      Mine wasn't. It was garbage and probably the most disappointing purchase in audio ever. I have an old SL-1200, an SL-23, and a Pro-Ject DC. My Planar1 went back after ridiculous anti-skate issues, hum, and static issues. I wanted to love it. Spent 1 week on the 1st one trying to diagnose all the issues, and spent 2 weeks on the replacement. I'm not the only one and yes it doesn't affect every unit. However my other 3 TT's had no issue with hum or static and definitely no skating issues. Now I have had the RT85 for a few weeks......although not the best TT ever, I dare say in it's price range I have a hard time saying it isn't.

She doesnt have a ton of money, so i went with your recomendation and asked for the rt-81. This now completes my system. (Technics 7200 integrated amp from a friends storage unit, a matching tuner from ebay for $25, and a set of paradigm studio monitors) I listened to my very first record a week ago, and all k can say is wow. I had no idea how much i was missing in warmth and frequancy compared to streaming music. Ive been fascinated with the thought of analog to analog audio. Thank you sharing your knowledge with us! I'm not all this experienced with cartirdges but I can say that the 2m Red is a really detailed one, really brings out all the transients and the high end details. • @TheSoundrookie
    @TheSoundrookie Před 5 lety +4

    The main reason for having the belt on the outside of the platter is to have a thick platter, without a subplatter. You can swap the platter from the 81 to the 84, but try it the other way around then you get the picture. Besides that I don't think Fluance put that much thought in to it, because there's really nothing new to the construction. They took already existing ideas, which doesn't require too much brainstorming. It may sound a bit negative, but don't take it for more than it is. This looks to be a very good modern turntable, approching the quality of Rega for instance, and I love the fact that they skipped the build in preamp. A good sign that they are getting serious.
    Great video mate.

    Nice review of a very handsome turntable! I would suggest using a screw-down record clamp when an acrylic platter is being used, as it will help hold the record more tightly to the acrylic; giving better record stability, plus, it'll stop and skidding of the record on the smooth surface, thus helping to protect against scratching. I use the 'Project Klamp-it' record clamp on my Project turntable with acrylic platter....sounds lovely!

I'm sorry to hear that people are having problems with shipments to the UK. For the price of the RT 85 I can't find an other turntable with the same feature list without adding a few hundred dollars more. The other wishlist Item might be a carbon fiber tonearm "S" shaped. I'm not sold on how much different it would perform over aluminum but they do look Purdy. :) I priced a Pro-ject Esprit Carbon at 799 cdn that didn't have all the features as the RT 85 has at 665 cdn. Both lovely turntables but bang for the buck Fluance seems to sell itself.

    Great helpful channel, love what you are doing. Fluance is running a 20% off special right now, but the highest model available is the RT83 so I went with one of those. I'm curious if you think the aluminum platter with the silicone rubber mat is that much of a downgrade? I actually think the 2M red sounds pretty natural in comparison to the blue, the blue is a little punchier, wider, but it can do this little upper mid range push that can feel a little forced and less balanced, I don't think it's an issue for me, but I am a little concerned about missing out on the heavy acrylic platter, is it better or is it a little bit of marketing hyperbole?

    Is the tonearm on this turntable set at the same height as the one on the RT81. Fluance mentions that the tracking angle might be different if you upgrade the RT81 with the Ortofon Red. Wondering if the angles on both series allow for swapping between Audio Technica and Ortofon cartridges.

    I bought the RT85 a few weeks ago, set it up, balanced the tone arm, tested the stylus force with a digital stylus pressure gauge to make sure it's correct and leveled the plinth. I finally got around to testing the anti-skate with a blank CD. I found the only setting that will keep the stylus steady was all the way up to 4 on the dial (which is the highest so can't go any further...lol). The setting "should" be 1.8, just like the counterweight, but no go. I did some research on the net and found this is a known problem, at least with some of their models. I've written their support to find out if keeping the anti-skate so high will damage my records. I don't know what would damage them more, keeping the setting high but at least stabilizing the skate or the recommended setting and have the stylus pushing in? Maybe some that are much more knowledgeable about such things can enlighten me.

    Hi, I'm from the UK, I've had an Audio Technica LP120 for a few years and been very happy with it but now thinking of getting a Fluance rt84, in your opinion is it a step up or is it a step side ways.
    Many thanks Gordon.

    Craig I’m truly glad they sent this to you. I think you should have made contrasting differences between the two tables and made that comparison based off price. I know you said no built in preamp and feet dampening and they share the same platter, were their other differences? For those making a choice between the 81 and 84 is the sound quality better on the 84 and all things considered is it a better turntable for the dollar and do you know if you will be getting an 85? Thank you Craig and thanks for your time.

    Ok so I'm sold on fluance but I can't decide between the rt 81 or the 83. Now I understand that the 83 doesn't have a preamp but it does come with the red Ortofon that I was going to immediately upgrade on the 81. What has me is the speed is adjustable on the 81 and the 83 has a servo controlling the speed. That is the only real concerning difference I'm seeing right?

    Hi Craig, thanks to your review I decided to purchase the RT-84 with Ortofon 2M Blue. I am SO happy that I did. I was able to purchase while it was briefly on sale and I feel I got the deal of the century. In your opinion, how much BETTER does the acrylic platter perform compared to the aluminum with rubber mat? I am thinking about the upgrade, someday, just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thanks again for your work, keep it up! We all enjoy your thoughts and opinions.

