mexico to your viewers! And yes NM is in the USA folks 😎

I spent a lot of summers in Red River and Taos. RR may look and act like a ski town, but the summer is BUSY! Lots of offroading, hiking, fishing, and mountain biking. I love that area of New Mexico.

I just completed every episode. I never thought a YT on 4 Wheeling would keep me interested, but this does. I’m a cyclist, mt. biker and gravel rider but still love watching an Orange Jeep out in the Outback. One of the best features is the fact that Chris gets out of the vehicle every chance he gets to explore on foot. I greatly admire that, it’s in keeping with Edward Abbey, who wrote in Desert Solitaire “You can't see anything from a car; you've got to get out of the goddamn contraption and walk, better yet crawl, on hands and knees, over the sandstone and through the thornbrush and cactus. When traces of blood begin to mark your trail, you'll see something, maybe.”

Yup! I poked a hole in my drivers rear while bombing down a rough gravel road for 8 miles. From the time my low tire light came on, and I switched screens to the 4 tire pressure display to the time I was back on the road was under 30 minutes. And that included 1/4 mile more of the gravel road before I was on pavement in a parking lot, as well as the use of an MV50 12v compressor (fairly slow fillup).
One and done. That happened on the morning after my first night on a 1 week trip. The plug is still in that tire holding air 100% after almost a year now.

Man, I gotta tell ya... My better half and I start our Sunday with your videos with our morning coffee in bed. And we hadn't seen Finnigan in a few Van episodes, and then when you guys were moving out of storage and went out of your way to bring the picture of Finn, we were starting to worry that he might have taken the big dirt nap. We were super happy to see him soaking up the sun in his little dog bed today!
On a separate note, I don't know how that metal cup bonging around on your roll cage doesn't drive you insane. I'd have hucked that thing into a gorge by now.
Also: You don't carry a tire plug kit? Especially since you already have the compressor, might get you out of a bind sometime. I've got the ARB kit and like it. Skookum tools and good rubber plugs. Since you maintain a good quality spare it's not as important and might not be worth the space in your gear, but don't know if you've ever experimented with one.
