Because blonde men aren't seen as "masculine" already, they're seen as more delicate, weak and effeminate. Combined with the homosexual/bisexual underpinnings of this story and you'll notice most people just don't want to see a "twink" looking Dorian they prefer a stronger personality and looks to make the character's descent all the more dramatic. His being blonde is like a confirmation bias that Dorian is weak. Also society's ideal of males in general is dark haired and Dorian being this intractable paragon, it makes sense he's portrayed in society's ideals of masculinity regardless of sdxuality hence why he looks best "dark". Reading Dorian, I felt the film adaptations got him better in terms of visual than Wilde did.

I'm a bit torn between Ben Barns and Reeve Carney. I personally think Ben was at his best before Dorian was corrupted. He played the innocence and purity so well. Meanwhile Reeve Carney's rendition is what I would expect Dorian to be like after some time, so sure of himself, and out of this world in a way.
Ben Barnes and Reeve Carney definitely have the best performances. Personally, I prefer Ben's performance because I love him as an actor. He always manages to convey a lot of emotions.
You guys should see Bosie Douglas portrayed by Jude Law in Wilde (1997). He’d be a perfect Dorian Gray if there were an adaptation in the 1990’s P/s: I love Ben Barnes’ portrayal most. Though he doesn’t have blonde hair and rosy cheeks like in the novel, his acting was excellent, especially the bright smile

Gotta admit he was the OG of this. But he didn't quite meet the imagination of a charismatic, rich, very fine young man. He only embodied Dorian as a character instead of a person. Ben Barnes really caught the charisma and the fine-ness of Dorian we imagine from the book. His eyes were reckless, his gait was naughty and hedonistic, his voice was young and exciting. Something that Hurd didn't exactly embody. But, I see that Barnes' version didn't show a change of pace and "mental aging" in Dorian's life. Something that, well, basically it was the gist of the book. Dorian's mental getting old, his evilness starting to build up, but his face and physique stayed the way as he was 20. If these 2 could combine, that'll be a damn good Dorian ❤ But these two, definetly.

Leonardo DiCaprio in his very young days ( days of the titanic) I think would have been perfect for the roll. He’s aged out of this roll for now. I unfortunately don’t keep up with new actors and actresses anymore. I did love the Penny Dreadfull series. Unfortunately I don’t know any of their real names . I had to look up Reeves Carney.

But…….the perfect man for the role of Dorian Gray based on how Oscar Wilde described him would have been Richard ( Dr. Kildare ) Chamberlain. A flawless beautiful blonde haired man. Had they done a remake of this movie in the early 60’s.
