  • Talks Fail Between Egypt & Ethiopia Over Dam on the Nile | Vantage with Palki Sharma
The latest talks between Egypt, Sudan & Ethiopia over water sharing have failed. Egypt believes that its water security is at risk due to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. Ethiopia has built the dam despite Egypt's concerns.
The dam is yet to become fully operational. Egypt wants to secure water guarantees before the dam is complete, so that Ethiopia can't shut off the tap even during drought years. Palki Sharma tells you more.

Ethiopia should look into nuclear power plants, and other green forms of energy. This will make them less dependant on the hydroelectricity through the dam. With reduced dependency on the dam, comes less of a need to restrict so much of the water supply. Increased flow of the Nile river will resolve and dissolve this dispute between both nations. Ethiopia cannot rely solely on the hydroelectric dam, indefinitely; even supposed "developed countries" (countries are always developing, just as an FYI) require other sources of energy and 'nuclear' is a powerful and study alternative. Think of it as a miniature sun/battery or 'heart' that all major countries (that are geopolitically active) need to order to secure their civilization's electric system. A temporary pause to that circuitry will immediately affect their civilisation [circuitry] system. I doubt they would even be able to make use to their railway. My point is, Ethiopia really does not to diversify their sources of reliable, green energy. And nuclear is an effect alternative that will suit Ethiopia will l very well, - and on all fronts: not only will it secure the growth, safety and power needs of their country, but it will also prevent Ethiopia from making an enemy of Egypt; which at worst could spiral into unnecessary, embarrassing and inconvenient warfare... All 'that' inconvenience, because of 'ONE' dam??? - 'ONE' relatively [un]'stable' power source??? And how stable is that power source if it understandably triggers a war between two nations who are supposed to be friendly and on genuinely good terms with each other? The possibility and understandable threat of war should and will be avoided. The reason being, if a war broke out between nations, then that would mean that the dam was destroyed (at varying time frames; before or after the war).
This would escalate to include the following atrocities that neither nations deserve or want for their respective civilizations, i.e. the loss of human life, embarrassment to the continent/Africa's reputation, destruction of properties, landmarks, etc.
The dam's 'sole' existence will 'not' be allowed to cause warfare. You [Ethiopia] need to diversify your [electric] sources of power, Ethiopia. The dams sole existence causes too much friction, geopolitically; which ultimately, ruins the extent of the dam's stability as a reliable source of power. Diminishing the Nile _(especially given its importance, as the life blood of Egypt, is cause for the dams destruction, which might spiral into war... The outcome is stupid. Avoid it)._
Conclusion: One way or another; in the near or distant future, Ethiopia will experience the crucial need to diversify their [electric] power supply. Why not start right away, Ethiopia? This will solve 'ALL' your problems, in the short-term and long-term, it will also make Egypt a likely, ['formidable'] ally of Ethiopia, militarily, - but against the West!
SIDE NOTE: Intuitively, I have a strong hunch that ENTP ('narcissists' - in which the majority of that neuropersonality and brain-formation are often born comorbid with it) are highly prevalent in the Ethiopia's government. Their covert agenda (between themselves, i.e. other narcissist, and highly 'SOCIOPATHIC' ENTP) is to cause friction between Egypt and Ethiopia. They are trying to lay the foundations to trigger a war between Ethiopia and Egypt. ENTP-narcissits are highly influencial between the scenes/curtains of the Ethiopian government. They want to threaten and inconvenience Egypt's future (afrocentrists). 75-85% of ENTP are born with narcissistic personality disorder, while your average ENTP factually has varying levels of sociopathy (hint: their trademark apathy, need for 'fun' stimulation to avoid feeling deeply disturbed by "boredom" - a torturous state of being for the ENTP consciousness. NPD magnifies this effect considerably). Narcissisism/NPD, and 'sociopathy' is the neuro-psychological mechanism that is most as play behind Ethiopian government boards discussion making. - Puuurge themmm!!!

