  • Are you ready for this how to video?! This one was pretty long and tricky. In the end doing this Spider-Man wasn't too bad at all and I'm glad I did it. I hope this helps you out there if you're wanting to do the same thing. Let me know in the comments if you end up trying this!

    Wow!!! This came out WAY better than I expected. I knew the paint on paint would be an issue but I'm shocked how easily you came up with ways to work around the challenge. Great job, dude!! I'm curious to see if the same strategies could be applied to VHS Jean Grey or if she would essentially require painting.

      Thanks so much! I'll take another look at Jean Grey, but everything I've seen says that she basically has to be painted. At least parts of her do. So maybe that will be the impetus for me to do some paint matching.

    Dude! I was waiting for this video for the last few days, and you did not disappoint! I think you pretty much aced this one! You're certainly getting more confidence at this!
    I think that this Spider-Man--possibly the most daunting cel shaded figure you've tackled so far-- is a very intimidating figure because of how the shading is laid on. With the exception of the spider on the back, I think you really killed it, dude! I'm so proud of you! I've done a few paint removals with acetone, and I was wondering if I'd have even been willing to try this one or not. Your bravery inspired me to seek this figure out and try it! lol. Did you find that the ziploc bagging trick combined with the Tamiya tape worked well for you? It always seems to help me, because I know that if my fingers are left (heh) holding the bag, I'm not smudging acetone someplace on the figure, and I know that those areas are protected!
    One of the reasons I prefer the "two swipes with a q-tip and out" method is because acetone will continue to dissolve your paint, the more you keep rubbing at it. Two swipes limits the amount of acetone, and you can come back to the same spot with a new q-tip and do two more swipes until it's gone. This method sounds wasteful, but it is a bit more effective on those bigger areas. You can bare down just a little on those bigger, island areas of tampo (like on the legs), and cut through things a lot faster. Also the two swipe method keeps the loose paint from getting spread around everywhere, making the area messy and spread out. Just remember to swipe once, rotate the head of the q-tip to the side you didn't use, then use that on your second pass. Then you can flip and dip the other end of the q-tip and do the two swipes with that one too. Then you throw that q-tip away and get another. It will reduce paint/acetone smudging and contamination to a smaller area to work within, and provide you with cleaner and possibly clearer results. No matter what you do, you're going to need to touch some things up, and a clear coat to restore the sheen will be necessary to even out the new matted areas where paint has been removed.

      Many thanks as always, Loston! Yeah it definitely seems much more intimidating than I think it was. Or maybe I'm just getting more confident! haha!
      Yeah I think the bag+tape was a fantastic combination and I think something I should have been doing since the beginning. It's definitely going into my modding "toolkit".
      And yeah totally. I think if/when I do another de-cel shading that I'll see about using your method on a torso where it's a bit harder to remove paint. Thanks for the reminder!

      I do wonder though if they might do another version of this for the VHS line that they are doing for the animated Spider-Man series. While this is technically that Spider-Man, the packaging doesn't work at all with the VHS line, which is sort of the main point of the gimmick of that line. So it could be possible!

    Once you work on a spot, for example the arm. Are you cleaning then rinsing it in warm water?

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  Před 7 měsíci +1

      So when I make these paint removal videos I try to cut out as little as possible and instead just speed up the camera so you can see(as much as possible at least) if I'm cleaning in between. I would say it's a good idea to rinse in between since you could end up leaving some chemical on the figure for extended periods when you didn't intend to. While it's dramatically slower than regular acetone for removing paint, it still has similar properties of destruction if you leave it sitting on the figure long enough. I hope that helps!

      Yes it will work, but please keep in mind that you have to move very quickly if you use it. Acetone is very corrosive if you let it sit for too long. • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  Před rokem

      Thanks I'm glad you found it useful! How did you leave scratches? The chemical shouldn't have been that corrosive at all to damage it like that. Feel free to share links/pictures if you like, but depending on how bad it is you could probably just use 2000 grit sandpaper to try to smooth it out.

      @@ComicallyToys I goof'd. So when I tried removing the paint I was using rubbing alcohol. I went back through your other videos (The Storm one) and discovered that rubbing al was not the way to go, lol. Thank again for videos and tutorials on this process, really appreciate it!

    @dreamybulllxxx Před rokem +1

    hey, i removed a lot of the cel shading with nail polish remover. a few damage spots on the blue but i was planning on painting after removing anyways (will be buying paint tomorrow). i know you said you aren’t great with the paint matching/painting over, but do you have any tips? i’ve sanded down the parts im going to mask the figure up (obviously). this is for the blue bits only but i will be touching up a tiny bit of the red that’s kinda dulled out on the chest

    • @ComicallyToys
      @ComicallyToys  Před rokem +1

      So the dullness definitely comes from the nail polish remover/acetone. I'd recommend for the future that you switch to the brush cleaner that I link in the video as it'll not be nearly as harsh.
      In terms of paint matching, the only real tip I have is to bring the figure with you to your local hobby shop to look for the right(or as close to) color that you can. I've tried getting paints to match VHS Jean Grey and I've gotten close-ish, but I'm still not 100% happy with what I've found. I at first tried matching against the printed color sample, and I DO think I matched that well, but the actual color of the paint ended up looking different. So if you're able to just open the cap/lid of the paint and compare it to your figure then you'll get a much better idea of how well the color matches. I was hoping that maybe the color would dry a little differently, but it's really the same color wet as it is dry so keep that in consideration too.
      If you're going to actually start with a color that is close and try to match then I'd probably get black and white as well to try to darken/lighten slowly to try to get it that much closer to the right color. I'm not sure if it's easier to go dark or light though. Haha maybe this should just be another video I make!
