  • A Māori politician in New Zealand was forced to leave Parliament’s chambers for not wearing a necktie. Rawiri Waititi, co-leader of the Māori Party, was wearing a traditional Māori pendant.
The day after Waititi’s removal, the House speaker held a debate about removing the tie rule, and it was dropped. Waititi has referenced to the Western necktie as a “colonial noose” on multiple occasions.

maybe if their forefathers didn't force everyone to adopt english culture, they would still have that culture for themselves today and the world today would have had more diversed "global culture".

You subconsciously don’t focus on a person’s attire, which leaves only their thoughts, depth of character, work and ethics. That’s pretty important for parliament, no? It also increases the sense of community. A more granular version of that is cohesion in military units- uniform dress is really critical for that to work. Putting on a suit and tie also gives an image of excellence and professionalism because there are a lot of elements that need to be tidied up and maintained. A tie needs to be neatly tied, a suit need to be carefully pressed, a shirt needs to be cleanly ironed, shoes need to be polished…. All of that demonstrates that an individual is professional and in a good state. Would it inspire confidence in a country’s electorate if everyone in parliament looked like a hobo? Appearances very much contribute to how civilised a nation is and how people behave. The NY subway was a criminal nightmare in the 80s. They fixed that by cleaning graffiti off trains and walls every night. I did an experiment in uni where we had one bus stop be perfectly clean and one be covered in posters, stickers and have a couple of pieces of rubbish on the floor. 86% more people didn’t use the bin at the dirty bus stop. Everyone used the bin at the clean bus stop. In just 2 hours, the slightly dirty bus stop became a filthy $hithole, littered with rubbish. The clean one remained clean because almost nobody wants to cast the first stone. It’s a very similar principle with dress. As soon as appearance standards drop, so will the standards for everything else. Like government. I know you don’t understand any of that but thankfully, there are people responsible for keeping up our civilisation and standards who do.

@@jordandthornburg what version of colonialism do you refer to?
Historically the indigenous people are NOT given equal rights and protections, forfeit huge amounts of natural resources under the “systems” and statistically live shorter lives than the colonisers.
The idea that living until you are 70 under a repressive ruling class eating low-nutrition food spending most of your life in low wage slavery or jobless in squalor ......
Or a forty year life surrounded by the lands your ancestors told stories about, the abundance of natural healthy food and being surrounded by a tight knit village of community-minded people with similar goals to you....
      Yeah right, colonialism is great.
In NZ the English had to sign a treaty to stop the never ending warfare with the Maori.
The Maori weren’t defeated, the English took heavy casualties and a peace treaty ( Te Tiriti o Waitangi) was seen as the more prudent solution.
You live in a colonialist mind state bubble, you haven’t tasted the full breadth of what life on earth can offer, you speak from a place of ignorance.

I dont think he was offended by the pendant. Just looked under dressed to someone who takes that seriously. Not everyone can slide buisness casual as well dressed. It's not oppressive to put on a tie and look professional. They just come from different cultures!

@Ptolemy 1 you could argue that. But I dont see them settling this that way. To satisfy the parliament youd have to get acceptance of it recognized. Which hasn't happened yet. All I noticed was it looks like he insists on disrespecting the chamber by strolling in Casually dressed, open collar. An I get that some people take decorum too serious. It just feels like hes picking the fight. An it's not a good fight. He didnt get to say his piece in sessio, so I hope it's more important than the issue up for debate on the floor!
