The Censored Radiohead Song

- Sometime in 2017, a Radiohead music video disappeared from CZcams. This was the official video for "Pop is Dead", a song they've taken every effort to wipe from the internet.
Music used:
• Radiohead - My Iron Lu... - Hudba
Pop Is Dead is a glimpse into an alternate universe where Radiohead just carried on down that rock path.
and they hate it? more proof they are arrogant little entitled spoiled rotten brats.
Sigh....
where can i find the song?
@@googoowagagaga8178 there is one on internet archive
people would eat up pop is dead if it was a blur song LMAO
i love blur so i can confirm this, i feel so called out rn 💀💀
@@wm8840 in a way Blur would do this stuff better. I imagine Country House by Radiohead may be equally as cringe, somehow, they are just the wrong band for it. It would be like Stanley Kubrick's "Monty python and the holy grail" or something. Not that Blur are a total comedy band of course, one of my favourites is "out of time", "coffee and tv"
Why someone would say something so controversial Yet so brave
Maybe Oasis instead. I don't think Blur would've ever been keen on a song like this either.
Albarn was always very subtle in his lyrics and their music albeit simple, well crafted.
Pop is Dead is just plain stupid and boring.
The ultimate irony is that had they stuck with the Pablo Honey sound and keep making songs like Pop Is Dead, the band would've died by back catalogue
I unironically love Pop Is Dead, and while I understand why many RH fans don't like it, it will always be a fun, upbeat jokey song to me.
Yeah, I love their earlier stuff even though they tend to not care for it as much.
Its the over indulgent artsy,im better than my past ego trip.
I like radiohead songs for there rock beats but the others are pretty good.
It's just that pop is dead for me is on the same level as just and other hit singles in my opinion.
@@markivy3451 I would usually agree with you if it was nearly any other band, but RH has earned every ounce of credit & the Right to say whatever they want! Theyre truly one of the most original Alternative Rock Band's ever! The fact that they are still killing it after 30+ year's & arguably creating a lot of music that tops their old stuff. Only a handful of bands can claim such an Amazing feat!
@@rccarothers all well and good, doesnt really affect their fan base. Just a bunch of whining, because its not really a bad song for the time. Giving them extra leeway on dumb junk is a sissy move. I like many bands and music, that i would not agree with the self righteous horse hockey. Cant be real, being most people who have any fans look down on them. Example, under the bridge from red hot chilli peppers almost didnt make it onto the album. Most everyone loves that song.
It’s actually a great song and video. They can’t seem to write a bad song. It’s a curse. They are doomed to be awesome.
great post!!!they are indeed awesome!!!
Sorry but no. I love Radiohead but most of that album is really awful.
@@RafaelPernia what album? it's a single
@@RicardoAlonso77 I guess he means Pablo Honey. I agree that the first half is extremely weak except for "Creep", and the second half picks up a little bit, but overall Pablo Honey is a poor attempt at britpop/post grunge. I mean, bands like Weezer and Oasis put out masterpieces of their genre, Pablo Honey pales in comparison. Its saving grace is definitely "Creep", and a track like "Blow Out" is the first indication of what's to come in albums like The Bends and OK Computer.
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266The first song on Pablo Honey, You, is amazing and absolutely one of their best songs. It just took me about 15 years of listening to that album to realize it.
While it might not be as extreme of a case as “Pop is Dead” I’ve also noticed that the official music video for “Anyone Can Play Guitar” was made widely unavailable at some point around early 2020. I tried uploading it to my CZcams channel in early 2021 but it instantly got a copyright claim. While I understand the band being embarrassed about their early years I think these erasures are a little too far.
The beach house performance probably traumatised them forever in retrospect
@@gesaltcrystals2233 and yet you can still find that
Yeah, that really sucks. I don’t understand why they do this. How long till they delete creep 😅
@@riahlexingtonthey were probably bribed not to or something. Plus i think they're beginning to grow back into not despising Creep specifically, but who knows
Anyone Can Play Guitar is the single that when the video played on MTV’s 120 Minutes, made me go out and buy Pablo Honey. I was 14 and with a strict policy of never buying a CD unless there were 2 cool singles minimum.
