- As of right now, Carson Wentz the Philadelphia Eagles savior does not have a job in the NFL, but why is that? How did things go so horribly wrong for this fallen hero to end up where he is. In this video we will enter the downward spiral that is Carson Wentz's NFL career, to see why everything went so wrong. Carson Wentz proves something I've thought for a while now, that part of a an nfl qb's job and development is to learn to stay healthy. That means spiking the ball, taking embarrassing sacks, running out of bounds or sliding, and in general doing things that might make you look "weak." But it's about putting aside the ego and desire to look cool, understanding that pro ball is different than college ball not playing hero, and living to fight another day. Qbs on both sides of the equation show this is true: besides Wentz, there's RG3, Cam Newton, Trey Lance, and hopefully not but maybe Tua Tagovailoa--guys who didn't learn the skill and had abbreviated careers. On the other side are the guys who did, most famously Brady, but also Drew Brees, Matt Ryan, and both Mannings (and I'd argue Eli was better at it than Peyton, at least early in their careers). It's not sexy, but it's professional, it's grown up, and it's necessary if you want to have a proper nfl career.

@@scottwerner279 Not really. Big Ben had his share of injury worries, and they added up over the course of his career. Sure, he played a long time, but his overall level of play grew worse and worse each season. By the end of it, watching Big Ben play was like watching Mohammed Ali come out of retirement for an exhibition match while suffering from cumulative CTE and Parkinson's disease.
It was sad, like watching a bus full of school children with no brakes slowly roll down a mountain pass until it eventually careened off a cliff.

I like your argument. Those men you mentioned (Brady, Mannings, Brees) were the epidome of pocket passers. They didn't dance around a lot like ballerinas or make explosive runs when the pocket collapsed, maybe rolled out but that was about it. Mostly, they were highly intelligent football players who knew how to direct their offense to make big plays. It was not an uncommon sight to see them bark a half dozen signals and adjust blocking or routes once they analyzed the situation and the defense's posture. Not every play was a masterpiece of course but they consistently did well or excellent, and all of them won a Superbowl at some point. It wasn't flashy, but it was smart football.
I'm an Eagles fan, so Hurts, for example, has been trying to do both recently, playing as both a pocket passer and be a rushing threat. It's had success last season, but it's also incredibly risky (as with Wentz. I remember being speechless when I watched his injury live). One single wrong move, and he could become another Carson Wentz. I also notice he doesn't seem to be in control of the offense a lot. They line up and just snap the ball. Almost never changing the play or adjusting blocks. Perhaps that's common for rushing QBs because the staff just assume if the play goes sideways, he can just rush out of danger.
Eagles fan here and Wentz’s downward spiral has always been interesting. The point of no return imo was when big dick nick won us the super bowl that probably should’ve been wentz’s moment. After that his confidence was shot and he was never the same
I honestly thought the Wentz/Foles situation was going to be another Simms/Hostetler situation. When Parcells retired after winning the Super Bowl in 1990 Ray Handley came in and named Hostetler the starting QB instead of Simms. I gave the Eagles credit at the time for not giving up on Wentz like the Giants did with Simms, but it ultimately didn’t work. Granted I still don’t think going with Foles would have been the answer either. He’s never played a full season and in 2018 they begged Wentz to play as soon as he was ready because Foles wasn’t cutting it early in the season.

Something that i felt deserved a mention was Nick Foles’ performance in the 2018 regular season. Eagles were 6-7 when wentz went down. Foles comes in and beats the Rams (who i believe were 10-3 at the time), and then the Texans the next week (who were 10-4). He put up an absolutely insane statline in the game against Houston too, 400+ passing yards and a clutch game winning drive. I think that’s when things got bad in the foles v wentz discussion. Sure in 2017 wentz had them 11-2 and Foles just sorta walked into the 1 seed, but in 2018, Foles got them TO the playoffs.
Yeah and were essentially one play away from going to back-to-back nfc championship game appearances too. The 2018 divisional playoff game against the saints was so close for the eagles

