  • Can you write the climax before the opening act of a story?
    Well ‪@ARRahman‬ did that.
He composed 'Roobaroo' the climax track for 'Rang De Basanti' even before a single line of the script was written. How?
Roobaroo sung by Naresh Iyer & AR Rahman holds hope for future.
    Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra recalls:
Initially it was called Young Guns of India, focusing on the heroes of Indian armed resistance against the might of the British Empire.
And when the script evoloved as Rang De Basanti - it presented the realities of 21st century India, . a society divided by religion and cast, cursed by corruption.
Rang De Basanti became a collective representation of protests by youngsters, and presented India a new form of protest - Candle March.
It was the music by AR Rahman - that bound all these factors together.
Rang De Basanti featured Aamir Khan, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni, Kunal kapoor, Alice Patten, Soha Ali Khan, Waheeda Rehman, Kiran Kher.

If we watch from 1:13:30 of Rang De Basanti movie, there is a change of music from tabla to rock beat which starts from 1.13:40.
The situation before 1.13.40 was ravan dahan which is mythological and latter is a escape scene.
Only AR Rahman brain can combine. The music is so situational and changes according to seasons of the movie.
EP33 gave more in depth complexity of making Rang de basanti compared to EP32 . The point of two parallel tracks one which is before 1947 and other which is new age college students.
And finally bringing the story to a single track or theme. It is very difficult in directors point of view. And the same depicts with Rakeysh's jis narration here.
Toughest part is how AR Rahman absorbed it and gave brilliant music. A 24 carat gold coating to the movie.
Another thing is if some one observed, he also scored for "The legend of Bhagat singh" which is kind of similar story of freedom fighters.
But Rang De Basathi music never resemble Legend of Bhat singh and vice versa.
This is the greatness of ARR. RDB movie has so many beats attracts students or youngsters. It was kind of "Rock star" movie. But at the same time a song with Lata ji brought honey to ears and tears to eyes.
Mixing, blending, vocal selection, understanding movie some times more than a director thinks , using new talent but at the same time working with legends. these are beyond imagination.
And it is just for one movie ARR worked is what we are talking about.
O2india, this episode is one of complex ones ever produced out of 33 count. Crisp and clear questions to the dignitary extracted clear in depth view and thought process of how movie made and how ARR music was a cherry on top.
    Great work o2india.

You are as expressive as ARR's music for such an innovative and complicated one of a kind script sir. Your review and views are just so point on and truly, Rahman proved why he's a 24 karat Gold for this movie. Had this been filmed in Hollywood, he could have brought us more Oscars and a little before than 2009. Like for many of his other films, his music is itself a soul for this film too despite a power-packed script. I'm sure we'll all be in awe of his genius even after coming in another life much later..

It is quite difficult to fathom the effect of this beautiful movie without the soulful music by ARR and the hard hitting lyrics by Prasoon. I didn't know what sulphuric acid was until I heard these linies : Nata ye sannata hai dekho lambu shor hai, har din ye budbud karta H2SO4 hai

When a great director like him said that he doesn't have that intellect to analyse Rahman's music, I feel i shouldn't even comment any further. So, I prefer to keep mum on this as ultimately after getting tired with my so called analysis on his music, I will again have to listen to his music to de stress myself. So why stress yourself with analysis paralysis when his music does just the opposite!