Im so happy that this video exist. Im a huge Radiohead fan, and I never hear about this thing before...Amazing video!
Thank you! I'm glad the video was able to introduce you to something new!
Same I’m seeing Thom in November!
Sameeeeee
Radiohead became too ethereal, and floated away from my interest. NEXT!
@@jessicaj2017 is RADIOHEAD on tour?but not in europe isn't it?
Man, how does this have below 200 views. This really is a high quality video, especially for a first upload
Thanks! Looks like it's reached over 200 views since your comment haha
@@cloudstie a bit more ;)
Because it was his first video, use your brain bro
@@alwaysabiggafish3305 it had been 2 weeks since this video was uploaded and it still was below 200 views, videos of this quality tend to do relatively good in the algorithm even if it’s a first upload
77 thousand views now :')
to be honest im not sure they still hold onto the idea that "pop is dead," if anything rather the opposite. they havent shied away from writing poppy songs, its just that they are very well-written and meticulously detailed pop songs and not naff bargain bin alt rock. thom himself has expressed appreciation for pop artists like billie eilish. if anything they probably think the sentiment of "pop is dead" is just cringe and thats why they hate it
I get it, it’s like the same as when Fall Out Boy claimed to be “saving rock and roll” when ironically they couldn’t be further from playing rock music at the time. Seriously made me hate a band that I was only indifferent about before. The arrogance to say that your band is saving rock and roll while writing poppy teen songs without guitar parts makes no sense to me.
@@scottoleson1997 money, greed, being entitled. That'll do it.
Yeah I think Thom and/or the other band members just think it's way too on the nose and not actually a poignant statement on any level. Still, I don't think they should go out of their way to delete the video from the internet.
The song itself is a pop song...therein lies the irony. But Radiohead were always an ironic band. The Bends was dedicated to the memory of Bill Hicks...
In every era of music you have people clamoring to proclaim that music is dead…it’s ruined…the industry killed it! Nas - “Hip hop is dead”. Radiohead - “Pop is dead”. Gene Simmons - “Rock is dead”. And just this year there were a round of articles claiming that hip hop was dead again because the genre had reached its 50th anniversary. It’s a pretty silly cliche at this point
3:17 literal virgin squad 😭
the struggles of being a radiohead fan😭😭
Amazing footage
It took so many context clues for me to realize that this isn't ACTUALLY a group of Radiohead fans (or at least not exclusively).
If you’ve seen Meeting People is Easy then that documentary makes so much more sense after watching this. They were so out of place and after OK Computer Thom finally felt he could be himself on Kid A, a person who he didn’t even know existed when he wrote Pop is Dead.
It's a great pop song...that's the irony. I think the problem is their "humor" went over many of their early fan's heads, so the single fell flat, tonally. No idea why they would try to erase its history now though...they're well past the sounds of the mid-90s now
They seem pretty embarrassed by a lot of their 90s stuff, perhaps for good reason, but it is a bit over the top to try and wipe a bunch of their old stuff from history
@@cloudstie For some reason Radiohead never accepted their own "pop" side.. Always so serious
@@olympian3 Thom Yorke said he loves his band because they write pop songs. Even though they’re mainly alt. rock💢
@@cloudstie comes across as spoiled, arrogant, and a spit in the face of fans.
its like when someone founds your old deviantart account lmao
Been waiting for someone to talk about this! I actually unironically love this song and their performances of the song, I think I will genuinely pass out of shock and laughter if they randomly play this live again after all these years
Really great video, deserves more subs, and you defs earned one 👍🏻 Here at 200 subs
Thank you! I hope Thom and Jonny bring it back during The Smile tour
It’s no masterpiece but it’s still a fun Pop Punk song.
