I'll chime in with personal experience: While biking in my own neighborhood my husband and I were nearly attacked by a huge Staffordshire terrier pit bull mix. It was right up on us without a sound. Then it launched a tirade of snarling, barking and racing back and forth getting shocked by an invisible fence. No owner in sight the entire time. Found out later the canine was "scarred from being wire muzzled and used as a bait dog" and was housed on the front yard, with no visible separation. We got away and then we got mad and then we got educated. We would've been killed that day if that pit would've broken through like it was trying to do. No doubt. We made a huge stink - we got relentless, and mean, just like the dog - and got it booted out of our neighborhood. Old lady sold her house and took it with her. Now there's two more I've seen recently walking by on insufficient leashes. Be safe out there. Never trust a pit bull or its "bad" owner.

The exact thing happened to me and my hunny, but we were trail riding on HORSES. can you IMAGINE? Out of nowhere horses were galloping breakneck in all directions then I saw the pits on other side of their underground fence...it was a nightmare. I got hurled over the ravine, hunny stayed on somehow.
The owner was publicly chastised on our horse forum online and I think scared some sense into her.

I was on the elevator alone which is only 6ft. wide almost 2 wks ago. When the door opened, standing there was a gigantic, unmuzzled, wide mouth, massive head, tiger size, identical to the one on the right physique Pit Bull Terrier with it holding the other end of the leash. When the monster saw me, the blood thirsty beast immediately attempted to attack me, but it pulled the beast back. They both got on the elevator. I never want to, but I thought I was going to have to put the monster down that day. I am always prepared to do so. Of course it said what it always says. "He doesn't bite." I do not listen to it. I know everything about Satan's beast including it's maulings and deaths. This particular monster's record is quite extensive. My wife is terrified of dogs and Pit Bull Terriers. She gets behind me, holds on tightly and cries when one is near. She has every right to be and to do so. They are not me.

I agree, that comment about “we don’t ban cars or guns” is absolutely ridiculous comparison AND, we have to use cars to get to work and various places BUT it is NOT vital to own a certain breed of dog, there are THOUSANDS of dogs to choose from, the dog population is totally out of control , it would also benefit pit bulls/types, it would save them from the horrific cruelty at the hands of their criminal owners and it would save hundreds/thousands of them from being killed in shelters

100% percent, it’s at the point where there may not be a consensus. Personally, I think pit bulls need experienced owners who have a license to own the breed, along with a competency test making sure you can take care & understand situations which may trigger the dog. They’re not cats that you can let run free, that’s another issue in SA. They need supervision.

@@mandlenkosihlazo977 training may soften and lessen the likelihood of the dog turning, but as an owner of a pit bull type breed you have to understand the risk you are taking with owning a power breed. So, understanding situations that might trigger the dog, may lessen future attacks. On the other hand Keeping the dog on a lead in a small yard, with sand, a little food, little socialization with other animals, will create more situations where the dog is anxious/excited and can be triggered to bite. This can increase an already naturally aggressive dog, with physical strength and a tolerance of pain which goes beyond other dog breed.

People are openly admiting they are keeping and raising these animals for protection.
These dogs have the ability to rip limbs off and kill even full grown adults. That qualifies this breed as lethal weapons. Thus they are admiting to keeping lethal weapons on their yard.
It's illegal to own lethal weapons without licence. All these people who admit they are keeping lethal weapons on their yards should be treated same as
The kungfu guy who has to register his hands as lethal weapons and the gun owner who has to licence his gun and go for weapons training.
They're not getting golden retrievers for protection. They are specifically going for this specific breed, cos everyone understands that this is the most vicious breed out there.
Thus you have to acknowledge these animals belong in a class of their own (not clumped in with domestic category) - if they were only harmless domestic pets at heart as some would have us to believe, all these people would not be getting them for protection in the first place

BUT, the two of them have to regularly be separated from each other (one in the backyard and the other in the front) because they'd bark like insane rabid animals at all passers-by and then, in sheer frustration, turn on each other for lack of something to "attack". The dogs bark like raging lunatics if I even dare open my garage door or if I am doing work on the perimeter of my property. I have absolutely no doubt at all that should their gate ever accidentally open and they got out, I would be torn to shreds within seconds. When the pitbull attacks the owner/stranger it's immediately the owner's fault; they didn't raise them properly, were too harsh, etc etc...the thought that those dogs were bred for violence and killing (and are still used for illegal dog fights today) never occurs to them. Just name the thing "Princess" and whoosh all the bad genetics instantly dissipates. They're cute and cuddly until something in their head snaps. There's no cure for stupidity...

I also have high walls so he can't get out of the yard, I have multiple warning signs warning that I do have a pitbull on my property, I had him sterilized , I keep him inside the house mostly, as he is trained to ask to go outside if he needs to. The breed itself is not the problem but the irresponsible owners are. You have to know what kind of responsibility you will have before you decide on owning a pitbull. It would be great if we can implement the licensing of every pet owned, and mandatory sterilization for all pets owned. And then the irresponsible owners should face consequences if they do not comply to the set standards.

