Ok first of all, let's just get something out of the way to begin with; the "security" BS touted about on these cameras. This is just a fear mongering marketing tactic, giving false belief to some added feature that's there, that really shouldn't even be mentioned. People aren't using 802.11G routers from 2004 with non-encrypted networks to run their WiFi--it's 2024. Even if you're running a router that's a decade old, your network is most likely using WPA2 encryption (and WiFi 6E & 7 will be using WPA3). That's not something that's easy to break into, in fact it's almost impossible, and I'd bet a thousand bucks the very last thing anyone needs to worry about is a band of "ultra hackers" looking to setup shop around the backyard, running some 36hr long hack fest from a tent with their laptops, attempting to exploit the Wi-Fi network, join, and then hang around all in effort to watch the baby monitor. Like, WHAT!? Is that what anyone actually fears? If you're worried about that happening, chances are there's larger issues at stake in the family than baby monitor security. 😂
Anyways, I'm a web camera guru and lately found myself tinkering with the baby monitors to see what they can do. I picked up the Hubble+ cams w the battery powered display/controller, because I was interested in a remote pan/tilt cam setup. The first thing I did with one was set it up outside about 5ft high on a stand, then started walking down the extremely long driveway with the wireless monitor/display to check the reach. I was actually surprised--I walked over 900ft line-of-sight (no walls or obstacles in between) and was still getting a solid connection to the Hubble. At about 950ft I realized that there was a little lag, about 2 seconds worth, but was still obtaining full image quality with what I could see. I had tried this before with other cameras years ago, carrying a Wi-Fi router connected to a 12V battery powering the router and wired camera, and I started getting WiFi connection drops at about 250ft line of sight. That was with a 2.4ghz router that wasn't cheap at that time, with fairly large omni antennas, so I must admit I'm impressed with the ranges these little things are achieving just between devices that don't look like they would beat a multi antenna router to phone setup. They definitely got that going. Now, put a wall in between, and there's no way you'll achieve such ranges. I can tell by the way the signal starts to get fuzzy at about 950ft-975ft that with any obstacles, that distance will be cut short.
Moving on, as with any camera, the lens plays a part into the device performance. A bigger lens will gather more light, and potentially give a better quality of image at the image sensor. The cameras at Target, they are green box Leap Frogs, those appear to have slightly better stock lenses, and I'm going to pick one up and try it out to see how it fares. The 1080P model shows a 3.6mm lens spec on the front, and while that's nothing too special as far as security cameras go, for a baby monitor it would seem to have a slight edge over the others just from what I can gather by looking at the objective lenses of other monitor cameras.
That leads to something else I found interesting at Target. The Infant Optics DXR-8 pan/tilt camera uses a threaded in front lens with M12 thread. Well as a matter of fact, M12 size camera lens sets are sold very cheap online, with different abilities such as wide angle ("fish eye" style, that I'm not exactly fond of), and telescopic--which means you could replace the objective lens on that camera, swap in others, and actually customize the ability the camera has when viewing. A good telescopic lens might actually provide a good quality zoom effect with narrow field of view that could be desirable for some to have, instead of being stuck with whatever is built into the camera. I'm definitely going to experiment with one for my own uses and see how it performs with such lenses installed.

thank you so much!!, what about the non wifi monitor signal strength? what if between the livingroom and our baby bedroom you have like 3 walls? will it have a suficient strong signal? to watch it with no issues?

Glad it helped! Hmm I can’t say with 100% confidence, but I am pretty sure the non wifi monitor would have a better chance in this scenario than the wifi monitor, they’re really robust!

Okay this is going to sound weird but I have a baby gecko and they're active at night, i work nights, so i need a monitor that i can record his activity when im gone so i can make sure hes moving and not lethargic. I don't need anything fancy, i don't have WiFi. Preferably i just need something that will record on an SD card possibly. Ive looked at security cameras and thats way too much as far as equipment and clouds and subscriptions.

Was trying to research something for you that will meet your needs, you might be able to get a cellular service camera system. I’m not so sure how those work though so might be worth researching a bit more. Hope this helps!