Calling this song erased from the internet is like when someone is on the news saying they were cancelled.
Yeah, but this video is still ok in some sense
I noticed recently that Pop Is Dead had disappeared! Weird!!
Love your videos, Mr. Bennett!
Pop is dead is a song i ironically love so much i loop to loving it unironically, it's such an oddity, and the music video is probably the 2nd funniest thing radiohead has ever done (after mtv beach house, obviously)
yea and thats obviously why thome hates it so much. he got bullied so hard in school , that his ego inflated to the jupiter size and now he has to show everyone how "special" he really is, that he cant take a laugh at himself. truth is he is and always was a creep , a weirdo
Song is amazing period, deleting it seems surprisingly immature
Ikr? Even if they think it's 100% awful they could just own up to it and move on, they don't have to play it again but trying to erase the existence of a bad song is kinda more embarrassing than just having a bad song lmao
I think the reason for the complete removal is because it was only released with the Pablo honey reissue that was not okayed by the band like the bests of album
@@jamesenglish1857 But it was released as a stand alone single in the first place.
Erasing your past is exactly the opposite of "getting better" imo. Also streisand effect, always nice to see that happening.
I didn't even know it existed, but because of their actions i actively want to watch it.
Well, it's the first google result... so yeah, that didn't work out so good now, did it?
The older I've gotten, the more Pablo Honey has become my favorite album
lots of radiohead modern "fans" that tend to bash pablohoney werent even alive at that time so they dont even understand the significance of early 90s rock music. classic hipster syndrome, when they feel special coz they deny something which is mainstream like "creep" but overprise barly listenable exeprimental tracks
Yo, awesome video!
Was rewatching the Live in Astoria(1994) and wanted to see that video again for the weird but very catchy song! Couldn't find it on CZcams, but came across your great video. Good luck in developing your channel!
Thanks! I guess Pop is Dead was too catchy for Radiohead. Glad you enjoyed the video, I hope to make more like it in the future!
I actually put Pablo Honey as one of my favorite Radiiohead albums. I love all of Radiohead's discography, but this album's subject matter meant a lot to me. Creep, Stop Whispering, Vegetable, Prove Yourself, I Can't, Lurgee, Blow Out all hit deep as a teenager who felt lost. I only now know I was coping with neglect at the time. Those songs pushed me forward. Makes me kinda sad to see the band feel so strongly about banishing songs from it.
Greatest song ever written by human beings
I hope this song is the only remaining evidence of human civilization after the apocalypse
this song should've been included in that disk they sent to space for aliens to find
The lads take themselves WAY too seriously some times.
Great video. Loved this song, never understood the hate. I'd get why they as a band dislike it but scrubbing it from existence is a bit much
Very interesting, glad this got recommended to me. This satisfies the Radiohead brain itch. Looking forward to more of your uploads
Great video. Maybe I’m misinterpreting it though, but the claim you’re making at the end about Radiohead making something “better” than pop, I feel, is the exact attitude that makes them so embarrassed at this song. Not every song has to be of a great substance. If it’s enjoyable, and you create memories of it with your friends, I can’t think of anything more meaningful than pop music.
Edit: just wanted to clarify, again I thought this was a great video and I can’t wait to see more, I’m just trying to contribute to the discussion
yeah
so in other words arrogant shitbags, acting entitled, whiny and arrogant? color me not surprised.
Good point! Pop is Dead is a pretty fun song. I definitely got up on my high horse at the end there, didn't mean to be pretentious. Thanks for the comment!
ur going places !!!! this video was great in so many ways i would love to see more from u
Sick video dude! It's cool to see a fellow CZcamsr making videos about Radiohead. I'm excited to see what other videos you have in store!
Great video, man. I hope you continue making more videos. It'd be good to see more stuff from you!
Great video! Love the production quality, keep it up man
Amazing quality, I’m truly surprise and glad this got into my recommendations
Thank you!
