Knowledge is knowing that Frankenstein is not the monster.
Wisdom is knowing that Frankenstein is the monster.
Now that's a serious quote !
That is both deep and true.
I slow clap at your comment and give you a thumbs up. Well done sir. Well. Done.
Beautiful.

"THAT IS FROM ONE TREE HILL!"
-John Green
ALL PRAISE GABE
just to start the misquotation trend i will quote him with "THAT IS FROM A HILL" - John Green
"THAT IS FROM TREE ONE HILL"

KaiGTB -Michael Scott
Correction: "THAT TREE IS FROM ONE HILL"
-Green John
reminds me of "May the force be ever in your favor!" - Dumbledore (Lord of the rings) or "Don't believe everything you read on the internet" - Abraham Lincoln.
estherrawr ok...i'll admit it...I almost nerd raged on you really hard till I saw the Lincoln quote. well played, well played.
@@ericsmith1508 same
LOL! I laughed so hard reading this that my dentures went flying into my fish tank.
My brain hurts now. :-)
"Henry David Thoreau never said anything in 13 words that could be said in 80."
This. This times a thousand...
-Hank Green just kidding
"Don't believe facebook quotations"
Napoléon Bonaparte
Now I'm going to look at the sign in my history teacher's room that says "be the change you wish to see in the world" and think, *you sit on a throne of lies.*
In Breaking Bad Jesse never says "Yeah, science bitch!" It goes more like. "Yeah Mr. White. Yeah science!"
"They see me rollin. They hatin. Patrolling. They tryin to catch me ridin dirty"
-John Green
John Green also never wrote "I am in love with places I've never been and people I've never met." That was written by a nerd fighter a couple years ago. DFTBA is also something that was thought up by a nerd fighter. But Hank and John have said it many times, so if you quote them you're probably good.
"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
- John Green
+Adam Stansbury Oppenheimer, wasn't it?, having translated it himself from Sanskrit.
Every Episode it sounds like he says "Thanks for watching menopause" ..
Moronic idiot! 🙄😒
That's what you got out of this?
@@kuhnhan apparently my priorities were somewhere else 7 years ago
"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you cleanse them in atomic fire, then you win."
Ghandi from Civ?
Layorannay
Pretty much. Or at least what happens when someone applies the misquote to that take on him.
When you have him in your game and you get democracy you shit your pants and run
@@Layorannay no no I believe Azula, from Avatar: The Last Airbender said that 🤔
Another interesting one is the poem often attributed to Roald Dahl.
"My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night
But ah my foes, and oh my friends -
It gives a lovely light..."
This is in fact written by Edna St. Vincent, not Roald Dahl. However, it has been said that this poem was a motto that Roald lived by.
haha I remember that! It was printed on the last page of my old Roald Dahl books. That must be why people associate it with him. Including 9 year old me.
We studied that poem in English in grade 8.
I think that's actually Emily Dickinson's. It can, after all, be sung to the tune of "The Yellow Rose of Texas."
The actual transcription is 'Houston, we've had a problem' which kind of sounds more badass, right?
True but Kirk dose say "Scotty, beam me up." So well, the quote passes.
02:02
The actual quote is "Hey Houston! We've had a problem here."
"Thoreau never said anything in 13 words that could be said in 80."
My favorite joke of the episode.
I'll add two:
"Curiosity killed the cat" is only half of the saying, the other half is "but satisfaction brought it back"
And the original quote of "blood is thicker than water" is "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb"
"the blood..." that's a good clarification because the former doesn't seem to mean anything, but if one were to guess, they'd probably guess that it means the opposite of the original. Thus, that is the worst kind of misquotation. Except, it looks like a situation where everyone was so familiar with the quote that a shortened version was workable.
@TheNuclearNoodle:. And, exactly what does that mean??? I get so tired of people quoting the wrong one....esp. family, (i.e. in-laws, I can't stand)!!!
@@Melinda8162 , to me it appears to be saying that one should be more loyal to the religious sect (or perhaps covenant refers to any cult or order that one has taken to with all seriousness) than to family members
Obi-wan does say "May the force be with you" its in Revenge of the Sith, where he leaves Anakin to fight General Grievious, Anakin says "Obi-Wan...May the Force be with you" and Obi-Wan replies, "Good-bye old friend, and May the Force be with you"......unless he just means in the original films or something :/
Yes. That's where people originally thought it came from.