Great work with ur videos so thanks a lot! But there is one thing that i crave as a fan of Rahman’s music that hasn’t been covered much which is How Rahman composes and came up with his unique melodies and the amazing sound quality he achieved right from the beginning when no one else was able to in Indian music scene.
You are always focusing more on the movies and the ideas behind the movie and the script etc but I’m not much interested about the movies but more about how Rahman makes his music!
Can you please focus more on the methods and techniques that he uses to compose and record his music! That will be the greatest service to the world of music! Knowing this is most important for all upcoming musicians! It’s like learning how Einstein’s mind works, what are his methods and techniques that he uses both voluntarily and involuntarily! How he makes his melodies is where the magic is and the most important thing! Please cover this more!
You did episodes on so many of his legendary movies but u haven’t focused on how he composed any of those melodies, which raag did he improvise on etc etc! We don’t know anything about how he made the melodies and rhythms of Taal, the melodies of Roja, how he achieved such high audio quality in Kadhalan!
Go behind the scenes, ask him to show how he composed his legendary melodies, how he recorded them, do a sort of Masterclasses of how he made all his great songs from the past from Roja to Kadhalan to Kadhal Desam to Duet to Padayappa to Rhythm to Mudhalvan/Naayak to Saathiya to Boys to Sivaji to Guru! U did whole episodes on Roja but didn’t explore how did he make Yeh haseen Wadiyan or any of the other songs? Yeh Haseen Waadiyan was the first Rahman song I ever heard and loved! Did u try to explore how he came up with that tune and it’s melody, did he improvise on a raag or did he just hum the melody and how did the song evolve as he composed it layer by layer? How hard or easy was it to come up with the tune? How did he record it to such a high sound quality? U can and should do at least 10 minutes Masterclass on each song exploring the making of the song and the methods and techniques involved sitting with Rahman in his studio in front of a keyboard! That can be a show that goes on for so long and be the greatest academic wealth when it comes to music. U can do one 10 minute episode a month on one song each based on how busy Rahman is!
How did he make compose the melody of Jashn-e-Bahara and the unique Rhythm and Percussion of Azeemo-shaan-shehenshah from Jodhaa Akbar! Did Rahman come up with the Percussion or Did Sivamani? Rahman isn’t a percussionist! How does he compose such unique percussion pieces in for eg. Taal
The series can be called “How Rahman Made ___________”

    • @anantha1201
      @anantha1201 Před 2 lety +1

I loved your curiosity a lot but if you heard Rakeysh Mehra himself in this episode he only said one thing. Don't even dare to go near or think how ARR thinks something so wild and unique. You just got to leave it to himself!
Having said that, it's a brilliant idea to take up really going behind the scenes in his studios to see how he conceives or composes or get us some inside scoops and bytes on that. We all fans are eager to know every bit how he did something that way.
In fact, you can go and check ARR-Arijit interview where Arijit asks so many questions and does a small thesis on how Rahman could compose something so brilliant. A few songs atleast but you'll see Arr opened up better with him than with anyone I could see so far and he explained few intricacies sitting in front of his piano 🎹. That was one of the best interviews musically to say.
But to do something like that needs none other than ARRs time and permission which is not an easy thing to get for any interviewer even if he's personally close to him. So, instead of thinking that we can get a peep into the musical Einstein's brain, all we can just do is to be content with the fact that he's enormously God gifted and extremely hard working too to make something of such standards.
Even I wonder not only about ARR but about so many legends that do they have something special that we ordinary ppl don't have. Are they do destined or is it cultivated from their side. For me, i think it works both ways!

And as Mr. Srinivas says (In his reply to your comment) it depends if Mr. Rahman is willing and can spare that much time. As he is always looking forward to his next project, and it's is left to teams like us to try and alalyse/ understand intricasies of his compositions. But allow us to assure you, that we will certainly try and take this up further. Very warmly... o2 india team.

Dear o2 team, thanks for this wonderful series. My entire family including my 12 and 7 year old sons eagerly awaot every new episode.
This episode with rakesh mehra was fantastic. Roobaru has been anthem. However I strongly felt you should overcome copyright issues in showing original songs and tracks. Covers are a big let down 'here'. When rakesh talks about specific musical moments in the film it becomes essential to show them or atleast let it be demonstrated on a audio or video player there. For such a fine piece of testimony by rakesh, not seeing the actual audio video pieces was really miserable. This can be many times more fantastic and immersive if you feature original music and avoid irrelevant covers. Sincerely request you to find a way around the copyright issues. I am sure you can. Thanks and good luck. Will definitely continue with rest of the episodes.
