      Herbert Lippert is one of the best known tenors in the world. He is also a pianist and a painter.

    I had the privilege of singing almost every Handel oratorio as well as Schmidt‘s several times with my choir and with Herbert Lippert as a soloist. I like both composers, of course as representants of two epoches.

    Considering the history behind the Oratorio, written in 1937, this is a modern day masterpiece. It remains loyal to historical formats but reflects the idiosyncrasy of its time.

    If you like the Music of Franz Schmidt (which is extraordinary).....you might enjoy the recent release of the complete symphonies on the Accentus Label:
    czcams.com/video/PKs7wQbKmVI/video.html
    "... landmark release"
    "Jonathan Berman, à propos de Franz Schmidt", Jean Pierre Tribot, Crescendo Magazine, Nov 2023
    “[…] None of the [previous recordings] has managed to delve with total success into Schmidt's elusive universe, so dependent on the Viennese or Wiener Klangstil sound style......... This is perhaps the most convincing approach to the composer's musical universe. .........This is evident in the vital thrust of the First, the fluidity of the Second's variations, the elegant contrapuntal warp of the Third (the composer's favourite) and the emotional catharsis of the Fourth, to which he adds an exquisite showcases the symphonic richness of the opera Notre Dame.”
    Scherzo, Pablo L. Rodríguez, 30th November 2023

    The choir is a bit sleeping, missing energy is not going to the extremes. Pronounciation is a problem as well. The performancers miss to the get to the genius point of the music. The Jonannes should be a "Heldentenor" instead of a "Lyrischer Tenor" as Schmidt requires from the score.

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer Před 3 lety +4

      Absolutely not. Lyrischer Tenor is exactly what this role is and should be. Like the Evangelist in the Bach Oratorios.

    The Jesus Freaks may enjoy this but it seems to me much do about nothing: nothing I heard here is memorable. Contrast that with, say Handel.

      Religion must have little to do with it. I'm atheist and love this oratorio over any Handel. I find it dramatic, terrifying, and yes, very memorable!
