After Refusing To Wear 'Colonial Noose,' Māori Politician Is Kicked Out of Parliament

- A Māori politician in New Zealand was forced to leave Parliament’s chambers for not wearing a necktie. Rawiri Waititi, co-leader of the Māori Party, was wearing a traditional Māori pendant.
The day after Waititi’s removal, the House speaker held a debate about removing the tie rule, and it was dropped. Waititi has referenced to the Western necktie as a “colonial noose” on multiple occasions.

@@avataraang4603 Denial it is.
@@ticklingoscillators1852 ... So what's the reason? Also you can't tell me everyone dressing the same is actual culture. Culture goes way deeper than arbitrary dress codes.
@@NinjaThatLongboards Well, it is. Uniform promotes equality and equality is central to Western culture. When everyone is dressed the same, you don’t have visible class markers. You subconsciously don’t focus on a person’s attire, which leaves only their thoughts, depth of character, work and ethics. That’s pretty important for parliament, no? It also increases the sense of community. A more granular version of that is cohesion in military units- uniform dress is really critical for that to work. Putting on a suit and tie also gives an image of excellence and professionalism because there are a lot of elements that need to be tidied up and maintained. A tie needs to be neatly tied, a suit need to be carefully pressed, a shirt needs to be cleanly ironed, shoes need to be polished…. All of that demonstrates that an individual is professional and in a good state. Would it inspire confidence in a country’s electorate if everyone in parliament looked like a hobo? Appearances very much contribute to how civilised a nation is and how people behave. The NY subway was a criminal nightmare in the 80s. They fixed that by cleaning graffiti off trains and walls every night. I did an experiment in uni where we had one bus stop be perfectly clean and one be covered in posters, stickers and have a couple of pieces of rubbish on the floor. 86% more people didn’t use the bin at the dirty bus stop. Everyone used the bin at the clean bus stop. In just 2 hours, the slightly dirty bus stop became a filthy $hithole, littered with rubbish. The clean one remained clean because almost nobody wants to cast the first stone. It’s a very similar principle with dress. As soon as appearance standards drop, so will the standards for everything else. Like government. I know you don’t understand any of that but thankfully, there are people responsible for keeping up our civilisation and standards who do.
YES!!!✊🏽💘 That was incredible.

"Colonial noose" is a pretty absurd name for a tie, but not more absurd than kicking the man out for arbitrary clothing etiquette.
I think that is a silly name if used generally but given context and this specific situation i actually think is a clever use. His people pendant isn't allowed as a tie despite being formal for them while enforcing the regular tie culture calling it a colonial noose symbolizes the constricting of his own people cultures. I don't think its just a hate for ties but rather a metaphor to what is happening at that moment.
@@seishin2900 Good point. He probably wouldn't be calling it a symbol of oppression if he wasn't being forced to wear it. To his credit, it's ridiculous he can be covered head-to-toe in ethnic tattoos, but it's neckwear that gets the attention.

Funfact: the Tie (le cravate) was created in Croatia, a country that never had colonies.
Well no, it was creating in France inspired by a traditionnal croatian cloth which was quite different from the actual tie of today.

These people need to get some perspective. Even without this context ties are of a previous era. Anybody who believes a peace of cloth gives them some kind of status is delusional. Throw in the cultural issues and these men should be ashamed.

I'm Māori and if anything he makes me ashamed. I'm from his electorate too and I didn't vote for him, he just barely won the seat anyway. I love how epic the music is. You’d think a new continent had just been discovered. It’s about a man not wanting to wear a tie.
Well, the Maori DID discover a new continent on the edge of the earth, so far away from the rest of humanity that it's often not included on maps because it's so far away. The Maori had no compasses, no astrolabes or sextants, and no advanced maps. They found this hidden land, the land that time forgot, with their eyes, boats and bravery. They tracked the stars and the seas, and they found a new continent not found by anyone else previously.

@@lamontagne4697 The Maori were technologically advanced for their time, and especially for their development in history. The Maori needed advanced seafaring abilities to go anywhere off their ancestral islands, and the same goes for all thr other Polynesians. The fact that they used less is precisely why they're more impressive than European circumnavigators, because it was more difficult, and required more intrllectual accumen and physical hardiness than just sitting on a giant boat and using fancy tools.

Often times colonisation didn't try to destroy people, for example colonies would trade peacefully with indigenous peoples and peacefully coexist, or indigenous peoples would voluntarily assimilate with colonials, or indigenous peoples would adopt colonist, it is never so simple to say "colonist bad" "indigenous people good" in the case of the US, colonist would set up colonies in land not claimed or controlled by the native tribes, just to be raided, and burned down, with the woman raped and the men and children killed.