Nice vid! Also how about covering another censored Radiohead song like Anyone Can Play Guitar and Stop Whispering. They also removed the music videos for these songs
anyone can play guitar was one of my favorite songs…have they actually canceled it??
@@kbrown3787 no they’re taking down the mv’s, I’ve seen pop is dead before but not these ones
Thanks! Anyone Can Play Guitar would make for a fun video, especially the MTV Beach House version
They took down the video for Anyone Can Play Guitar a few years ago, but its still up on dailymotion
the last third of the video (from a 4 minute mark) is a pure "listening to a person huff on farts" experience. That was beautiful, thank you for that.
lol i mainly wanted an excuse to rail at weezer
@@cloudstie 😭 they have like two or three good tracks hating
@@cloudstie also their paranoid android cover is terrible
@@cloudstie Look I'm not a big Weezer fan (only listened to like 5 of there albums and kinda ditched them) but Weezer (2016) IS RIGHT THERE
This video is awesome. Such good quality, defo deserves more views
In Geneva it was "one more line of coke for Phil Collins", and he dedicated the song to "Phil Collins, tory wanker". Not sure how many of the Swiss audience he expected to know what a tory wanker was.
Why wouldn’t they know?
Those words aren’t exclusive to the uk.
Swiss are pretty observant. They've dealt with Tory Wankers on ski holidays for decades.
@@justincoleman3805 I didn't know what a Tory was until twitter discourse became a thing and twitter arguments started getting screnshotted and posted elsewhere.
I think this channel is gonna blow up soon
Hopefully lol
Well done, new fan here, hope to see more interesting videos like this
Can't wait to see more of your videos!
Man I never knew they hated this song so much. As a musician I definitely understand how you basically hate anything you wrote thats more than 6 months old... but it's really a fun song, if not exactly in the upper echelon of their catalog. Seems like a huge overreaction.
only one video thus far and it's a banger, can't wait for a hundred more
Thank you! I'll try my best to make more videos like this!
Turns out a video about Radiohead’s most embarrassing song is a huge burn of Weezer.
i think it’s a far greater statement to keep the song and music video up to show where they’ve come from. how they’ve graduated from silly, schlocky rockers in university to some of the greatest artists our world has seen.
radiohead has always been about doing the unexpected, being the unpredictable, and, yes, while i can understand why the band don’t enjoy the song or video, i think it completely negates the beautiful lesson it holds in showing the band’s growth into musical maturity. radiohead don’t always have to be serious-they’re really fucking funny-and it’s honestly a shame they’ve done so much to scrub this song from history… but how can you kill what’s already dead?
I agree, radiohead is such a special band, and this is just typical rock star behavior. I guess you can't be one of the best bands in human history without having a somewhat inflated ego...
dude, I've been a radiohead fan for 20 years, how the hell have i never heard of this lol
Creator, thank you for putting together this excellent video!
Really good video! Please continue making videos they’re really good!
Thank you! I'll do my best!
That mtv beachhouse show was peak 90s, always takes me there lol
Just realised I never even knew it had a video, so they did a good job of keeping it quiet for decades...until this video
It's not their greatest track, but not their worst, either. And as noted, the spiralling guitar line is vintage Greenwood genius.
I wanted to listen to it the other day so I searched for it on Spotify and couldn't find it. Thanks for providing an explanation!
love the weird fishes/arpeggi 8-bit in the background.
Subbed and excited to see your future uploads

Wow this is so cool. I had no idea about this. Great video!
Great video, can't believe this video only has 2k views.
damn incredible first video, big big props!!
Had Radiohead been one hit wonders, this would've been Todd's 'failed follow up' segment.
I found the video for the song - possibly on Vimeo, can't remember - searching for Wayland's Smithy, which is where the video was shot, and I'd just visited that morning. It's a short walk from the Uffington White Horse, which is where Cloudbusting video was filmed.
Great vid, your channel should be bigger
Thom Stalin: Mr. Pop isn’t dead, he never existed in the first place.
Love the love that you’ve given!
