      The War of Art--examines why so many people get 99% of the way to their goal, discussing how the push against achievement gets stronger towards the end, as the universe pushes back to prevent force of change, only the best and most tenacious push through...not as you imagine getting over the hump with most of the work done. So logical, scientific, phenomenal read. Life altering as you begin to SEE it after that.

    Man's Search for Meaning. Amazing, powerful book. Read it. It's a short read. By Dr. Viktor Frankl, a concentration camp survivor. He founded Logotherapy, which is finding meaning in life as a remedy for things like depression. That book is about his experiences as survivor of the Nazi camps. One thing I learned is that some of the camp guards were humane. Of course, most were not. He also had the line that sticks in my mind 20 years later: "Meaning comes from your interface with the world." Ever notice how an older person suffering from depression suddenly comes to life when there is a task - they have to pick a kid up, or they volunteer as a door greeter at Walmart, or even taking care of a pet or plant. Meaning is not found with you in meditation, self-absorbed or "following your bliss." It could be that, but he's saying that your meaning in life comes from other people, society, your interactions with them. And also, no matter what you face, you can decide in that moment how it affects you, so it;s also a deeply Stoic book.

    While I appreciate your basic point, there's plenty of research that supports being a multi-sport athlete. Playing volleyball, for example, could have tangible benefits for developing basketball skills (pivoting, positioning, etc.). Many athletes have played multiple sports at a high level: Jim Brown, Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, Tim Tebow, Jeff Samardzija, and plenty of football players who were also track stars.

    • @KosmicJelly
      @KosmicJelly Před rokem +1

      You’re absolutely right, though it bypasses the point he’s making. Take Michael Jordan for example: he’s one of the greatest basketball players to ever live, he was also a “track star” as you say. But was he ever the best at both of those at the same exact time? To be the best at anything, you have to put 100% into *that one thing* alone. It doesn’t mean a person cannot excel at multiple things, just that each additional discipline will detract from the others. Triathlon winners train to be the best at those combined disciplines performed in succession, though I have yet to see one who is the best at any one of those disciplines in isolation. So the point to remember is that once you identify that single thing which you are determined to own and be the absolute best at, it’s necessary to focus 100% on that, else you will always be second to whom so ever *does* give it their all goes all in on that one single thing.

    Awaken the giant within by Robbin Anthony is my favorite book since today

      That was a great read with positive stories but I didn't keep the book because it didn't motivate me to do anything or figure out what I should be doing with my life. It wasn't worth the money spent because it didn't help put anything to practice. My financial problems didn't get solved but it helped me quit chocolate 😂.