It’s really sad to see his downfall. I started seriously watching the NFL during his run of form in his 2nd year with the Eagles, and even as a Patriots fan, I thought this guy was 100% going to win the MVP. Sadly, he just went downhill since and it goes to show you how brutal the NFL can be.
He didn't have a downfall. He is out of the NFL for.the 2023 season. It happens to players. Matt Ryan, Mitch Trubisky & others are dealing with the same. It happens every season--some players are out of the NFL. Just stick to the facts instead of, speculating about mental & medical conditions you can't prove he has or had. Carson Wentz is not playing football this season. He didn't have a Josh Gordon incident (violation of substance abuse policy). Yep, the NFL is a meat grinder, even with the efforts it's made to make the game less dangerous. At least Wentz should have enough money to last for generations.
Wentz's issues are primarily between his ears. It's pretty apparent he became a head case at some point. Maybe the Clowney hit to the noggin did more damage than we realized. Wentz was actually really impressive down the stretch in 2019, since that Eagles offense was lacking any playmakers...yet they somehow got hot and got into the playoffs with Wentz playing great. But clearly it's been bad ever since. His competitive ego must still have him wanting to be a starter, but his only path to stay in the NFL is to be a backup and seize a moment if it ever comes up. Of course, he has plenty of money (presumably) so maybe he'll just want to disappear and go fishing or something the rest of his life.

He always did those boneheaded head-first dives to gain yards, when he had no reason to. He was as reckless as they come.

If you're an eagles fan you know there were problems way before the Seattle playoff game.
As a diehard Eagles fan I was waiting for Wentz to reach out to former NFL QBs for guidance specifically Kurt Warner, Payton Manning etc. Quarterbacks that made their careers by getting the ball out quickly due to their elite pre snap defense recognition.
Unfortunately that never happened. Carson always decided to stick with trainers that he knew that would not hold him accountable. It’s very unfortunate because even to this day I still believe he has talent but he has to work with someone that’s going to hold him accountable.
FYI I put Cam Newton in this same category as Wentz. Both quarterbacks unfortunately hold unto the football for too long.

Carson Wentz highly contributed to the eagles superbowl season, and it was their first ever Superbowl victory. For that he should be remembered in a good light in Philadelphia.

He's never been the same since he got high/lowed in that game against the Rams and he got injured. To me, that was where it all came apart for his career...he's never been as good as he was that year.
To me he doesn't a a physical issue, he has a mental issue. There isn't many players in NFL history that can say they got injured and watched their back up win the SB (and SB MVP), and the ones that did were never the same after.

So you change things, subconsciously if nothing else. You move differently, maybe you don’t trust your line or your playcaller as much. All of a sudden you’re not the player you were and that makes it worse.

He's got his money, got his SuperBowl ring, got his time in the spotlight. As much as an Eagles fan I would love to see Wentz return to the field and revive his career. There's a really good video out there by I think Brett Kollmann that shows the drastic changes in his playstyle and decision making by the injuries. Specifically his ACL tear and how it absolutely altered his scrambling and pocket positioning, and that high/low hit making him seem to be hesitant to take a hit or take a chance or try to force out a throw.
Injuries really do change a player.

Eagles drafted Foles and he was familiar with the Eagles older RPO playbook ripped from Oregon. Foles had a 27 TD 2 INT season in Philly, he threw an NFL record 7 TDs against the Raiders, and was named SB MVP in his Philly career alone so watch the hate lol. 2017 was a true miracle🦅

The Eagles have a reputation for burning out QBs, that was the case with, Cunningham, McNabb & Vick who was a shell of himself after playing for the Eagles. All of that dog hate he got was hard on him, according to his wife. Wentz also got a lot of hate from Foles fans & the Philly sports media. All the fan negativity & bad media coverage added to all the pressure of expectation a season brings. It also undermined his leadership. Let's hope the Eagles don't wear Hurts down too.

As an eagles fan, it was so exciting that he was living up to the hype. I feel like a few games into 2017 we could watch something else at halftime because they were smoking teams. So many times wentz would be In a pile of defenders and somehow pop out of it. When he went down I literally wanted to cry. I was furious when we originally chose hurts over wentz, even tho every eagles fan pretends they weren’t. I still root for him and feel bad the way it’s gone down. I feel like he didn’t get a fair shake in Indy.

