    Nice Video David. I'm a similar weight to you and went from 140 to 158cm board on cable. The main advantage of the large board is for landings. The larger board really absorbs the landing which makes it easier to ride away but more importantly takes alot of the impact and saves your body big time. Main disadvantage I noticed was spinning off the end of small rails 2 feet to 6 inches in height when you really need the board to spin super fast to do 3's and above. It is really hard with the big board and definitely can't do alot of stuff that can be done on a 140cm board. I don't think most people do much of this so I'd recommend to go as big as possible on the cable to save your body in the longterm.

      @DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder  Před 3 lety +2

      The landings is such a good point that I left out, it definitely makes a huge difference there. Great to hear your perspective on that and also spinning off rails! Hope you're keeping well!

    Add 7 - 10cms to this cable sizing chart and you'll have an accurate chart for 2021.

    Great video. I wished i waited a little but more, when i bought my first (and only) board in 2013. CTRL The Supreme. Still a great a board. The moulded channels were never an issue until i was able to test a completely flat board last year. I mean, there are about 8 years developement between the new tested board and mine, but i can't get over switching boards. It works just fine, but something new is tempting.

      @DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder  Před 3 lety +1

      Yesss, absolutely. I see what you are saying. It's not that you need one as your current board is a perfect, but some slightly newer tech might be interesting. Definitely worth considering if you're in a position to make the upgrade!

    Great advice, I’m still rocking my 2009 O’Brien Valhalla cable. I get tempted to change it every now and then, but feel I will be buying a kayak next lol had a 2009 O’Brien Decade for the boat but sold it as I was not using it, I do miss that board!

      Unreal. I think if you upgraded to a full cable board (assuming you're riding cable) you will notice a huge difference for the better! The flex in them makes it a whole different game!

      @@DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder I started at a members run boat club, great days driving the boat towing mates etc. But when it was bought out, we transferred to cable and have only had a few sets behind the boat since. I will look at a new cable board now ;-)

    To me the channels on the bottom of a boat board make more difference than anything,my first 2 years I learned on a fairly featureless bottom then switched up to an obrian like David’s,fins or not the traction difference was huge,since then I’ve learned more about using the edge more aggressively but find smooth bottom vs lots of channels similar to the difference between power or manual steering on a car

    love and own both of those boards! but... my sob is a blast behind the boat. I feel like its more playful and possibly i get away with a little more sketchy landings than i do with other boards.

    • @DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder
      @DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, 100%, it's very playful on the boat and the slightly less traction on the bottom means you do get away with more stuff!! A lot to be said for that!

  • @HoHoPlays
    @HoHoPlays Před 3 lety +2

    I bought a O'Brien SOB a few years ago and I love it. I use it on cable and behind the boat. I do put my fins in for the boat and take them out for the cable.

      That's so awesome. The SOB gets all the praise on the cable but it is a great board on the boat too.

    My first board was the Hyperlite Milkcart and I got it because it was the end of season sale and one of the only boards the shop had left. At my park everyone rides Slingshot and after trying that one out I haven't looked back for the past 5ish seasons. The difference between having channels/a stiff board like the Milkcart and the very flex Reflex without any channels at all is night and day. The Milkcart feels like riding on tracks :D.

    Hey David! I rode mostly boat board in the past but transitioning onto cable, would you recommend Ronix Springbox 1, 2, or Hyperlite Ripsaw? Wanting to learn the basic prior to hitting kickers and boxes.

    David! Hope you see this question! Bindings? Is there a universal binding to use for both cable and boat? Does it matter? I like a very supportive boot but I'm new to cable riding so I'm not sure if it's too stiff for cable riding. Cheers!

    Question, not exactly related to the topic here, but you touched on it, why are Air Tricks so out of favor?
    I don't get it, they look cool (to me), they feel cool, what gives?
    Maybe I'm just getting too old...

    • @DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder
      @DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder  Před 3 lety +2

      haha I like them too but in the last 8 years or so they have become very uncool. I think the reason for this is it separates us away from snowboarding and skating. In saying that I actually have noticed in the last year or so people are becoming more interested in doing Air tricks so maybe they will return!!

    • @erikneufeld7022
      @erikneufeld7022 Před 3 lety +1

      @@DavidOCaoimhWakeboarder Thanks for the response, love the videos! And that makes sense, but I don't care to be more like snowboarding or skating, I'd rather celebrate the unique-to-the-sport tricks that having a towline permits, like raleys, and other mid-trick rotation changes like big rewinds etc (couldn't do without rope), and yes, air tricks... Hope they make a comeback, and in the mean time I'll just keep being uncool ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
