  • The “Auschwitz album” photos are among the most iconic of Holocaust photographs, taken in Birkenau in 1944, during the deportation of the Hungarian Jews.
While little is known about the album and the reason it was made, a thorough study of its 197 photos, highlights various insights not only as to the possible purpose of the album, but also into the “Final Solution” implemented in Auschwitz in the spring of 1944.
Tal Bruttmann is a researcher with the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences sociales (EHESS), working on the various anti-Jewish policies implemented in France and on the Holocaust in Europe. He has published several books on the French administration role in the anti-Jewish policies during the Vichy period. His latest works are focused on Auschwitz and the Holocaust in Europe. This talk is based on his book analysing “Lili Jacob’s album” photos, Die fotografische Inszenierung des Verbrechens: Ein Album aus Auschwitz (with Christoph Kreutzmüller & Stefan Hördler).

Fascinating presentation. I cannot tell you how many times I have viewed photos from the Auschwitz Album, & how much they have impacted & haunted me. I have never viewed them in order, or thought about them being from multiple transports. Photo #61 - Half of the subjects face & torso are shown. However, what struck me most, are the eyes of the woman in front of the subject. The woman & wearing a white kerchief. Her eyes are full of fear, desperation, & pain. I have zoomed in on the photos several times, to identify individuals & details. I appreciate the way you focused the photos in various series. Great work. Very meaningful & inspirational.

Very interesting! The man speaking didn't have to feel rushed at all as far as I'm concerned. I could have listened to him for a long time without getting bored or tired. He had quite a number of keen insights which were fascinating to me as a student of the holocaust. Great video!

I always wonder what's going on in their minds. They must be wondering why they're being photographed even if they believe that they really have come to a work camp.