At the point he got benched, it was honestly time because he was broken. I honestly am one who always loved the Hurts pick because I followed him at Alabama, watched him go thru the Tua adversity & bounce back from that, watched him get benched again at Alabama & then watched him go on a Potential Heisman run at Oklahoma, so I was wit it from the beginning. I honestly felt when we landed Hurts it was a blessing & that he honestly should've been a 1st Rounder. I have never seen a Heisman QB Candidate be a second round draft pick. Brilliant Pick on Howie's part. However, I didn't expect Hurts to come in and start. My hopes was for Hurts to just learn behind Wentz. I mean shit, we had to get a reliable backup. Foles was gone, McGown was a thousand years old, and I ain't even gonna speak the QB's name that we sent to the 49ers, because he was HOT BUNZ & couldn't backup a choir. In the end, Wentz just mentally broke down. I don't know if it was all the injuries or the Foles Statue, but he just basically forced Jalen Hurts into the job because he checked out on us. These are the facts.

He had a lot of bad injuries. This didn't go well with a stubborn streak that kept him from adapting to his new physical reality.
Care to list all of the "bad injuries" Carson Wentz had? I dare you. List how many seasons he missed with all the "bad injuries."
Wentz' career was a mix of bad luck with injuries, bad management and some myths (or facts) about him that we'll only know when all the players get old and start spilling the beans. Both he and the Eagles were one of the most injured teams from 2017 to 2020, so even when Wentz was playing, the rest of the team was ravaged by injuries, hence why Josh McCown's WR1 was Greg Ward, because he was also Wentz' WR1 for most of that season and he still managed to throw for 4000 yards, the only QB in Eagles history.
The management sucked from 2018 to 2020. Howie Roseman was way over his head, overthinking the draft and trying to get the unpopular talent that would shock the world, instead he got some of the biggest busts of this last decade. Wentz never had a WR even close to the talent of Devonta Smith, let alone having Smith and AJ Brown. I'm not saying I would want him back though, just that the only season he had a team around him (that wasn't even close to how good the current roster is), he almost won an MVP.
And the "myths" are all the shady stuff surrounding his leadership. The media was constantly trying to undermine him by leaking "anonymous letters" saying he was a bad teammate, then Jim Irsay did what he did to him. What I find interesting is that his teammates always went out of their way to say they liked him, every single one of his instagram pics has guys he played with saying good things to and about him.
So yea, we'll never know the truth. One thing I can say is that "leadership" is something we fans can't see, it's something we have to trust the media and insiders. I say this because if you watch Wentz mic'd up he always seemed to be a great leader, motivating his teammates, celebrating but the media always said otherwise. With Hurts he says "I had a purpose before anyone had an opinion" and everybody does back flips screaming how he's a fantastic leader. I don't see it, but I BELIEVE it because it's what the media and his teammates says. Everything points towards Hurts being a fantastic leader and teammate, while with Wentz most things point towards him being a bad leader.

Wentz is why I was so skeptical of Mahomes for so long.
Wentz has pretty much become the Brandon Roy of the NFL. Both guys were poised to become elite, only for injuries to get in their way and flame them out.

Walton missed his first two years with injuries, got healthy, was 2x all NBA, 1 time league MVP and 1x finals MVP before his legs gave out again nearly for good. He accomplished more with more dominance at his brief peak and then altered his game to a bench role winning several more titles and sixth man awards. If we’re sticking to Trail Blazers Sam Bowie might be a better fit.

Imagine telling someone in the middle of the 2017 season that Nick Foles would have a better career than Carson Wentz.
I think another issue with his career was the teams injuries. From 2017 to 2020 the Eagles had injuries at every single position group and in 2020 it finally hit the O-Line cause any QB back there to be a shell of themself.
Every team is hit by injuries. But how about that: The talent around him made him look special? Heck, even his back up was better than him that SB year.
@@FoxxyBrown1111 The Super Bowl team wasn’t as talented as other super bowl teams. As of now there’s like 3 potential Hall of Famers on that team. Kelce, Lane, and Fletch. Even that year the Eagles won the SB they lost 4 Captains in Wentz, Jason Peters, Jordan Hicks, and Darren Sproles. All fundamental pieces to the team throughout the decade. Idk how many teams in league history can lose their starting QB, MLB, LT, and go on to win the super bowl. Wentz was different than Foles. Both did great things in their own way. Foles is and has been great under pressure throughout his entire football career. Wentz always plays superman ball and that year it made him look like a poor man’s current Mahomes. All i have to say to people is to go back and watch each of those games. Wentz did things that I hadn’t seen guys do
@@jordanburden7018 Good post. Otoh, I was never sold on Wentz. Foles has a much better delivery, stronger arm, pocket passer, showed efiiciency on talented teams. A recipe for winning QBs. Actually its a crime Foles got to all the worst teams he ever could go to. That gave him the label of a back up QB without practise reps. He deserves to be a folk hero in Philly forever. Wentz otoh is just another 1st rounder given tons of chances to show off (his shortcomings). The real tragedy is Foles, a humble guy, not Wentz laughing his axx off having fooled everybody.

