you should know where the name Pink Floyd Comes from. Band named after Pink Anderson & Floyd Council. two African American blues men from the 1920s.

I hope you see this. If you like this song by Pink Floyd, get the album "The Wall" and listen to all of it. That is the album Comfortably Numb is on. After you listen to the album, get the movie. The movie will put things more into perspective.

Did you know they recorded Dark Side of The Moon on 5.1 surround? If you have a surround sound system with 5 boxes and a subwoofer I really recommend you to listen to it. There’s probably a download and there’s a CD you can buy that has this 5.1 surround. You’ll hear things you have never heard before, I promise you that.

actually the original album was recorded in quadraphonic sound.
excerpt from wiki: "The recordings were initially created as a quadraphonic test by (Alan) Parsons, who recorded each timepiece at an antique clock shop."

You really need to listen with high quality headphones that cover both ears because many of the recordings of the 70's and 80's were recorded in a manner called "pan-pot" (pan potentiometer ), a technique in analog recording in which parts of the audio were directed specifically to the left or right speaker. Even if your single earbud has stereo sound, you are missing out on the effect, which can be stunning due to the layering used by so many recording artists. Treat yourself to some top-quality headphones and you won't be disappointed.

If you really want to get into Floyd vinyl is the best route.
Then to make it even better run it though a DBX to deprocess/decompress it to bring out all the tracks.
Of course with some high-end headphones or quality studio speakers.
Awesome choice Joey, you wont be disappointed.

seen123 to be pedantic it was actually originally mixed quadraphonic (a now defunct system with 4 speakers, 2 behind you), not stereo. I heard it like this on a vinal system that cost about £60,000... it was one of the most intense experiance of my life. I hadn't taken anything either! If im ever really rich I'm getting the original quad mix on vinal and setting up a similar system. I would say we are all missing out even when listening in stereo!

You picked one of the hardest Bands\Albums\Song to break down. To me, one of, if not the most complex bands of all time in any genre. The album has so many great songs but can easily lose meaning if you listen out of context. What I mean but that is the album is a story. Some songs on their own might not sound that good but when you know the story line you really see the significance to it. Love what you're doing with shedding light on the classics. They don't call them "Timeless Classics" for nothing.

I cut my teeth on Pink Floyd, my brother bought Dark Side of the Moon when it was released, I was 9 or 10 at the time and my parents were deep into Country music, so that was all I heard, until being exposed to Pink Floyd. At first I didn’t get it, until I listened to the whole album about three times. From that point on I was hooked. My brother barely had a chance to listen to the album. I played it so many times he gave up and gave me the album. I wore out two record needles and dang near wore the grooves outta the album. I’d been playing the guitar since I was a whipper, and could play almost everything Johnny Cash had out. When I heard David Gilmore’s guitar playing, I wanted to learn more and that turned into more and more experimenting with all types of music. I listened to your album, I liked it, did you produce it yourself? Dude You got it going on!

Pink Floyd are sound architects. They are not limited by "songs". They express music at the concept level. Comfortably Numb makes a lot more sense if you understand the whole album. Try the album, The Dark Side of the Moon or a track from it. Or Wish You Were Here, Animals, Meddle or of course, The Wall.

The movie of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” is really well done and is an artwork in its own right. The album can certainly stand on its own but it wouldn’t hurt adding the visuals to your understanding of the piece.

This song is off an album called "The Wall", which is a concept album. At this point in the album, the main character is very ill and in severe pain, but needs to pull himself together to do a major concert. So a physician has loaded him up with painkillers so he can make it through the concert. That's why this song has such a smooth, dreamy feel to it.

I can see from your reaction to Comfortably Numb (from The Wall) that you like prog music, and regardless of the age of that album, it is THE masterpiece. Dark Side Of The Moon changed music forever. These four are concept albums that tell a story that blends from one song to the next. They were all released in less than 7 years (March 1973 to November 1979), other bands just didn't stand a chance at the time. That said, there are other good Pink Floyd albums that are worth listening to many songs from - "Meddle", "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" and "The Division Bell". Get the 30th Anniversary Edition of Dark Side Of The Moon on SACD and get an SACD player... that album sounds insane in 5.1 surround sound!

Yeah Quadraphonic, I saw them on the Div.Bell tour (94), they were playing with the audio at the beginning making sounds turning around us (the crowd)... It was downtown Bordeaux - France, a few meters from the Garonne river... I was 18, one of the best days of my life... (And then an helicopter roars, children playing, and the Teacher screaming... "When we grow up and..." .. sorry I digress...).

Times when most bands played actual instruments, May I suggest Riders on the storm by the doors or some Stevie Ray Vaughn

Listen now....if you want to do "Dark Side Of The Moon" right, that is 70's style, you have to smoke some....set up two big feckin speakers.....sit between the two feckin speakers......now, close your eyes and crank it up!!!! All the way UP! That's how you do "Dark Side Of The Moon".

I love watching you react to songs of my childhood. Just imagining what it's like to hear this song for the first time. I can feel the solo in my soul. I'm losing my hearing, so if any of you out there have any recommendations on songs I should hear before it goes, let me know.

Jerklord maybe go see Australian Pink Floyd cover? They tour a lot and they sound pretty damn close to the old PF vibes :)

      Jerklord, some suggestions:
ZZ Top. I Need You Tonight; great guitar by Billy Gibbons!
Lonnie Liston Smith. Expansions, Fusion Jazz from about '74
Stanley Clarke. The Dancer. Fusion Jazz, kinda a Ravel repetition thing
Las Palmas Collective. Dreams of Eurydice, a latin fusion/carnival dance tune
BAH Samba feat. Alice Russell. Drifting, latin fusion; great vocals, vibes fills/solo!
Abraxas Pool. entire album. Orig. Santana members except Carlos.

I love this man's reactions, his sincerity comes over really well. It reminds me of when I first heard classic rock music.

You are discovering a whole new universe here. Take your time, enjoy it. Pink Floyd is a good starting point for entering the world of progressive rock in general. Bands like Genesis, King Crimson, Yes hold so much fantastic music. Their music may not be so instantly accessible as Pink Floyd, but ultimately very rewarding. You seem to have a natural sensitivity and open mindedness to music, you are on a good path.
