    Fantastic video. That tunnel was build with forward thinking to allow for enough clearance for double stack train wagons.

    Good afternoon, Dave...that was a close call...thank you for the MARC train...it took the safe track, and avoided any height problems...thumbs up!

    The Point of Rocks Tunnel was first constructed between 1866 and 1868 through the Catoctin Mountain. The tunnel was enlarged between 1902 and 1903. It's been around for quite a while, but that's okay. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

    Talk about close fits and intermodal stacktrains....check out the NS Heartland Corridor through VA and WV where NS notched several existing tunnels to clear the stacks and the pedestrian bridge in Roanoke, VA near the VA Transportation Museum, those are close fits for stacks. Great video, thanks for sharing.

      Nick Hill....Our daughter and her family lived in Roanoke several years and we visited her often to see our newest grandson. I spent several hours at the Transportation museum with the grandson watching trains. I didn’t know NS was closing that shop up, sad. We are just 5 miles from the Pritchard, WV NS Heartland Corridor Intermodal Yard, sadly being sold now to a new operator. Fun to watch them loading and unloading containers there. Be safe Nick.

    • @77thTrombone
      @77thTrombone Před 4 lety +3

      For the uninitiated:
      That "outside path" is what locals (and the National Park Service) would call the *C&O Canal.* (motto: _"mo mule is mo better."_ )
      The canal's opening predated the B&O's charter by 3 years, and the 2 outfits wrangled for right-of-way here, around the South end of Catoctin Mountain. The canal remained in operation for another 22~ years after this tunnel was completed.

      They actually routed the eastbound track around the outside of the tunnel decades ago for clearance issues, in the 1960s IIRC. The tunnel was bored in 1867, most likely to ease the curve around the mountain (the 1902 date is when it was rebuilt).

      Larry, These "Well Cars" are designed with the bottom of the car to be as low as possible, Just a little above the tracks, so the double stack is not over height. Even with that, some bridges in our area (N.IL.) have been torn out and rebuilt higher to allow double stacks to pass under them.
      I saw another video where the round top of the tunnel was chiseled out along the top to allow double stack trains to pass through. Stay Safe.

      I think it was originally built as a double-track tunnel. Today there is only one track in the middle, so the clearance is sufficient.