One thing no one mentioned is that he wasn't all that great in the pocket. Most of his production was based on play action or scramble broken plays. He was never the greatest decision maker and once those injuries settled in his ability to play in the pocket was crucial and never really became great. I do believe he still capable of playing average ball but I think his personality plays a big part in that as well
Yes. And average isnt enough in the NFL. Except for coaches unable to judge QB talent. Average QBs make careers out of it. But thats another long long story.

No he's not... what he is though is one of the last examples of a now dead trend... an elite team winning a SB with a mediocre QB and doing so by having an elite defense, fantastic run game, and elite WR play.... we used to see it all the time, but ever since 2013 the standard for the quality of QB required for taking a team all the way, is now an "elite or we lucky to make it past the wildcard round" type of QB (see modern day Tennessee titans) so the Days of the 2012 Ravens, 2002 Buccaneers, 92' to 96' Cowboys, 76' Raiders, or all the way back to the 66-67 Packers.... the days of winning championships with an elite defense, elite HB, pretty good WR and above average QB is a thing of the past.... which is a damn shame I get tired of seeing these 1st and 10 in the 1st Qtr, with 5 Wide outs and a QB in the shotgun on every team, every game.... just gets old....

First time watching your video and I usually don’t watch anything but the teams I root for, but after a few minutes in you had me laughing 😂 I like your combination of humor paired with the story you telling.
If Wentz still had the desire and drive to play, I cannot imagine he is done. He might have to spend a year or two in the CFL or XFL, but it could really benefit him and help him get back to at least close to what he was.

I was at that Rams vs. Eagles game where Wentz tore his ACL. The Eagles crowd was beyond shocked and felt it was over for us.
Kind of makes you wonder how many college players are overlooked. You just never know how someone's career will go.

The unluckiest players are those whose careers ended in camp. With injuries. Before ever stepping on a field for a regular season game... Unlucky are those ignored in the draft or drafted low. For every Romo, Brady, Warner, Kitna, Purdy, Delhomme, etc, there are 1.000 "camp arms" never given a chance to play. That my dear is unlucky... Wentz has his axx shoved up with millions of unworthy dollars. One of the most lucky NFL players ever.

Great vid. Thorough retelling. The only part I disagree with is all the remarks about Carson's teammates not supporting him. While there were a bunch of "anonymous sources" being quoted in articles about him, most of the locker room, including leaders of the team, consistently went out of their way to adamantly deny the reports and really vouch for him. And he's still great friends with all of the top leaders of the team to this day (Kelce, Lane, Cox). He had a lot of support. Just obviously not everyone in the org.

As an Eagles fan, seeing Wentz slowly get worse and worse every year was terrible to watch. He was such a promising player, and the city loved him. It's hard to say what really went wrong with his career, but it still sucked to see.

I used to live down the street from Carson in Fargo. Only time you saw him was on his moped to and from class. Constant party’s around him and he stayed so focused. Breaks my heart he didn’t pan out
He hasn't reached rock bottom. He's been paid 120 million so far and he has his family. He was never the same after his serious knee injury. He helped get Philly into the Super Bowl.
I feel bad for Wentz he was one of my favorite players as soon as he was drafted he played so good to keep getting unlucky then he lost his confidence in the process and it was just down from there and the colts year was pretty good besides the last game really and the colts gave up on him the media has been against him since 2019 aswell

He did get unlucky at times, but I’m sorry when you have a QBR of 5.5( scale of 1-100) playing the worst team in the league as 17 point favorites in a “win and you’re in” situation, you deserve a ton of criticism.
As a die hard eagles fan I was all behind Wentz but since he's left I noticed obviously he has personality issues. It showed by his communication with teammates to his lack of leadership in areas. He definitely had the talent but he's hard headed too so it is what it is
The 2017 super bowl is one Ill never forget. I was in my senior year of highschool at the time and watched that game from Matt Bryant's home theatre as I was good friends with one of his stepsons around that time. Good times.