I'm really glad that there is a live version of this on Live at Astoria. The greatest encore i've heard was Strret Spirit, Pop is Dead, Blowout. Honestly, don't know why it works.
It works because it's Radiohead
this was my ringtone for at least 2 years in high school. good times.
Well made video love how concise and we'll edited it is. A shitty version of this video would be 10 minutes long milking the topic of everything it's worth. Also funny pictures to back up what ur saying. All in all keep it up excited to see more
The video for Stop Whispering (U.S. Version) also seems to have been given a similar treatment.
The same thing happened with the US version of the video clip for high and dry
This is one of my favorite songs
Haha, I remember back on the Radiohead forums online in the 90s, on Ateaseweb and Greenplastic, if I recall, I remember people were using the Pop Is Dead gifs as avatars to troll the Radiohead fans who took Radiohead a little too serious perhaps. Probably because Thom looks so damn ridiculous. I also think the message was a bit absurd. I remember interviews where Thom said back then that he really thought popmusic had died, or that it had no more future. Not the most accurate prediction, I guess.
I had not even heard about this song before today, when it popped up in the joke "worst set list ever" video.
Well, I remember, that when I started to listen to Radiohead, I read the article about "Pop Is Dead" on Wikipedia and simply searched for the song on site, that at the time I used to download music and it was there, so I downloaded it. I love that song, but I haven't known that there was a music video for this song and that the band hated it way more than "Creep". Thanks for this video.
PS. In my country "Creep" is still sometimes played on some pop/rock radio stations and I personally think it's a bit funny and stupid at the same time.
Creep is simply their best song. They hate it because of that - they feel they went so far ahead musically, yet it still remains their best song :)
great video essay! nice bg music as well
I’ve boasted about it before, but I have their DVD with all the music videos pre TKOL era, and Pop Is Dead somehow made it on there. Feels like I’m on a power trip knowing I can watch it anytime I want to even though the band wished they’d never fucking made that song lmao.
i own that dvd as well:D joke is on them:D
THAT RADIOHEAD MOSHPIT
I weirdly forget Pablo Honey exists and I've never checked that album out. The Bends drew me in and I've loosely followed their stuff since but it's never dawned on me to check out that first album..
It's a very different album, but there's actually some great stuff on there - 'You' and 'Blow Out' are amazing songs.
In comparison to their MTV Beachhouse performance, Pop is Dead was pretty great
MTV Beachhouse was a philosophical masterpiece and the band at their peak, the two are on completely different levels
I quite like Pop is Dead. It's just a what it is... a pop punk track from a young band.
The reason is simple, the rise of drm gave them the control that they didn't have with creep
This just in- you can type in radioheads Pop is Dead on CZcams and not only listent to the original album version, but music video as well.
Started watching this and stopped at 20 seconds - went and Googled 'Pop Is Dead' and just watched it all - not that dead IMHO. What did surprise me was that I didn't recognise it, even though I have some official VHSs kicking around.
All bands have a few weird oddball songs man. Must just be one of those things you'd have to see through their eyes to understand it
I bet this is an "inside joke" they're playing with all of us.
Please make more videos.. Well done! Instant subscriber👍
What a brilliant video, thanks!!
Subbed, keep making content like this pls
Thanks, I'll do my best!
Side note: IDK how many know that their concept album Kid A was denied by their label to be put out & marketed so RH did it all on their own & it turned out to be one of their most popular albums period! I think I literally wore out 2 CDs of that album from playing it non stop!
i just found out found this song from this video and honestly I wish they didn't scrub the song from existence. wouldn't keeping the song be a little humbling yknow? If it was on streaming services and stuff it would really emphasise just how far radio head has grown as a band so it's quite a shame they try to erase it from existence
I think they should just chill out.
The pop is dead video was one of the first RH video i watched among Paranoid android and There there 240p back in the early 2010s when i was introduced to them 😞
never wanted anything to do with them after that beach house performance.... and then OK computer came out