The prequels sucked anyways
In the original trilogy the only characters I know that said, "May the force be with you," are Han Solo and Luke Skywalker. What Obi-Wan said was, "The force will be with you always."
"I'm in love with cities I've never been to and people I've never met."
"A man should not be judged by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character"
- Adolf Hitler
REALLY?
Richard Brighton Martin Luther King Jr.
PastorOfMuppets If you flip that quote around, you'll probably have something Hitler might've said.
PastorOfMuppets Your screen name is boss, gave me a giggle!
Richard Brighton
Did you know that the word gullible is not in the dictionary?
Surprised you didn't mention any of the Einstein misquotes that are EVERYWHERE. He didn't say 20% of what my Facebook newsfeed claims he did.
I wish you guys would do a whole video debunking the quotes Marilyn Monroe gets credited for.
And Gandalf never said "run you fools!" he said "fly you fools!"
Ah, but what Mr. Green doesn't know is now he HAS said it, add an ellipses at the end and one at the begging, and its officially quotable.
Dear John Green, Please continue to keep making these videos! i love them!!
To be fair the Snow White quote comes from people quoting the Disney version, not the original.
Some arrogant schmuck once told me after a card game where I kept on doing the same tactics over and over again that Einstein once said "The definition of madness, is to the same thing over and over again and expect different results" I immediately denounced this as bullshit as the core of science is to do the exact same thing over and over again and then log the results until it's consistent enough to become a theory or fact. The quote came from a drug-addict book where the quote meant that doing drugs over and over again won't change its results.
Note that Captain Jean-Luc Picard never misquoted Shakespeare, despite TNG lasting 4 seasons longer than TOS and Picard quoting Shakespeare much more often than Kirk.
Of course, Sir Patrick Stewart was a Shakespearean-trained actor
nm le nn.
John Green knows how to pronounce "Laozi" like a boss.
I love that the last misquotation was one of his! Brilliant! Love the Green brothers!
John Green just bears the knowledge of the universe
Actually "All that glitters is not gold" is a direct quote from a poem within The Lord of the Rings, not a Shakespeare quote although the Bard says something similar.
Actually, the LOTR quote is "All that is gold does not glitter". It's the exact opposite (it's about Aragorn).
Greatest series of videos I have yet to find on CZcams....
Did you make this whole video just to fix your misquote???
It's the eleventh episode...
But the doctor WAS the monster, really.
Obi Wan did however say "The force will be with you always"
I found this page not a few days ago and I am so very happy that I stumbled across it. I have found so much joy
"I would have written a shorter letter if I had more time" is my favorite misquote.
it would be greatly appreciated, if there is a link in the about section for these claims of "common misquotation." otherwise, all these claims in this video are without reason.
I'm pretty certain nobody in Inception ever says "we need to go deeper" and Morpheus never says the words "what if I told you..." in the Matrix.
Also I think John should have pointed out that the quote at 0:30 was attributed to MLK because the girl who posted it followed it with an actual MLK quote. People just didn't read it right and ended up leaving out his words.
Watched places I've never been, became interested in the topic of misquotations and accidentally found myself back to John Green
I like how there's a miniature version of John Greens book, The Fault in Our Stars, on the shelf next to Chewbacca!
Every time he says mental floss, I hear menopause.
OK, I'm going to ask: Who was that posing as the queen from snow white, or rather, had a crown and an apple 'shopped in?
Laurynas Milinis Hell, no!
But I would like an answer :D
I'm researching sexual attraction. So yes, please! ps: only if she isn't the partner of someone on the show!
Another awesome list and education
I NEED TO MEMORIZE ALL OF THESE. Misquotes are everywhere ugh.
THAT IS FROM ONE TREE HILL
LOL
What about "Arrow in the knee" not "to the knee"?
I love when he's saying the OTH quote and i'm like "who thought that was you?"
This reminds me of last week when my friend said ' I seen a gorgeous quote on tumblr . "We accept the love we think we deserve". That's John Green" and I nearly kicked over the table I was so mad because I even brought her to see The Perks with me !
in the german original of snow white from the brothers grimm it is mirror mirror on the wall or "Spieglein Spieglein an der wand"
Smashmouth wasn't very well versed in shakespear... but they WERE somewhat well read in Tolkien.
this might be one of my favorite videos on the internet.
