  • On 6th June 2012 a damaged 24" / 60cm water main resulted in flooding of the London Underground Central Line tunnels between Stratford and Mile End.
    This film shows a westbound Central Line partially in the station at Stratford - the rest of the train trails down the ramp from a tunnel mouth.
    Also seen is part of a westbound Greater Anglia train passing through the adjacent platform 5.
    This film was taken from the eastbound platform 6; note that it has been closed with some reflective tape which at times can be seen billowing in the wind.
    We are fortunate that the tunnels at Mile End are only just below the ground (this was done to permit cross-platform interchange with the District Line trains) as this way the floodwaters did not imperil the rest of the UndergrounD system.

    I remember this incident very well as I was going to a graduation party at uni that day, but had to get a bus into Barking and use the District line instead!

    its all deep underground - the flooding was near here but not visible from here.

  • @CopenhagenRailProductions

    1:12 what's that DM doing there? I thought this wasn't possible with the newer tube stocks.

      Copenhagen Rail Productions It has always been possible with the 1992 Stock. It is very rare to see it though

    I think that it has to be expected that at the busiest times people will need to wait for platform space before boarding trains.
    As for overcrowding on the platforms, even a decade ago I recall evening rush hour platforms being so crowded that it seems that people would fall on to the tracks. eg: Chancery Lane, St Pauls...
    (continued...)

  • @CitytransportInfoplus
    @CitytransportInfoplus  Před 12 lety +1

    (part 2) As for the crowding on the trains, well unlike bovine cattle (which benefit from health & safety laws) there are no similar regulations for human cattle. In the summer it also becomes extremely hot inside the trains.
    Alas but for decades now those who control the purse strings have not really wanted to solve these issues. Hopefully because we are now in 2012 and its time for 'change' so things will do just that.
    However not in time to help during the Olympics / Paralympics.

    I thought you had a different camcorder - or did you change it?
    When I film things I mostly use the setting you suggest, its my AVS4U editing software which I question can produce 50fps films.
    at present my computer cannot play my unedited films (they keep freezing & jerking) but in mid June I'm getting a new mobo and cpu and once installed hopefully I'll be able to watch the films on the pc. I'll investigate the Cyberlink too.

    we shall see... yes walking is good for some journeys as well, but people must expect that at busy times they may have to queue.
    btw, dont forget that Stratford is also served by two DLR routes, the Great Eastern Mainline services from Liverpool Street, trains from the Lea Valley, the Overground / North London Line and that the high speed line also serves the nearby Stratford International station. So, the Underground is not meant to handle the crowds on its own!

    How long did it take them to resume the service? Sounds like a nasty thing to deal with.

      only a day or so - the situation ended up being nowhere near as serious as it could have been.

    lets see what happens and how things 'pan out'. We are in 2012, Especially the second half of the year is expected to see big things happen which change things - for most people the changes will eventually prove to be for the best, but it may not seem that way at first.

    There's no way the tube system is going to cope during the Olympics. It can barely cope during normal times.
    Great opportunity to walk everywhere and get fit! It's amazing how far you can get in an hour, if you walk fast.

  • @m0dernrailways
    @m0dernrailways Před 12 lety

    Very very good catch! I see they still haven't got it up and running overnight so it must be pretty serious! Fingers crossed it doesn't happen during the Olympics or there will be absolute chaos saying that TfL (management) seem to be up for any problem during the games and no doubt the staff too!

  • @Fitness4London
    @Fitness4London Před 12 lety

    True, but there's no margin for error in the system, ie if one of these goes down, the pressure on the rest of the network becomes unmanagable.
    The problem is not just the queues, it's the degree to which people are crammed into the trains/tubes, that makes some journeys a nightmare. I've seen situations where a train/tube is so packed tight that people can't get off at the station they want to. This is the real problem, not just queues.
    It's a safety issue too. Crowd control etc.

    Everyone here moaning about the overcrowding, I would say its only going to get worse and worse with more and more people using the system, and even with Crossrail the passenger numbers will keep growing and growing.

    What's wrong with this central line

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  Před 5 lety

      nothing - the line was partly flooded by an event not related to the railway but it was closed for safety reasons and until the reason for the flooding had been resolved.

      +citytransportinfo okay, thank you. I thought National Express went out of business and lost their franchise, though. I'm from the US, but I'm interested in UK trains.

    • @CitytransportInfoplus
      @CitytransportInfoplus  Před 8 lety

      +YLW Pyro whilst they lost their franchise on the trains they still exist as a bus company. The reason why the train was still in their livery was that even when a different company wins the franchise it takes time to repaint them all (that is, if they even try.. some don't!)

    • @ylwpyro9549
      @ylwpyro9549 Před 8 lety

      +citytransportinfo I know that a lot of ex-National Express trains (especially class 91s and DMUs) only had the logos removed, but were never repainted. It was like that with ex-NSE units as well.