    What can you recommend to cut down on static electricity? I can spin clean a record, and as soon as I put it on, it's collected dust, and I get zapped when touching the tone arm. Thanks.

  • @patrickhill5654
    @patrickhill5654 Před 3 lety

    The 2 GRND wires are for connecting 1 to the turntable and the preamp ( if you have one ) and the preamp to the amp, or you can cut your setup shorter and get an amp with a phono input.

    Nice review. I like the fact you point out all the little details like the leveling feet and the cue lever now being redesigned so it's further away from the tonearm as in the RT-81. Also, I, like you prefer the real, solid hinges on the dustcover (Are you reading this, Rega? With your flimsy hinges for $600?)

    Thoughts or experience with the Pro-Ject Debut Recordmaster USB turntable? The newer one with the 2M Red. I intend to listen in real-time via USB through my HTPC going straight through my Khadas Tone Board, this way I can use a high quality digital EQ (my custom speakers absolutely require the use of an EQ to boost bass).

    I've got the RT-82 and I'm loving it so far. You can tell this company cares about making a quality product. I love that you can upgrade these Reference turntables as well. I can eventually upgrade my RT-82 to an RT-85 if I choose to. When I was looking for a new table, that one aspect was a pretty big factor in my decision to go with Fluance. At this price point, you really can't go wrong with any of the Reference models, in my opinion.

  • @TBNTX
    @TBNTX Před 5 lety

    Personally, I think that the configuration change with the RT84 makes sense. Customers may upgrade their RT84’s aluminum platter with the acrylic one, turning the RT84 into the RT85. Fluance has offered the acrylic platter previously for the RT82 & RT83, but I don’t see it currently being offered. Perhaps it’s because of the backlog of the RT85s, but once Fluance has caught-up, I expect to see the acrylic platters to be offered again.

    I’m curious as to whether the spindle can be removed with everything else intact? Once in a while I have an off center pressing that I try to center, but obviously that’s impossible (aside from carving out a larger center hole on the record!) if the spindle can’t be removed. Thanks for your review!

    First I want to tell you how much I enjoy your videos and the straight talk no BS you bring to my new hobby. I've been going back and forth between the Fluance RT85 and Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit SB to replace my hated Marantz TT42 which was my first turntable (you never forget your first). Watching your channel has nearly convinced me to go with the RT85. The only thing that's preventing me from clicking the ''Buy it Now'' button on the Fluance website is that I keep hearing the tonearm is a big issue on the RT. I don't think you can upgrade a tonearm and it's a pretty important part of the table. My question will the tonearm bug me, will it affect the sound to make me regret going with the Fluance? Thanks for your help and keep doing what you do

    • @VinylTV33
      @VinylTV33  Před 4 lety +1

      I'm surprised you heard that. I have no problem with the tonearm on either of my RTs. In fact, I just went and had a good look and handled the one on both and they are both solid and very well made. So, my answer is that there is NO issue with the tonearm. I've had my RT81 for well over a year, and all is still like new. Have fun!

    This turntable seems like a much better option than the Audio Technica AT120... and I understand your reasons for not wanting a DJ type turntable but I love my Technics SL1200 MK 2 in black! I still don’t find any modern tables anywhere near it’s price point with comparable build quality! Running the Ortofon 2M Blue with it and it’s amazing! Instant speed. Perfect rubber mat! Nearly everything is adjustable and customizable! Just a wonderful listening platform! I did enjoy your review though as I always do and this deck looks like a solid choice for the money. I do agree that three feet are a much better idea! BTW, I too am a Rush fan and based on your review, I bought the double vinyl set of Clockwork Angels! It’s a pricey set but money well spent! I can now clearly hear all the layers of music on this masterpiece! I whole heartedly agree with you that the vinyl version is the one to own if given a choice! The CD sounded so compressed I had stopped listening to it and forgot the music. Now I can’t get enough of this album!

      I've never switched a component out so fast as I did the AT LP120. It's the most clumsily built piece of equipment I've ever used. I ended up buying a 1200MK3 from Japan, and it's a thousand times better for the same price.

    Thanks for the honest review. I currently own a LP-120usb and Im hating it. (motor noise and rumble). Therefore a good belt drive TT is in my future. I am definitely leaning toward this table. I am approx the same age as you and I was heavy into music in the 70's & 80's and had several great TT back then. (Sansui, Denon, Technics) I am just now getting back into the analog scene and cannot describe how I miss my old system. I thought the LP-120usb would be close to my Technics 1200. Boy, was I wrong... Then I tried a couple of "vintage tables" . They all needed more work than they were worth. So, a new modern well built belt drive is where Im currently headed. Looking at Pro-ject, Uturn, Rega and Fluance. Sofar the Fluance RT-85 is looking like a solid winner. (BTW, once I get its replacement the LP-120 is hitting Ebay, if I can even stand it that long.. Heck, I may just throw it in the trash)

    • @VinylTV33
      @VinylTV33  Před 5 lety

      I recommended the LP120 to people a few years ago, and I'm embarrassed that I did. The motor noise is depressing and my tonarm bearing needed tightening because of noise. My cue lever has no dampening. I use it on my live broadcast where no one notices these things, and I'm being rough cuing up records. No way I would do that with my Fluance tables.
