I Failed A Class?! Law School 1L Grades Reaction

- Hope you all enjoyed the video! This was my reaction to my 1L grades from law school. I just finished my 1L year of law school at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. My Fall grades for law school were pretty good, but my Spring grades were not that good. In fact, I did the law school equivalent of failing a class. As a law student, it is very hard to fail a class, but I basically did in my professional responsibility class. PR was by far my weakest class in law school.

For all of my law school classes this year, I had to go to the ASU downtown campus in downtown Phoenix. I just finished up my law school finals and law school exams the other week. This was my reaction once my law school grades came back. Most of my law school final exams were multiple choice, or issue spotter essays. Law school essays are pretty unique, so I had to adapt to how they are done. This past semester, I took Criminal Law (Crim Law), Constitutional Law (Con Law), Property Law, Legal Advocacy, and Professional Responsibility (PR). Overall, I did alright, but nowhere near as good as my first semester of law school. I definitely enjoyed classes like Contract Law, Tort Law, and Civil Procedure (Civ Pro) more than my classes from this semester. Despite not doing great, I still managed to do well enough that I'm likely to have a law school class ranking. Even with the poor performance in my law classes, I have absolutely loved my time at ASU law. How were your grades in school this semester/year? Thanks again for watching, and I'll see you next time!!

I clicked on this video for solace for my bad semester only to find out that you did better than me and did less work. The depression spiral deepens.
I’m sorry!!! Try not to stress about it too much! Everyone adapts to law school at different speeds so no need to stress about one bad semester! Just focus on improving for next time!! Most professors are more than happy to sit down and walk you through your exam once the next semester starts so definitely reach out to them!
Considering your circumstances, you did quite well. Congratulations and Godspeed.
Thank you!
Always baffles me how the grading works in law school. Still super proud of you. Miss our sweet Arya ❤
I’m still trying to figure it out sometimes too 😂 Miss her too
The one good thing -AZ state U is a Tier 1 school, so you won't have trouble placing in a position. You made a 10000% better decision than I did in choosing a school. Grades, unless you are trying for Law Review, really are not going to be critical for law firms; externship work in 3rd year can be critical as well.
I went to Whittier Law School, a Tier IV school which closed, though fortunately my rank was good, and I was allowed to do as many externships/clerkships in the Los Angeles area to obtain references, and it was fortunate that I knew the Dean of Whittier personally. At least you don't have to worry about the bar exam, I have that in July. These courses in law school should be structured similar to bar exam questions and organization, but professors don't want to be told anything about how to do their courses.
Yeah I definitely made a good choice with ASU! You made some good points here that law students should definitely pay attention to. Best of luck with the bar!
How did you do this year in school?
Imagine failing 3 modules in Agriculture(Animal Science) 1st year. Their isn't even a community you can turn too to vent out your personal frustration of failing the plants mahn. But on a positive note I met all my credit requirements and I'm a 2nd Year regardless so it all that counts for something. Another phyrric victory under the belt 🫠🫠🙂🙂🙂
Are you getting type of tuition scholarship? You have to be in the top 8% of your class to get a big law job that pays 225k. If you take loans, the current interest rate is 8%. You could be looking at 50k to 80k in loans at a 8% interest rate, which means you need 130k job offer when you graduate. If you drop out, you could save yourself from a lifetime of debt.
I am getting a pretty sizeable scholarship. I will still graduate with a decent amount of debt, but average federal loan interest rate is a bit lower than that. Median lawyer salary is about $120,000. I'm in the top half of my class at a top 30 ranked law school. I likely won't start at the median, but my chances of making $80,000+ my first year are solid. Plus, I live frugally and invest/save the vast majority of my income. With that, paying off my debt shouldn't be unattainable. This also isn't factoring any income I generate while in school and any potential future income from outside of a legal job.
This job thing may have held true in 90s. I would have back up plan if you can't find a legal job in two years. With how fast technology is moving, especially with ChatGPT, I could see the legal jobs shrink. ASU offers solid comp sci classes. Definitely take some. If you know how AI works and with your writing skills, you could be an AI whisperer. Those people are pulling in 300k year versus the dinosaur law school model where you compete with other law grads for 80k jobs.
@@amitabhstatton3236 Honestly some pretty good advice. All of my professors who touched on AI talked about how it's not going to take over the legal field, but there are already countless stories of it being used by lawyers. Currently, it gets people in trouble because they don't know the pitfalls, but soon it will be able to do the job of most associates. I have a few backup plans in place already. I'll definitely look into some comp sci stuff too though!
this is both hilarious and infuriating lol
I feel the same way 😂