This is one of my biggest bugbears. Thank you, mental_floss! ;)
Wait, I thought "the only two things in life that are certain are death and taxes" or something like that don't really remember, was from Benjamin Franklin? MY SCHOOLING IS A LIE
Franklin DID say (i'm pretty sure) "Beer is a sign that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
He did write it in a letter and certainly popularized it, but it was not the first time that philosophy was expressed in writing.
***** Close enough.
Ben Franklin also said something [similar to] "Three men may keep a secret...as long as two of them are dead."
My whole life has been a lie .____.
That's actually really really funny. Well done.
That's really deep and I applaud your profundity.
It's official. Jack Black is a time-traveling Paul Revere.
THANK YOU!!!!^^^ Whenever I say "Paul Revere looks like Jack Black," people say I'm crazy
you forgot "YEAH SCIENCE BITCH" is actually "YEAH MR WHITE ... YEAH SCIENCE"
by Jesse Pinkman
What a most entertaining, sharp-tongued young man. Applauding!
another big one is Marie Antoinettes 'let them eat cake' which is sadly her most famous qoute.
Sarah Palin never said "I can see Russia from my doorstep"
No, but she implied that her state's proximity to Russia counted as foreign policy experience.
Did anyone ever think John really said that last quote? Everyone knows Nathan Scott said that in a voice over in the series finale of OTH ...
all over tumblr, it says john green said it.
When he said that last quote, he said it. So technically he did say it....
Gonçalo Gonçalves
You did say it when you said it. Anyone who says a quote says a quote. Yeah, if your mind has been blown, I am not picking up those pieces.
Forget the dudes name but there was a Criminal Justice researcher who got misquoted saying "When it comes to deterrence nothing works." The misquote changed the way we structured police system towards a more 'Get tough on crime' approach. After a few years of studies to prove his misquote was incorrect he eventually took his own life because of it.
I just read your book tfios and km in a book hangover. Write more please please please. I thought your books were funny so I didn't read it but I love it. I need more
"To be the best, you have to beat the best." - Chris Brown
"Our nation's children are our greatest asset and our most precious treasure." - Joseph Kony
True story.
No, the first quote was first quoted by 16 time world wrestling champion Ric Flair.
Windex FTW kind of...to be pedantic, Ric Flair said, "To be the man, you gotta beat the man."
Fair enough.
Windex FTW thank you for knowing my comment was completely tongue-in-cheek. Most people would have gone on a rant, yelling through their keyboards at me. Cheers. 😆😆
Ah yes. Rihanna's nick name at the time was "the best".
I never thought that the phrase 'Money is the root of all evil' meant that all money and those who have it is evil. I always thought it meant that anything evil that happens is because of money.
I love all the cool facts. I'd gladly watch for longer if you would slow down. ❤
THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THE ONE TREE HILL ONE. YOU WONDERFUL GUY YOU.
"There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold".
Led Zeppelin misquoted Shakespeare before Smashmouth did.
+skorpeo2000 well glister means glitter, it's just an outdated synonym probably switched when the word fell out of use.
#25 - Oh sure, rail on a mediocre band like Smashmouth, but don't mention Zeppelin's reference in Stairway.
I believe Jack Nicholson says "You want answers?" followed by Tom Cruise shouting, "I want the truth!" and then Nicholson shouts back, "You can't handle the truth !".
The next part of that speech is pretty though provoking.
A frustrating one, which is mentioned in the very first of these videos, is that Ron Burgundy's famous line has been egregiously misquoted on the internet as "Well, that escalated quickly." The actual quote is "Boy! That escalated quickly."
The KJV (King James Version) Bible (The only Bible that doesn't have any additions, subtractions, or changes that God wanted into his perfect and unchanged word besides the actual language) says "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and the little child shall lead them." And it does matter if God's word is changed even with a "you" instead of a "ye" or something that small. Just felt I should point that out. Man shouldn't change God's word. It's perfect. I do so enjoy your videos, all the same.
And what is your basis for that conclusion?