What Ethiopia building is a hydroelectric dam. Which means the water hit turbines to generate electricity and go down it’s natural course. The dam is in cool highlands of Ethiopia, where evaporation loss is very minimal, unlike Egypt’s dam in the desert with large evaporation loss. Ethiopia’s dam has net benefits, that is how Sudan sees it. Egypt’s goal is hegemony using colonial time water sharing agreements between, you guessed it, UK and UK 🇬🇧

Thank God, the creator God, who knew the tricks of the Egyptians in advance, made the origin of the Blue Nile from Ethiopia.

what is mean by a binding agreement ?
if it mean water share agreement, all other riparian countries ( 11) should be included and come to table otherwise it won’t be a sustainable agreement.
What kind of Binding Agreement Egypt wants on Nile.
Egypt insists, Ethiopia to sign a binding agreement which respect the colonial era agreement that gives a monopoly over the Blue Nile water use and prevent Ethiopians development. and demanding a Binding that doesn’t consider Changing in hydrology among many factors, global warming’s effect is decreasing the volume of Nile, so, tomorrow, you won’t find a volume that we signed agreement about as a result.

      here are some points:
      Ethiopia’s annual water use 10 BCM vs Egypt’s 75BCM,
According to USAID report 2020, 9.5 millions Ethiopians are exposed to serious shortages of water and 1000s of livestock are dying.
Egypt per capital water use of greater than 2202 liters vis-à-vis Ethiopia’s 275 liters
Egypt is greater than 95% electrified whereas Ethiopia is less than 40% electrified.
efficient irrigation of Egypt’s agriculture , adaptation of neighboring Israel technologies, can save billions cubic meter of water
if Aswan dam reduces it current evaporation loss of 20 BCM to 10 as per 1959 agreement, the saving can support the lives of nearly 3 million Egyptians at rate of current per capital water use.

Egypt wants Ethiopia to commit in a written agreement that it will continue to share the waters of the Nile especially in times of drought. I don't get why Ethiopia is against this. What happened in the past should not prevent us from progressing now.
Africa supported Ethiopia's right to build the dam but it doesn't support Ethiopia's refusal to share the waters of the Nile.

As an African, I love Palki Sharma & other Indian news organizations... but I have beginning to notice some twist of narratives from these news organizations as regard to Africa, like calling the recent coups in Africa as Scramble of Africa. Scrambling of African natural resources in the past by outside Powers led to colonialism, but the African people are doing the opposite by kicking out neo- colonists. As India rises fast in global geo-politics, they are subtlely extending their hate of rise of China to Africa because of Chinese involvement in Africa infrastructural quest. African Union have their work cought out for them when a rapid growing powerful India would reveal their intentions on Africa with respect to the so called Indian Ocean & associated Islands closer to African shores.

Some things that were missed in this report is that a vast majority of the Nile’s water comes from Ethiopia. So much so that a mega dam won’t affect their water whatsoever.
Also, as another commenter said, Egypt is moreso attempting to maintain regional hegemony especially over the Nile by harkening back to old British colonial standards. In fact, similar to China, many headwaters in the region begin in Ethiopia so this row is strictly geopolitical in nature. I’d go so far as to say that Egypt may quietly be behind a lot of the turmoil in Ethiopia right now.
But I think things will be resolved. Ethiopia isn’t using the water for irrigation which would actually pose a real threat and the hydroelectric output from the GERD will boost development for the whole region. So on the one hand, Ethiopia would have the opportunity to mature into a regional player much to the chagrin of Cairo but on the other hand that development would ultimately benefit Egypt by creating more mature markets to do business with.

What country has ever signed away its sovereignty over its resources? Egypt's insistence on a binding agreement is absurd. Ethiopia is right in not wanting to put an albatross on future generations with a ridiculous agreement, especially since it generates up to 90 percent of the Nile's stream flow and Egypt is not giving up anything of value in exchange, not that Ethiopia wants one. The dam is a hydroelectric dam and water must flow. That should suffice for the two downstream countries. Ethiopia has no intention of harming them. Egypt dug a hole for itself by internationalizing the issue and attempting to involve the US, the Arab League, and European nations, which do not have Ethiopia's interest at heart. Trump famously egged Egypt to blow the dam. Go figure.

But the way they went about it for 150 years - repeated invasions, corralling the West and blocking funds, and diplomatic warfare against Ethiopia, has been highly crude and offensive to Ethiopians. Egyptians have no prayer. They just do not know the Ethiopians. That does not mean Ethiopians want to harm them. Interesting factoid: the first Americans that set foot on Ethiopian soil were confederate generals of the American civil war, 42 of them, who were employed by the Khedives of Egypt in the 1880s. General Sherman was happy to see confederate officers leave the country and work as mercenaries elsewhere. They were all harried to the sea. (Source, US Embassy Addis Ababa).@@growtocycle6992

Instead of decade long debate, why not Egypt construct a reservoir of similar or larger scale, collect water when released and use it when water is held in Ethiopia. It is simple math. Egypt would truly be affected ONLY if the water is held in Ethiopia, diverted in Ethiopia and prevented from entering Egypt. However, the lame argument is about water being held, but not diverted somewhere else. The purpose of Hydro is to hold it and release it.