My condolences to the parents but when ever there is a child attacked my question is what did that child do? Maybe not that day but in the past. I have seen a child go up to a dog on a leash, and no it wasn't a pitbull, and ask the owner if she can pet the dog. She was given permission to pet it. She fussed the dog and he let her then for no reason at all she slapped it. Fortunately the dog didn't react. My husband and I have caught the kids on our street poking sticks through the fence teasing my dogs. I have told my neighbours what they are doing but they just shrugged their shoulders and said they are kids what must rhey do? I have warned them that if they get bit we are not going to beheld responsible for the medical fees. We have trained our dogs that when we pull into the garden with the car they are not allowed to put their noses past the gate. My pitbull passed away earlier this year. He was trained the same. But our neighbours respected him not because he was vicious or aggressive but because they knew he had been trained to protect me. I was not allowed to stand closer than a meter by the fence and he sat in the middle whiles i spoke to whom so ever was on the other side. So long as they stood a meter from the fence he was happy. Come closer and he stood up and bared his teeth. If you stepped back he sat down again and was as cool as a cucumber. I could take him by the ruff and shake him, pretend to throttle him. If you weren't in the room you would think he was attacking me. When he had me flat on my back it was a slobber fest. I miss him, he was my friend, my protector and my playmate. With him and any of my other dogs. He was the only pitbull. they all grew up together , have there quarrels, but even if he was still alive, I would not hand him over. You will have to give your kid up or shot him/her first before I give up any of my children. Sorry but humans are more vicious than pitbulls - the farm attacks that are supposedly not happening a point of reference.

Great Topic, you know when these topics come up, i start wondering....who are the greater killer's...Is it dogs or human being's. Do we seriously tackle the issues at how we bring up kids in this world that rape/kill/murder/ steal..etc from there fellow beings....since we have all the sense in the world to discriminate? Do we really have hard enough dialogues about out behaviour as human beings seing the atrocities we are committing to our own Brothers and Sister's in our country? What is the ratio of the killings and people being bitten by dogs compared to how many rapes and killings in our society. Now why we are worried about dogs...it does seriously make you think how warped we are as a society in SA. Prayers and condolences to the family who lost there children🙏🏿

As I was about to type.... You already said exactly what I wanted to say. Honestly, a human killing another human happens every minute. Yet we don't call for bans of a certain "race". Don't we as humans know better not to kill than a dog??? Come on, murderers are only sent to jail then later on released or even apply for bail without jail time. How is it that we want to ban a dog when we can't even regulate the justice system for humans properly. Or another example is so many teenagers have committed suicide due to comparing themselves to the bullshit we see on Instagram. Yet we don't even think of banning Instagram in our country or in the world. People are just focusing on these dogs that can actually be regulated, but fail to see what else needs more attention. Seriously!!! Why are we putting up burglar bars, electric fences, alarm systems etc.? Because we as humans are scared of being killed by our own species......we should focus on the bigger picture!!! But nonetheless, my condolences go out to the families who lost their lives to these dogs

I once stayed in an area where burglaries were the order of the day. Numerous reports at the Police Station yielded zilch. I had to resort to dogs. After trying a number of breeds from Jack Rusell, German shepherd and then pit bulls. All forms of harassment to my safety stopped with the introduction of the latter.
The pits were fine with my small kids until I gave them away as I moved to a safer area. The owners must train their dogs.

You're congratulating yourself on leaving a loaded gun in your kid's play pen and bragging about the fact that they never managed to figure out how to get the safety turned off and shoot each other. Pitbulls are aggressive animals and this delusion of control is exactly why accidents happen.

Just my point, I personally do not like these dogs as they can be very aggressive and where bred for that

  • @tebogoshadracknqai6368

Every dog needs a training, I disagree with people saying that “if Pitbulls need an intensive training they should then not be regarded as domestic pets”.
I see people comparing American Bully pitbull with other breeds, it's so wrong. People just need to acknowledge Pitbull as a capable potential dog, not a dangerous dogs.
I find it very foolish people think that Dogs think like them. How many human cases of murder, rape, robbery and other crimes are being reported on daily basis. Perhaps an animal like pitbull don't have that intellectual capacity to acknowledge that what am doing is wrong if is not a well raised animal unlike humans. Still I've never seen people such taking a stand, or it is because Pitbulls are just animals who can not talk or defend themselves. Human beings are selfish because a killer who used a knife to kill, it was a choice and that person thought this through before doing it, but still that will be given a second chance of life instead of banning them. Because animals can not defend themselves people now people want to ban them.
We have laws that govern animals, but never enforced. Why can't people just acknowledge that people must be held accountable for their dogs killing people. Why can't just people accept that bad dog owners are the root cause of the problem?
Each and every abnormal dog breeds namely pitbull, Rotviller, Bull dog, Doberman and others are capable of killing a child @10< just that it hasn't happened yet. Why can't we just enforce law instead of banning innocent dogs? Because I believe that by enforcing the law will prevent this kind of incidents from happening.
Our government is to be blamed too 😒
People are being emotional, it's understandable but unnecessary at some point.

Yes a gun or car will not jump a wall. What will happen if you leave your loaded gun on the bed or table or leave your car keys in the ignition with kids around? Ownership is the key here. Gun out of a safe & car keys in the ignition while car is ON is same risk as a loose Pitbull with a less security. We run away from responsibilities.....regulations will end this pandemic. There is uncontrolled breeding out there not just the Pitbull dog.