I'm sorry, but I must disagree with your side note. The original Word was written in Hebrew and Greek, so even the KJV is a translation. Anything in any other language is a translation. And yes, some Greek or Hebrew words have several meanings, but if we look up a certain word like that in a study Bible and another translation uses the easier-to-understand version of the right meaning for the word, I believe it's fine, especially if it allows someone to understand easier. I like to bring up Romans 8:28 - "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (KJV) or "We know that God is always at work for the good of everyone who loves him. They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose," (CEV). I feel that translation choice is a personal thing, between God and the Bible reader. God will lead the reader to the right translation and make them understand the message He wants them to understand, in some way or another, if the reader tries to understand. That's the way I feel about it, anyway. I hope this makes some sense. Not trying to dissuade you from your belief, especially if God led you to KJV then God bless. This is just how I feel about the matter, and why :)
You don't think my comment was relevant? This video was about misquotation. I guess he was also incorrect to bring up the Bible?
dadude1425 And to the other comment (in case I didn't click on "reply" to "globbox38" which I should have lol) Yes, you may be right about the language translation. Although, the King James Version is the closest to the original Bible in those languages. It would be absurd to say someone must understand Greek or Hebrew to read it and be a Christian and go to Heaven. But I do not believe God is the author of confusion. His word is perfect and people should be willing to read it to learn it. If you aren't confused by the Bible sometimes, you're not paying attention. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. (1 Corintians 14:33 KJV) (I apologize if I am misusing/taking out of context that verse in any way.) God created his word. Man translated it to different languages so everyone could understand it. But then man change God's word and altered it to say so many different things than what God intended it to say. You were very fair with your comment. I'm not sure if I could have said anything but this. It's hard to make people understand how you do without pushing this away or sugar coating it to say "Oh it's ok that we believe differently". Especially when you aren't smart enough to use the Word in it or they are too stupid. (FYI I mean I'm not smart enough. I'm not calling you stupid.)
TheGamePlayer325 I do not understand how you have concluded the the KJV is the closest to the original version of the bible. Sure, the use of English in the KJV is brilliant, but I wouldn't say that it is the closest to "gods word." Keep in mind that the way it was written was already archaic to the time period. No one in the 1600s talked like that, it was done to give it the feeling of being from the past. The cultural context in which that version was created made it heresy to print bibles in anything other than Latin. Conflicts occurred which were primarily based on religion (catholics vs protestants).
Correct me if I am wrong, but your position seems to start on the assumption that the christian god exists and that it gave humanity a divine book which men then translated and changed. I ask again, why do you think that the KJV is the closest translation of "gods word" than any other version of the bible (in English, or are you asserting it applies to all languages)?
What? You mean all those inspirational pictures with a quote on Tumblr and Facebook are all a lie? I'm joking btw.
wow!! oh I didnt know that gandhi never said: be the the change you want to see in the world!! thanks!! your videos are really awesome!!
Neil Armstrong only meant to say, "One small step for A man, one giant leap for mankind." There was no error in the transmission. When Armstrong went to say his big line, he was too overwhelmed and excited and fumbled the words.
Listen to the recording of it; I can hear where the "a" should be just fine.
I'm sorry, but while I'm reading the misattributed quote, I misread the "misattribution" that I see in my peripheral as "masturbation" every single time...
i only misread it on the Freud part :))
Oh, Freud. Lol
I think you need a psychoanalysis.
Dang it, Freud. You were right all along. All I can think about is sex and my mother. How could you have known?
2:36 Holy mother, that witch is HOT!
Thanks for the answer to the question!
5:30 I do believe the icon choice for the word "sodomy" rather misses Brown's meaning.
Mandela effect...
Your mom's a Mandela effect.
I love how you guys used the picture of Jack Nicholson from Little Shop of Horrors! It brings back good memories :)
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE MARILYN MISQUOTE. Probably one of my biggest pet peeves out there, especially when she has so many good REAL quotes that get ignored.
hey they have a shout out to all of us! thanks Mental Floss!
I’ve read fault in our stars way too damn much thanks for that 😂
"The smallest of the felines, the cat is a masterpiece" is closer to da Vinci's original quote
Love your channel. It's got all the thinks I never cared about but always wanted to know.
"So easy, even a Canadian can do it!"
oh i even didnt know about the magic mirror on the wall!! thanks!!!
Also, lets not forget the other quote misattributed to John Green, which has developed since this video was made I think, "I'm in love with places I've never been to and people I've never met." Thank you, Melody.
John's anger at the OTH thing is hilaarious
"THAT IS FROM ONE TREE HILL!!!" I laughed way too hard at that.
"The force will be with you. Always." is the correct quote.
the ending THAT IS FROM ONE TREE HILL killed me. omfg
Funnily enough, in German Snowwhite actually says "mirror mirror on the wall (Spieglein Spieglein an der Wand)"
"There's only two things that money can't buy, and that's true love and home-grown tomatoes."
