  • Whilst at LCMP I thought this was the perfect place to go around and ask what others bring on their big trips. There must have been at least a dozen Y62 Patrols here and I find out what is likely to break and what spares are needed for a Simpson Desert or LCMP 4x4 trip

That’s a really good point he made about sucking in the mist following trucks too close 👍

Mike Wasowski unfortunately when your in multi lane fwys your surrounded by traffic and spray. I needed to try overtake road trains from 100m behind so it’s just a shitty situation. The V8 wants to suck lots of air and water on full throttle so it’s just not fit for purpose.. seems to be a problem more on the Y62’s at the moment.

George Cvetkovic good point you raise. The little water drain reed valve in the bottom of the air box won’t even work as the mist won’t coalesce into droplets until it hits the filter, which is too late. You almost need to treat it like oily vapour catch cans. If you could centrifuge the incoming air with a set of vanes in the intake pipe, then the mist might coalesce and run down the walls into the box and out drain reed valve. Hmmmmmm

Mike Wasowski yes correct....totally agree! Unfortunately TJM would need to recall the current snorkels on the market, as they’ve also removed the product from sale in Australia in the interim..

On all my long distance trips I’ve taken a full service kit, trolley jack and jack stands(cos safety first), full tool kit and a new one I’ll be adding is a tube of araldite. Busted my rad last trip and the araldite got me all the way home again after I glued up the tank

When we done the simpson, i had to spare tyres, tyre repair kit, tyre levers, shit loads of cable ties, duck tape ( loads of it ) electrical cleaner, wd40, spare fuses, cash, tools and plenty of ratchet straps.

This is a topic that I am obsessed with. Weight is a huge consideration when it comes to spares and most of our trips tend to be no less than 7 days and often up to 4 weeks. Getting the balance right with spares has given me many headaches over the years. The only thing that actually gave way on the 4x4 was an LBJ and that resulted in the wheel falling off so no number of spares would have got us out of that one. (Prado 90 series owners need to know that LBJ failure is a common problem so get them inspected regularly.)

Another good informative video With my old 80 series it's more to do with wiring. Having the LS3 in it. Having to fix up the auto electricians stuff ups

200 series here... carry fuel filter and spare air filter.. k & n filter is what i have atm. TJM airtec snorkel, ram head, over screen. havent had any water ingress as yet after 3 years. As zoezoe610 mentioned, i also have a sock...the pre cleaner....( unifilter one ) the best thing you will ever buy.... if you havent used one, you will never know the amount of shit they catch. I had mine on for 11000 kms.. birdsville track.. qld dust... over to wa. the fuckin shit that gets caught was unreal.

5 minute Arildite and selection of zip ties. The windscreen wipers in heavy rain swipe the water into that design of snorkel they sit to close to the body and suck the water that trying to go off the screen.

I drive a 200 and they are known for dust ingress getting through filter seal and through the panel itself.
I went to a uni filter which stops the dust, do the Y62's get and fine dust in the lid of the air box ? No issues with the snorkel and because water crossings a re rare I leave the drain open in the bottom of the air box and have a snorkel sock as well if needed. On the side I think it is good to take one axle stand to use with the jack.

I do take unifilter pre clean 44 / 3 for long trips. I don’t carry anything to refurbish them and just use & throw. Y62 S5 with Safari snorkel

I searched which parts are recommended to take along on a jeep trip. 10 minutes into this video, I realized this video was about Toyotas, and I was wasting my time.
