I think 21 miles in EV mode is fairly impressive when you consider someone buying this as their daily driver and weekend toy probably commutes under 20 miles each way to and from work during the week. I would save a fortune on gas switching to this (not including the additional electricity cost at the house, but still).

When you have some cash to spare, put a 4 inch lift on it and get some 35 inch or even 37 inch Nitto Grappler Tires (the EXO Grappler OR the Ridge Grappler) for your offroading needs. If your skid plates ever get bent or "ripped", there are other aftermarket boron steel or even TITANIUM skid plates you can put underneath to get even better bottom coverage.
In terms of extra gear, ALWAYS buy TWO extra 20 Gallon Jerry Cans you fix to the back of the Jeep for more fuel range AND I would suggest buying FOUR Go-Pro cameras with at least two 4 Gigabyte SSD external hard disk drives so you can RECORD 4K resolution 60 fps video from the front, back and sides of all your off-road adventures. The Go-Pro camera setup is ALSO used for grabbing that MILLION DOLLAR SET OF CRYSTAL CLEAR PHOTOS of a family of Sasquatches (i.e. Bigfoot) looking with envy at your cool new Jeep!

I get even better mileage outside of my commute because most of my driving outside of weekend trips is within 30 miles of home. I also have 375hp and 470lb of torque at my disposal (even when the battery is ‘depleted’ because it keeps 15% in reserve and does regenerative braking and charge from the engine when it’s running to feed the battery). The thing to do is to save battery for when the gas is low. I do not know how many times I have seen off roading channels run their jeeps out of fuel sometimes just miles from the gas station. Now comes this the little extra to get you there to you get fuel. I see it as an emergency device.

    • @davidcarrico3385

The battery is in the passenger compartment and has its own heating and cooling system to optimize it and keep it in a temperature controlled environment. We’ll find out for sure next winter, but theoretically any cold or hot weather impact is only felt in first few minutes as it comes up to speed/temp. It doesn’t require the gas engine for heat(there is an electrical heater), but I wonder if the gas engine is kicked on to help expedite warming in extreme conditions.?…

Electric vehicles ARE the future! Period !!! -- Ultra high Torque and incredible acceleration coupled with QUIET operation makes it the deal of the century for this type of offroading!
I should also note that NEW Aluminum-Air batteries are in the works that can offer up to 8x the actual power density over current Lithium Ion technology at only a 1.5x to 2x weight penalty at the same cubic volume of battery. This means we SHOULD be able to get anywhere from 4x to 8x the range over Li-Ion! It's a safer technology and can function in both COLDER (-40C and below!) and HOTTER (60C+) environments! Plus it has NO deep discharge problems so even if you fully drain it, it will NOT damage the battery unlike what happens to Li-Ion when it deep discharges!
The only issue is cost since it is 2x to 3x the current manufacturing cost of Li-Ion and won't come down in price for at least 5 years!
That said, having a Jeep Rubicon that can get at least 1600km (1000 miles) and more on one charge makes a great amount of sense to me as a go-anywhere 4x4 vehicle. I could just buy a giant solar blanket to drape over some sunny hillside to charge the Jeep and NEVER have to come back into town except for food and other specific supplies!

    • @davidcarrico3385

Short answer is yes, that is the least efficient way to run. For most cases it’s better to run it at its default which is hybrid, but if you do run it in eSave, the default of ‘battery save’ is more efficient than ‘battery charge’. Haven’t tested it enough to know how much of a hit ‘battery charge’ is though, but there is a hit.