The report has a fundamental problem on the pictorial presentation of the source of Nile. It should start from the countries where the river starts mainly Ethiopia for 86% of the water and shall end in Egypt and not the other way round. The dam is for electricity use which does not have significant impact on lower reparian countries but rather a positive one of managed water flow for efficient agricultural use with out the incidence of flood. Furthermore, Ethiopia has the right for developmemt and Egypt by no means is entitled to a colonial era agreement of water share. We will finish the GERD and start new 100 dams on the ABAY our ABAY and its contributors like the Jemma river. We will ascertain our regional hegemony along with our fellow African brothers in the spirit of Pan Africanism and Egypt is welcome to join our leadership. We will become a Great Power!!!

Cuz they are filling the dam at a fast rate without considering Egypt's quota
As you probably don't know a dam has to be filled to a certain point of water altitude to fulfill its purpose
To have the water pressure that the turbines was designed to operate effectively on
Now this wouldn't be a big problem if Ethiopia filled the dam in a moderate rate
That would affect Egypt anyway but in a manageable way
Egypt didn't object to Ethiopia for building the dam
Obviously the dam was under construction for probably over 10 years
Egypt is objecting to the rate of filling that affects water quota and hence, the delta and sea water that escapes to the basin due to the nile's weakened flow
Ruining the delta , the agricultural area in egypt (the rest is mostly desert)
Not just that it affects the lifestyle of Egyptians and their consumption of water
It's not just the amount of water, it's a complex problem affected by many factors

The talks didn't fail, they are to meet for the next round in Addis Ababa in September. Ethiopia will never accept Sudan and Egypt getting 100% of the water as "guaranteed" by their colonial agreements with Britain of which Ethiopia as an independent nation was excluded from. We want a mutually beneficial agreement that recognizes our right to use the rivers in our territory, and they want us to sign a binding agreement saying they will decide if and how we use those rivers. I am confident through good faith negotiations we will reach an agreement and we will all be able to use the river in a dair and equitable manner to develop our respective countries. However if anyone thinks we are going to agree to be beholden to a colonial agreement between the Britain and her colonies over OUR waters, then it means you don't understand why we have always remained independent.
Regardless the talks are far from over so you should stop trying to make things look bleak just to get some attention for your posts. You have potential, do better.

GERD is meant to generate electricity and water flows to Sudan and Egypt as usual . Egypt is well aware of this more than anyone . But ; Egypt opposes the construction of GERD. The hidden agenda is that GERD creates a golden opportunity, providing regulated water flow throughout the year ,for Sudan to expand its vast farmland . This automatically reduces the amount of water that flows to Egypt . In addition to this; it enables Sudan to harvest three times in a year Which is a blow to Egypt . Egypt never accepts fair water share which is against its hegemony over Nile water. It insists for a binding agreement swayed 2 itself denying Ethiopia's right 2 use Nile .That's z basic reason for the stalemate signing z agreement .The current civil war in sudan is engineered by
Egypt to destabilize Sudan so that it can't take advantage of the opportunity created by GERD.This is the reality that many don't understand . Egypt works day in day out tirelessly not to let the civil war stop which enables Sudan to engage itself in agriculture development hand in hand with the increase in GERD construction . Sudan should wake up and stop the civil war among themselves . ✌️🇪🇹🇪🇹🇪🇹 ✌️ 🇸🇩🇸🇩🇸🇩

It's like someone coming to your birthday party and telling you you can't have the cake. 86% of the water come from Ethiopia and water is a resource that a country need to wield and use. And 60% of Ethiopia doesn't have electricity and we still have draughts in our country we have the right to use our resources

What Egypt is concerned about is more of a risk to Ethiopian than Egypt, because if the dam were to hold the water for just one day, there would be a flood disaster in Ethiopia. If Egypt was smart, it should attempted to charge Ethiopia for drainage. As such, they would both realise its a win win situation for all.
