The 2021 Kia Stonic is a new offering in the super-small SUV class, competing alongside favourites like the Mazda CX-3, Toyota Yaris Cross and the Skoda Kamiq. The Stonic is available in a desirable turbo GT-Line spec that we’ve already reviewed, but what is life like at the very other end of the Stonic range? Today, Ponch finds out, with a detailed review of the 2021 Stonic S manual.
The Stonic uses a 1.4-litre petrol four-cylinder engine and, despite the SUV styling and plastic cladding, is heavily based on the Rio hatchback which is quite a lot cheaper.

Does it make sense to pay more for the Stonic than the Rio hatch?
In reality or in the mind of an SUV shopper?
Tough question. Good for those who like a Rio but have the 'bad back' thing going on.
I think that Hyundai’s versions of these cars (the i20 and Kona) are far more desirable.

and not just the (ATM) i20N.The new and fresh i20 is a lot more

Does it make sense to pay extra for different car colours? Stonic vs Rio, is similar to car colours, and is a matter of buying what you like.
People who dislike SUV styling can purchase the hatch however this wont stop a small minority of them (on car review sties) who will still carry on about how stupid people are to by SUVs vs hatch or pay the SUV tax. I say be aware of your actual needs and understand the market and what your options are, then make an informed decision and buy what you like, to do otherwise would be stupid.
I'll chip in. I spent weeks researching and inspecting cars and ended up buying a Stonic, and driving it for a year (European model). Easy pick over the Sierra, Kona, and even the T-Roc (on price and lead time). Took it all over Croatia, Slovenia, and Serbia with bikes in the back. Great city car, great tourer, and pleasant interior (miles ahead of the Sierra and Kona). And that warranty! Sold it for very close to what we paid, too. So if you're scrolling through comments looking for some assurance that the Stonic isn't troublesome or there's some horrible problem you only discover after you've bought it.... I'm your guy. Great car.

Great honest review. It looks to be a pretty good package, KIA should sell plenty at those prices ……. But ditch those hubcaps!!
Styled Steel Wheels are great because they don't have alloy curb scraping problems, and the fat tyres give a much softer ride. Thanks for your very unusual video in that you drove the base model, and that's what a lot of buyers want.
Re Wheels: Marketing dept knows that SUV buyers like things made of the same plastic as the TV newsreaders they watch 🤣

Good video review of this nice little but not to little car. I bought one, and if you dont care about horsepowers or that the engine do sound a little when accelerating (though i like that) its a good car that has a nice cool exterior.

Great value for money, and all that most singles, couples ( maybe with two kids ) need. Low on torque and that, combined with no auto might be a deterrent for certain demographics. I agree about the wheel covers; paint them black and be done with it. Maybe we're all better going back to basics. Great review Ponch.

Kia in the previous gen Rio had a option of a 1.6 eng that punched out about 100kw why the hell did they ditch that brilliant eng that gave a good balance of performance and economy

Love it base S manual essential things there plus 7 year warranty and looks better than the Venue 👍
But the venue has the better eng 1.6 90kw
If I was a car manufacturer!!! (lol), I'd bring out a model and establish ''hot small suv segment''.
1) (relative) practicality of a small suv
2) (sub7secs) performance of a hot hatch
Would be both a ''halo'' model for their small suv segment and a seller.
Good test Ponch, I ordered some last week for our rental fleet.Have had good experience with Kias for quite a while now. Dealer looked a bit hurt when I asked if Kia has a de-badge option. Stonic is hard to sell at the rental counter…………
I'd rather they got rid of idle stop, I dislike that tech, and use the money for adaptive cruise. I drive the company Outback, and love adaptive cruise, especially when coming up behind the inevitable older person doing 80 in a 100 or 110 zone, on a single lane highway.

I've driven this car and it's excellent, just a bit sluggish at times but once you learn how it drives that's no problem
We have one purchased 3 months ago it's great look at all the extras for the dollars our second kia

yaris cross. starting at LOL $31500 . up to , get ready for it $42537 , what the actual fuck over 40K for a light SUV with a yaris badge on it. you can almost get a i30 N for that money
I was almost about to buy one but the 1.4 is too underpowered. The small engine suits the Rio but not the Stonic.
Watching this video in 2024 and now the price for a manual has gone up and its not worth it...but im curious to know the fuel range in this thing with the manual transmission. 600! Im guessing?!

so agree why to spend more on things you don't need if you don't like the wheels you can buy new wheels and put that tyers on so not a problem as for the string whee;l again you can add leather on if you want 15 inch means you pay less for tyers still think they should not have got rid of the soul it selling well in US and EU I think this car is great for money don't need to pay more

Buyers be warned* I purchased a Stonic S in March and by May, I had a engine rattle. It's to do with RPM to throttle to engine which then makes car rattle.

They really need to put a better engine in the lower spec model that 1.4 l naturally aspirated engine is just to be honest it's really shit and relax so much power maybe they should put the engine in out of the Hyundai venue just to give it a little bit more. Pep even better put the 1.6 l out of the previous Rio SI
What exactly is a 'Crossover'?
Crosses between segments. Hatch-sized, but small lift and cladding. Crosses over into SUV. Or so they say.
